  1. I had one of my best musky fishing days on Sturgeon lake on a rainy day. Went 6/9 on a chartruese/red bucktail. We had fronts moving through all day with on and off rain. Some of the fish were caught casting close to the banks and shoreline structure.

I will be out trolling Buffalo Harbor tomorrow morning for the NY state muskie opener. Hope to hook in to a nice trophy size Lake Erie lunge.

    Good Luck,

    Tom

  2. Cliff will set you in the right direction, he has been a valuable resource over the years. I live outside of Buffalo, NY and our fishing group has been very fortunate to enjoy the fishing on Sturgeon Lake. Cliff has been very gracious on keeping me informed on water conditions and possible hot spots and I think I may have thrown a spot or two his way. Unfortunately our run on Sturgeon came to an end last year as the Lodge we stayed at went out business. Does anyone know what ever to the property at Gil Mar Resort?

You have some great fishing right outside your door. We have done well trolling and casting for muskies along the Long beach area right in to Goose Bay. Caught a few eyes as well. Get a good topo map of the lake and look for structure, you will find fish ........

  3. With the warm weather forecasted for the next few days, I figured yesterday might of been the best chance at catching some late season steelhead. I picked up my friend Joe who lives in the Southern Tier, he fished the Catt earlier in the day and had a few spots that produced fish earlier. Are first stop was on the reservation. We both landed one silver fish. The fish below came on a chartruese egg sack.

At around 6 PM, we made a game time decision to hit the lower section. Our bait of choice was an olive jig fly tipped with a wax worm. Joe struck first with a nice jack. Than we had a double header with me landing the fish below:

As the winds began to calm down, I was able to be more precise with my drifts. In the last hour of daylight we were able to get a steady pick of steelhead and bass:

My final tally for the night was 5 steelhead and 5 bass. Joe landed 6 steelhead and 1 bass. It was tough to leave since this may be my last outing of the Spring season. Maybe if weather conditions permit, we can sneak out one more time.

  4. I agree with the above statements, you can't beat the customer and warranty service that Cabela's provides. I purchased a pair of Hodgman breathable waders from Cabelas last October. Since that time, the waders have developed a leak. I contacted customer service. Cabelas warranty's any manufacturers product for one year. All I need to do is ship them back. They are going to reimburse me for any shipping costs and replace my waders.

I do agree with Tony on the felted bottom boots, they do make you feel like you walking on snowballs but studs are a must. I purchased the ultralight wading boots and have not seen any wear and tear as of yet.

  5. Bill M,

I do agree, thank you for your explanation. Looks like my steelhead season will be winding down this week as well. Might make one more trip down to the crown jewel of WNY and see if she will give up any of her bounty.

    Good fishing,

    Tom

  6. I'd like to add that ALL my roe has been taken from stateside fish. Nothing from any Ontario tribs.

Being from Western New York, do you feel the comment above is appropriate? Are the state side fish less superior than the trout that swim in Ontario waters? Do the NYS waters not deserve the same coutesy and release practices that you adhere to on your home waters? It is statements like this that cause resentment between the steelhead anglers of NY and Ontario.

From reading your posts, you seem like a very ethical fisherman but your comment just rubbed me the wrong way.

  7. I picked up a Vermont Castings 5 years ago at our local Home Depot. Thing cooks like a dream and is used throughout all four seasons. During the summer months it is covered on our patio, in the winter it is stored in our garage until I wish to use it.

  8. Blaque,

The pink worm has been getting a workout for me on the WNY Erie Tribs as well as white and pink and white jigs. In off color conditions I will tip a jig with a berkley power grub in pink for extra smell and color. Hope this helps.

    Good Fishing,

    Tom

  9. My friends talked to this outfitter at our local Outdoor's Show over the weekend and they are looking at possibly booking a trip. Has anyone on this board heard of Air Ivanhoe out of Foleyet, ON? Anything good or bad to report on there Outpost camps or services in general? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Tom

  10. Thanks everyone for the information. We are just in the planning process so it is time to do some research. I think I am still edging towards a fly-in on the Gouin but just hate the drive in on the logging road.

    Thanks again,

    Tom

  11. Has anyone ever had the pleasure of fishing this body of water? We are looking at booking a trip for late Spring/early Summer and wondering if this lake has decent fishing. Looking at targeting pike and walleyes. Any lodging recommendations?

    Thank you,

    Tom

  12. Have to agree with you Blaque, it is a very humbling experience when a tragedy like this happens in your community. I had a friend that was scheduled to be on that flight but due to delays he decieded to spend the night in NYC. I guess it was his lucky day. Thoughts and prayers to the families invovled.

  13. I was fortunate to do some Tarpon fishing when I visited Puerto Rico two years ago. The tackle the Charter Captain used was Medium heavy and Heavy action Spinning gear, 7 foot rods with a reel that had enough line capacity if you hooked up with a large fish. We drifted the lagoons and mangro trees with live anchovies. I hooked up with 5 fish and only landed 3. The biggest fish I landed was around 25 lbs. I did have one very large fish on, guide estimated it around 100 lbs. but I was spooled by the time the guide was able to get the boat started to retrieve some line. Amazing how fast they can strip line. The second fish lost was in the 50 lbs. class but was lost after an amazing jump. I was in awe of seeing this fish clear the water that I forget the cardinal rule, bow to the king. I would definetly target them again if ever given the opportunity. They fight like a smallmouth on steroids. Best of luck if you get out.

  14. What a gorgeous morning to be out on the streams in Western New York this past Sunday. Fished a well known Southern Tier stream from 8:30 AM until around 2 PM with my friend Joe. The water was in perfect condition, clear enough to see in the riffle areas but the runs were a beautiful green color. A considerable difference from what the stream looked like earlier in the week due to all the rain and snow melt. We worked our way downstream from our entrance point and the first fish of the day came on a white mini jig tipped with a pink Berkley power grub. Unfortunately the fish got off, pulled the jig out after the fish made a run towards a boulder. Worked our way downstream and came to another run, first fish came at the tailout of the run as the float started to swing. Fish was on momentarly but the hook pulled out again. Fished the area for a while longer and was able to successfulyl land this beauty.

Joe and I worked our way farther downstream to a run with a nice undercut that always holds fish. Unfortunately there were two guys already fishing the area. So we deceided to fish a deeper riffle area below. My friend Joe finally was able to hook into a decent fish on an egg fly pattern but lost it after a short battle. The two gentlemen left the run above so we moved up and give it a shot. Joe was able to go 2 for 3 on a pink Berkley trout worm.

We moved farther downstream to an area close to our exit point. After being sutdown for a while I was able to get a fish to hit on a pink work but got a poor hook set, fish off. Was persistent and hooked up with another fish on the pink worm. The fish was able able to run the line on a cut in the shale and my line broke. Joe was able to successfully land two more fish. Overall he went 4 for 6 and I 1 for 5.

Here are a few pictures that I downloaded from the end of November. Fish were caught in an urban stream 10 minutes from my house.

  15. I second the 3" berkley trout worm. My friend has been slaying this Fall on pink. I myself have no confidence in the lure, have tried pink, white and cheese color, no luck ...............

have had luck on the 2.5" gulp split tail minnow in shad color.

  16. Nice looking jigs Blaque .......... The picture of your nephew is priceless, you have to love the ambition ........

Hit the upper stretch of Cayuga for a few hours Saturday morning, went 3 for 4 on a white jig tipped with a pink Berkley power wiggler (grub).
