  1. Try Fishing World in Hamilton. They had the big OWNER jig heads available. They'd be able to order some for you if they're out of stock.

    OWNER's website 1 oz. jig = 5/0 hook and 1 1/2 oz. jig = 7/0 hook. Ain't cheap at $13 for 3 jigs.

  2. "Why would you think you've got any idea what the OFAH/OOD position is on this"

    BillM

    From the OFAH's official website:

At all levels of government, the OFAH is recognized as a highly professional and "devastatingly effective" advocate for Ontario's natural resources and the rights and traditions of anglers and hunters. OFAH leadership on issues such as invasive species, anti poaching, fisheries restoration, firearms issues and hunter education, are admired and often sought-after internationally by other organizations.

"if you think he was out there 'poaching' on purpose, you've obviously never caught anything to get excited about ..."

Your views on intentional and unintentional poaching make no sense.

Did he intend or expect to catch a world record laketrout? No. Was he justified in breaking the law? No. He rationalized it was OK and figured he wouldn't get caught.

Defending your friend is admirable. Excusing or justifying poaching is not.

  3. "I'd cut the old guy some slack. I would hope the MNR would have better things to do." Mike Borger

Somehow I don't believe the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters / Ontario Out of Doors share this view. As a contributor to OOD magazine, I expect better from you. Why bother having MNR regulations if they're going to be ignored?

  4. If anyone is interested, these rods are also available at Bass Pro Shops in Vaughn. The rod looks great but it felt a bit tip heavy; you may feel differently. Solo is right about the price of the guides; a Fuji Titanium #30 stripper guide is approximately $30. If you were to buy a set of six guides and tip top, you'd be close to a $100.

  5. Fish can swim up 16 Mile Creek all the way up to Kelso Conservation Area (Hwy. 401). The Creek runs through Glenn Abbey Golf Course. Spring = steelhead, summer = bass, fall = salmon. There's access at Trafalgar and Dundas, if you want to walk the creek.

  6. THE spots in the GTA used to be the Lakeview and Hearn Generating Stations. Unfortunately, they're both out of commission. Spinners, worms, and white jigs (esp. white Beetle spins) used to work really well.

It's not the GTA but I the Niagara River gets a huge run. Don't know much about the Niagara run but I'd guess late May early June.

  7. The UC stakeholders have definitely gone overboard with their tactics however they they are attempting to protect a fishery that is unique to Southern Ontario. Protecting this interest is no different or "narrow minded" than the unlimited access Credit Steelhead lobby. There are far more healthy and accessible Steelhead rivers in Ontario than there are good resident Brown fisheries...why POTENTIALLY lower the fishing quality on the UC by allowing migratories up that far? As I've stated previously an electrobarrier well above Norval but below the UC would benefit both groups.

It's no surprise that those who support unlimited steelhead access are ones who do not fish the UC on a regular basis...it's easy to brush-off the fishery as trival when one does not utilize it. I can assure you that these feelings are not shared on message boards that actually represent the stakeholders that do use it.

  8. What's your experience with Live Target lures? Some of the finishes look great. I noticed that Dave Mercer was throwing a Live Target frog on his show. I'm hoping he didn't leave Rapala. Just last year they came up with a Dave Mercer sexy-shad colour.

  9. Take a look at the number of fishing shows based in Southern Ontario:

    1. Real Fishing w Bob Izumi

    2. Canadian Sportfishing w Italo Labignan

    3. Fishing Canada w Viola, Miller and Bowman

    4. Fishful Thinking w Charlie Wray

    5. Going Fishing w Darryl Choronzey

    6. Fish TV w Leo Stakos and Ron James

    7. Urban Fisherman w Shaun Ricard

    8. Getting Hooked w Aaron Shirley and Barry Pringle

    9. Mariko Izumi

    10. Extreme Angler w Karl Kalonka

    11. Getting School'd w JP DeRose

    12. Fly Max

    13. The New Flyfisher

    14. Facts of Fishing w Dave Mercer

    Wow!

  10. How much would you pay for a discontinued spoon? Somebody just dropped $44.17 + $10 shipping on EBAY for a Delfin Aligator(new in package). Wow. It's a great spoon and it does have a cult following with brookie fishermen, but who would've expected that type of money?!? Check your spoon/pier-chucking boxes for buried treasure!

  11. Sad article in this week's NOW Magazine entitled "Mercury Mystery":

    ...

On the James Bay coast, another First Nations agency, the Mushkegowuk Environmental Research Centre, is issuing its own red alert. The agency has been sampling fish in the Albany and Attawapiskat Rivers and finding high levels of methyl mercury.

De Beer's Victor diamond mine on the Attiwapiskat, which started production in July 2008, has been a cause for concern, says Grand Chief Stan Louttit of the Mushkegowuk Council, which represents eight First Nations.

Ontario's Ministry of the Environment changed its fish consumption advisory for a stretch of the river near the mine - an important First Nations fishery - to four meals a month, from the previous eight.

In a 2007 submission to the MOE, Lean (professor of ecotoxicology at the University of Ottawa) warned that changes to proposed limits from the De Beers mine would bring mercury in the Attawapiskat River to unacceptable levels.

"A little mercury can go a long way," Lean says.

  12. The regular Krocodile is OK but I prefer the Krocodile Stubby. At one time, Luhr Jensen called the Stubby the Little Jewel. It's imilar to the Little Cleo but deeper cupped like the Delfin Aligator. 2/5 oz. is a good all around size; 3/4 for salmon. The 1/3 oz. chartreuse/orange-fire-dot Little Jewel was magic for Lake Ontario browns in the days before zebra mussels.

PS Call ACME and request the return of topless Cleo on the back of the lure. The engraved headlights were like a beacon calling out to fish.

  13. Try www.boats.com

Three years ago I picked up a 2001 Lund Mr. Pike, 115 Yamaha 4 stroke, Eagle Trailer, Minnkota, sonar, etc. for $11 000 (that's with exchange). Taxes were extra at the border; paid by VISA. No problems coming back. The customs guy at Niagara Falls looked jealous but congratulated me anyway. Canadian Tire did a free trailer inspection (required by Ministry of Transportation). I saw similar used rigs in Canada asking $25 000. I bought it through a Maryland marina so I had all the proper paperwork. Round trip from Toronto to Baltimore was 18 hours. Add $70 for an overnight stay in a motel.

A year later I picked up a brand new 9.9 Yamaha kicker in Kalamazoo, Michingan for $1450 off Ebay.

Ask me if I like shopping in the States.

  14. Try this and it'll save you money and save your health. Go to the grocery store and pick up the following:

    - White corn flour

    - Yellow corn flour

    - White cornmeal

    - Yellow cornmeal

Each bag contains 750 grams. This will cost you about $8. Mix equal parts of each. That's 3000 grams of home made fish coating vs $4 for 350 grams of Fish Crisp.

Add your favourite spice eg. salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, etc.

    Dust fish and fry away.

FishCrisp and Daryl's fish coating both contain hydrogenated oil. Google hydrogendated oil - not pleasant stuff. When you read hydrogenated oil or partially hydrogenated oil think sludge for your heart and arteries.
