  1. Thanks guys. I'll be comparing the fuel economies in the small 8cyls over the 6s to see if it is really worth it. I like this Ford, but I wouldn't buy one. Again the power and economy are night and day poorer than the chevy was. I used to go a week and a half on one tank, now its virtually 1 week bang on. And we are comparing apples to apples here.

This truck has to be a combination of work and play so real operating costs need to be weighed out carefully. Does anyone other than Dodge offer variable valve timing?

  2. Thanks folks. The Tacoma is a sweet truck, but I'm worried the 5' box (No long box available) will be too short to be effective.

I hadn't considered full sized trucks that had the variable valves (like the Hemi Dodge)...I'll look into that one. I'm driving a newer F-150 work truck now and just got out of a full sized Silverado. The fuel consumption in the ford is 30% worse...its terrible!! Both base model trucks but the power and economy with the chevy was night and day. Makes me wonder if these fuel ratings are nonsense to begin with...

  3. Hey everyone, I'm looking for advice from experienced 4x4 owners here. I'm looking at a mid sized truck with the capacity to haul/tow on occasion. 8 cylinders are out of the question as this truck will be seeing a ton of highway miles.

    so far the only definates I'm looking to meet are;

    -crew cab,

    -towing capacity - 4000-5000lbs

    -true 4x4 with hi-low range

-6' box (Hauling a sled, ATV, Building supplies etc...5' box is too short(?)

-Fuel effieciency during normal everyday driving

So far the only thing that looks close is the Nissan Frontier. I know there is the GMC /Chev Canyon/Colorado but the Nissan is sitting better with me with the 1' longer box and higher quality rating. I haven't looked at Toyota yet and I'm not sure I want to get into a Durango.

    Is there anything I'm missing?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

  4. I've ben to Guelph a few times to stay at the University and attend seminars by ORFA- always thought there was a lot of good looking water in Guelph and maybe the best tackle store I've ever been in- Hook. Line & Sinker- check it out.

Welcome to Guelph, Ray at H.L & S is a great guy with a really nice shop.

  5. Update:

Opp & MNR tried unsuccessfully to trap it and ended up making the decision to destroy it. It was reportedly sighted very close to Salem Public school so I'm guessing this was the reason they made the call. Funny how everyone around hear just bugs out when there's a sighting. I do agree with the schools keeping the kids indoors during the investigation though. This was once Black bear territory as well as the Eastern Mountain Lion or Puma, which I understand is on a bit of a comeback.

  6. Hey folks. I'm hoping to break away for a day or two later this month to try my luck on the Grand in Fergus/Elora or Saugeen near Hanover using Fly gear.

Can anyone offer some tips on techniques at this time of year? I'm still pretty green (especially with fly gear) and would like to increase my odds on catching a larger fish this time around as I don't get the chance often. So far I've only managed smaller fish in the 6" range.

The Saugeen doesn't have the strict regs, so I wouldn't be opposed to casting/drifting tips if I get up that way...

    Thanks in advance

I don't know if Eastern Cougars can have the odd black offspring or not...wolves do, so why not.

Is it me or is there a lot of people who refuse to believe that Cougars could be on the comeback? Everytime I google the subject, it seems the MNR say they believe they are extinct or have inconclusive evidence...

Escaped pet? Yeah, like every city or town near a reported sighting could have that many escaped (and illegal) pets...

  8. Wow...thats a tough one, sorry for your loss.

Perhaps he was trying ease your anguish for doing what you had to do as I'm sure he could feel your emotions. I've been told that a dog will bear enormous amounts of suffering to keep living for his "people". You did the right thing by being humane and being there for him in the last moments. I wouldn't do it any other way myself.

  9. Sorry British officionado passing through :thumbsup_anim: STELLA is the beer of choice here :clapping:

I love that stuff! Too bad I have to drink that cheap light beer though. (If I have to drink water instead of real beer, I opt for cheap)

  10. Hey folks...thinking about taking the family camping for a weekend in the next couple of weeks.

I have never taken them camping before, so I am looking for suggestions on good quiet "family" oriented places that would have some good fishing yet some amenities close by. Canoe rentals and dog friendly places would be a plus too. I tried surfing around on the Algonquin site, but got a little overwhelmed...so many lakes and choices.

also, is there campfire bans in effect up that way?

    Thanks in advance.

  11. Canoe2fish,Go with the metal valleys, and ice@water under it,and on your eaves to.With the weave in the valley the leaves will stay in the valley, and thats what you do not want, with the metal valley the leaves will have a better chance of flowing off than the shingle weaves...and like MTP said DON,T forget the Drip edge. Are you doing the job yourself,or contracting it out.All you need to make your valleys look good is make sure you chalk line the valleys, and that will give you a nice finnish. What is the pitch of your roof.

    Steve

    Thanks Steve.

Some things are left to the pro's. Besides, then I have a warranty if I go with a reputable contractor.

As my neighbor said; "If you have 5 friends help you replace your roof, you will end up doing 6 roofs in the end"

Pitch is 7-12, should look nice with the shake style.

  12. Thanks for the input guys.

I have a product called "stone coated steel". We have a very large roof and this product was comparable to midlevel 35 year shingles. Where are you located? Maybe I could put the guy in touch with you for a quotation.

    Stone Coated Steel

We liked the look of it as the stones removes that glare that can be associated with steel roofs. The stone also takes out the element of fading.

I do like the look of these though my budget will surely prohibit them. I still have a lot of other reno items on the list, so I have to keep it tight.

I avoided roofing for 30 years with a few lapses in judgment.

I would think closing a valley without metal would be a recipe for disaster if you have any ice damming.

If your looking for the look of shakes, I'm pretty sure I've never seen shakes weaved into a valley.

They do it frequently in my area and I do think it looks the best...but think the tree debris will hang up in the corners. (No?)

  13. Hey guys...I know this doesn't even come close to fishing question, but I would like to know your opinions.

I'm looking into replacing my roof this year. I'm going with the fancy looking shingles (texture that more resembles cedar shakes) and was thinking of going with metal valleys because I get alot of leaves and seeds falling on the roof from the large surrounding trees.

I had one estimator tell me that they splice or overlap shingles in the valleys instead of using metal flashing. To me I can't see how the junk would wash down to the gutters as easily this way. (I get so much crap up there, I have to walk the roof three times a year with the leaf blower and clean out the gutters...yes I plan to add gutter screens in the near future!)

What do you folks think...Should I opt for metal valley flashings only?

    Thanks in advance.

  14. I read an article where there was only one instance where a waterway (creek/river) was privately owned in Ontario. If the water was navigable by any watercraft, then it was deemed a public passage. (by water only) If this is a pond or small lake completely surrounded by land (more than road allowance distances) then it would indeed be trespassing.

If it (lake or pond with no flowing water) is within road access it could fall into grey area. (Maybe you can only legally have access to that specific spot of the shore only??? I would think a body of water in that instance could be privately owned.

I'll try to find it when I get a minute.
