  1. Hey Viper, if you can not get the boat in the water, and have some time to spare, tell the seller you want to fill the bottom of the boat up with a garden hose, then crank the front end as high as you can so the water goes to the back, let it sit for 30 minutes, and inspect for leaks underneath, then lower it all the way down so the water goes to the front, then let it sit and inspect under. I know this will not show small leaks, but anything you shoudl be worried about should come through.

This worked for me in the past, and most of the time the sellers reaction to this request tells it all

PS - what money are you looking to spend??

  2. Well ive narrowed it down.... looks like im goin with a 16'basic set up and ill just out fit it with the stuff i need... its the cheapest way to be safe i would say. enough boat to handle the water and im goin with a 25 HP 2 stroke.... so i think itll have enough power !

thanks for all the help.... one more question..... does $7800 sound about right for a 16' aluminum, 25 yamaha 2 str, and a wide stance "V1600" trailer ?

Sounds close, depend on the make of the boat, what particulars can you give on his 16ft boat?

    Make of boat

    Model

    Deep or not

    Floor or casting deck ?

    Livewell?

    Nav lights etc

    Thanks

  3. I have used paypal through ebay for a couple years and I am pleased with them. They guarantee purchases and if for some reason the seller reneges or does not deliver the goods, paypal will re-imbourse the full amount to your account. Note that I haven't used paypal for about 18 months therefore read the fine print anyway in case policy changes have been enacted.

What guppy says is very true, however, be very careful if you ever plan on selling on ebay because as guppy clearly stated, ebay(paypal) is very quick to put money back in your account, however, as a seller, DO NOT sell on ebay to people with no or low feedback, because reality is, there are crooks in this world, and all it takes is one dishonest person to ruin it(trust me I learnt this the hard way based on a sale gone bad).

I sold a hockey card ($200) on ebay, I received payment very very quickly, so I shipped promptly, here is where it gets dicey. In my add, I was very very clear that the buyer had two options for shipping. A) 3.00 regular shipping and I would not guarantee arrival. or B) 15.00 for priority shipping and insurance, which at the time in BOLD I recommended it for any cards over 100.00, (Now I wont even ship unless they pay insurance and priority shipping)

Anyhow, apparently he did not get the card, but did opt for the 3.00 not guaranteed shipping. Well, he complained, and paypal immediately took the money out of my account. I am still tryign to get it back, I know I will, but it is a lengthy process. I have all the proof.

Did he get the card??????????????? Only he knows

    Lesson learned

    1) only sell to people with good feedback

    2) take the time to email a few references if need be before completeing the transaction

    3) for anythign valuable, do not settle for reg shipping only

  4. no need to worry at all, I have completed over 160 transactions using ebay, both as a seller and buyer with hockey cards. If u desperately need peace of mind, get a credit card with a low limit (200-500 bucks) and attach that to your paypal account. That way if something happened, its only a few buck.

However, I think that is over kill, I never worry about it as it is very secure.

  5. One of the reasons your friend got such a good price on the boat is because it didn't come with seats, but that's ok! Y'all can install the ones you really like the best.

I wouldn't settle for the ones that look easiest to install if you like others better, none of them are that hard to install if you're handy with tools.

The biggest concern for me would be the seat placement in the boat over ease of installation, where they work and look the best. You'll want to position the tiller seat so the motor can be easily operated without having to stretch or lean to far one way or the other. The seat on the front casting deck should be centered in the middle of the deck for leg room all the way around it, also to help "balance the boat with weight distribution when someone is sitting in it. The seat forward of the tiller should be placed off center of the boat about the same distance as the tiller seat on the opposite side for weight distribution when a passenger is onboard. You may want to go to a marine dealer and look at some boats that are similar with seats installed and take some measurements.

As far as installation goes, like I said... it's not that hard, but will be time consuming. Your best bet will be (and I know you probably don't want to hear this) to mark where you want the seats on the decks and then remove them from the boat to install the pedestal bases (this should be pretty easy since you don't have a console to contend with). This way you can easily install your fasteners on the underside of your decking for the bases and it solves the problem of how to get to the center seat installation. I highly recommend using stainless steel Tee Nuts on the underside of your decking to hold the oval head machine screws (1/4-20)

    teeNutF.jpg

The same thing boat manufacturers use for pedestal seat installation. They use these for a flush mount application because seat placement rarely coincides with the deck joist/framing and you don't have to worry about "missing" a joist with a nut and washer. If your screw is a little long and sticks past the Tee nut after installation, cut it off flush with a small grinder or Dremel.

A lot of people don't understand the stresses (acceleration, deceleration, choppy/rough water, and the weight of a 200+ lb. person) put on a pedestal seat base in a boat and think you can simply screw the seat down to the decking with wood screws. Big mistake! This will only hold temporarily, and sooner or later (sometimes sooner) you'll end up on your :asshat: or in the drink!

As far as pedestal seat selection, I would choose a quality one with more than 4 fasteners holding the base to the decking. The better quality will add value to the boat for resale.

Remember, weight distribution is a key factor in safe boating!

    I hope this helps.

WOW, I appreciate all the time you took putting into this post, unfortunately rather than being in here reading this great and informative post, I was outside installing the new seats i picked up today. My buddy loves it, he is also my roomate. I did matk the spots and then take the seat out to install. Took me about 4 hours to install

I will get some pics soon

  6. That looks like a 16' prosport, same as mine. I am also looking at getting some seats. I will check your thread again. Is that a 25 or 30 hp two stroke on it?

Hey man, show me a pic of your boat. How do you like it?

I picked up some sweet seats today, installed them tonight. I will get some new pics tomorrow and post them for you.

What size engine do you have on yours?

  7. tn_gallery_454_122_20911.jpg

I used the swivel ease, 3/4" pin mounts from crappy tire. I like them. You can sit high or low by pulling out the 13" long pin.

Thanks for the reply and pic. Were they easy to install? Did they come with mounting screws/bolts/etc, or did you have to purchase seperate??

Kinda hard to tell from the pic as it is a bit small, but did you have to drill any big holes to install??

  8. Hey all, my budy recently picked up a 09 LEGEND Pro Sport Tiller, Talk about floor space in this thing. Anyway it is very plain inside, sweet layout, but in dire need of some seats. We have been looking around at the local marinas, crappy tire, walmart, etc. Our first hurdle will be to find some in the colours that path the LEGEND Black /white/tan colours now. Anyway, in researching and lookin at what to get for him , neither of us realised there were as many different style seat swivels, posts, and floor mounts. Some you just screw the mount with four bolts/nuts with a square deasign, and as some of you know some are inset into the floor by way of drilling a bigger hole.

The square base design that bolts directly to the floor and seat with four buts/bolts look like the easiest to install, but probably not a favorite for many due to the big diameter of the post section.

Please share you opinions and experiences during install, which do you prefer and why ?

We will be def installing a seat onto the casting deck which is easy to access the underside, also one at the back on the half seat where you drive the tiller, again easy to access underside by removing seat top.

Due to the huge floor space he would like to install another onto the floor about half way up, this is where I am not sure, as there is not way to access the underside of the floor to bolt the base in, or is this necessary.

Here is a pic of his boat ( these colours in my opinion are nicer than the old green. For what he paid I think he made out well

    IMG_0188.jpg

  9. I do not have an opinion or Legend other than they look nice.

I do haev an opinion on the motor....how much more is a 4 stroke?

Not exactly sure Forrest, it is my budy that has been in contact with the salesman as it is for him, however according to their website it looks like the difference to goto a 25hp 4 stroker is:

    $1400 manual start

    $1700 electric

  10. just 9 pages on this board alone with the word Legend... ;):D

I look forward to others posts as I am now starting my search for a new toy...

I agree, i did the search, read through 9 pages, LOL. I guess I knew before I posted that it would be mixed opinions, it is almost like starting a convo regarding religion, or auto manufactureers. LOL

Either way, I have read a ton, and have printed some posts for my buddy to read.

  11. Posting this for a buddy, he is looking at getting the following:

2009 LEGEND 16ft pro sport (tiller)

    Live well, floor, deck, storage

    25hp 2 stroke MERC (NEW)

    Trailer

    $7600 out the door

I think this seems reasonable , but I am not familiar with LEGEND at all.

Anyone have any experience goo/bad with them?

  12. SO sorry to hear about your day Rizzo, very happy that your young lad is ok though, that is the most important thing. As for your motor, hopefully it is minor, I know how discouraged you must have been, even if that was the only thing that went wrong for you today.

On a different note, you know what is ironic, I think you recently sold a 14ft 10in LOWE, as I believe I saw pics of it on here, I just bought the exact new (used) boat you got rid of.

Although my maden voyage was much better than you, I have since noticed a leak at one of the rivets, kinda breaks my heart, so I feel for you, getting a new or used boat is very exciting.

My LOWE is a 99, what year was yours? Did you have any rivet problems??

Gain I am so glad your boy is ok.

    heres my boat

    IMG_0107.jpg

  13. Thanks guys, I went to the place I bought the boat. Here was the offer, they would fix it properly for me by replacing the rivets, however it means removing the deck, floor and console, which scares me a bit, because it may not be the same once everything is placed back in. They offered to so this for me with me picking up %25 of the cost. However, they were very very confident that if I used the proper liquid aluminum weld apoxy, that it would never leak again.

So what was decided was that I would try the epoxy (which they gave me for free) until the end of the season, this way my boat was not tied up in the shop as they are very very busy. At the end of the season if the epoxy does not leak, I can drop the boat off

    WOOT

Everyone I talk to locally has told me just to use the epoxy and leave it, not a biggy, they do not recommend removing decks, floors, and consoles.

  14. If you have the clearance it is better to tow with the motor all the way down.

If you dont have the clearance and you have to tilt the motor then you need the transom saver.

Curious I am, is there a general rule of thumb regarding how much clearance you should have between the road and the bottom of the lower unit that will help you determine if you can travel with the motor fully down????

  15. Hey all, as some of you already know I recently purchased a new (USED) LOWE fishing boat, I have now had it in the water 4 times, just tonight after work I noticed water dripping from the front of the boat underneath. When I got under to look it appeared to be coming from a rivet right by the front seam. I have included pics to show you the location, it was very hard to tell exactly which of the 3 rivets it was coming from or the seam. It was a small drip, but a drip none the less.

My heart pretty much sank, I feel devistated, but I want your opinion on this, hopefully I am just paranoid and this is a minor issue. The boat itself has had a bit of water in it since i brought it home, but it has rained 8 out of 14 days and the cover that came with it may as well be screen, so I hope the majority of water I have noticed in the back when I pull the plug was coming from the rain we have been getting. It is a small slow drip but it leaves me with a few questions:

    1) A small drip it is, but I wonder how much water is entering the boat from this

    2) Is this easily repairable?

    3) Should I right the boat of and go back on the place where I bought it, at least to repair and or ask for money back (bought from a marina)

    4) Am I making a huge deal out of somethign very small?

    5) Will it continue to get worse ?

Please give me your thoughts and opinions, I apologise if I am being needy and paranoid, but this is my first (nice) boat I have owned, and only my second ever. Up until this year I have never owned one, just enjoyed others.

This pic gives you a good idea on loacation

This pic although a lil dark, is just as a drip is forming:

  16. I have a much larger chunk out of my skeg... picture the curvature of a tennis ball extending into the skeg about 7/8". No perceivable issues. I inquired about repair and the over-the-phone estimate was $85 and they said they could likely fix it without removing the lower unit. If the skeg is bent, it's possible that it may cause the boat to lean or turn but it doesn't look that significant in the picture.

I would take it back to the dealer, swallow your pride and ask if they are prepared to do anything about it. They might have a guy in the shop that can weld it up and not cost the dealer anything to fix. I think it's worth asking. They should be able to tune the steering for as well by adjusting the trim tab anode, or at least walk you through the process. It's not difficult but could be time consumming if you want it perfect. Trial and error. It might also be a weight balance issue or perhaps a wind issue.

Be sure that it isn't a tilt/trim issue. My boat for example will exhibit heavy steering effort in one direction until its planed out and trimmed correctly. At that point the steering is as light as if you were sitting still.

Congrats on the new boat and lets see some more pictures of it. It sounds like a nice ride.

Thanks a ton, I sure like the new (used) boat. A huge upgrade from my 14fy misty river tiller with a 9.9hp.

  17. Hey all, I recentley bought a new (Used) boat from a reputable marina locally. The boat has a 1999 Johnson 35hp 2stroke, electric tilt / trim. Very very nice package at what I felt was a reasonable price. Here is where I need your advice, I walked into the marina on a Thurs aft trying to find a decent used package in my price range, just happens I dealt with the sales manager, and he pointed me in the direction of the boat i picked up, it had just been traded in that morning. A 1999 Lowe Deep V sea nypmh side console. He noted that the only thing wrong with it was that the tach needed to be replaced. Anyway, I handed him 2000 cash and told him I would settle up when it was ready for pickup. He told the mechanics to fix EVERYTHING that needed to be fixed, ASAP. I then left the marina and he said he would call me when they were done with it. The next nit (Fri) after work I call the marina hoping to get it for the weekend, the sales manager was gone for the day, but the mechanics and service manager said they were done with it, they replaced a tach and a few mnor electrical things. They said from there end it was ready for pickup providing I did not want them to wash, wax and clean it first, of course this would mean I could not pick it up until Monday, so I said I would come get it, and clean it myself, LOL,

Anyway I took the boat out the next day (Sat) and Sunday as well. On Sunday I noticed at top speed it pulled to the right, so when I took it out of the water, I got to inspecting the motor closer ( I am very embarrassed for not noticing this before picking it up) but I was so excited to pick it up, plus I showed up at the marina to pick it up like 30 minutes before they closed on a Fri night. I noticed that the lower unit fin had some significant damage, no leaks thankfully but some damage, not just a scuff, but rather a wrip in the bottom area of the fin, literally a chunk missing about the size of 1/2 a quarter. The prop looks fine, just the fin has a small chunk out of it and it is bent a bit at the very end.

Some buddies say not to worry about it so long as nothing is leaking, I ama bit embarrased for not noticing it, therfor I am reluctant to call the marina and ask them about it, or about fixing it, considering I have no way to prove that I did not hit anything on my own, which I def did not, but I wish so much that I had noticed it at the marina before taking it home.

Am I being to anal and picky, considering it is a used boat, should I be concerned, keep in mind that it is not leaking any oil at all, just a pull to the right at 50% to full throttle.

    Your thoughts are greatly appreciated

    Shane
