  1. How far away from the wall can you safely place a hot water tank? I want to move mine into the corner of the unfinished basement room I'm turning into a bit of a workshop. One wall is cement block and the other unfinished studs against the cement wall of the basement. I want to tuck it in as much as possible, so how much clearance do I need behind it?

I'll get someone who knows more than me to make all the gas/water/vent connections...I'm just trying to plan out the space.

  2. Some of you guys have a funny idea of what "free speech" is.

Sure...Phil can say whatever he wants to GQ or whomever else asks him for his opinion. He has that right just as A&E has the right to fire an employee who they felt violated their code of conduct. You cause your employers headaches...they might let you go. It's the same for all of us and has NOTHING to do with free speech.

I'll bet very few people who feel Phil's first amendment rights were violated felt the same when Bill Mayer got fired for his 9/11 comment about the relative courage of a suicide attack vs pressing a button that launches a missile. People are usually more eager to stand up for "freedom of speech" when they agree with the speaker.

Duck Dynasty is without a doubt the single most contrived "realty show" I have ever seen. Phil must have been aware that the Hollywood liberals who produce the show orchestrate every move they make and word they say...and that they're not going to stand by and let him jeopardize the revenue stream they've got going on.

A&E probably over-reacted, and since (I'm guessing) most DD fans aren't exactly offended by what he said, he'll probably be back on the show after issuing some sort of semi-apologetic statement or "clarification". Moreover, it's quite possible that they're purposefully milking the situation for publicity.

  3. Lol yup that's the scene you see at all mailboxes, garbage mail strewn all over the place. Does anyone even look at those things to buy from?

I have never seen anything like that at my mailbox. Come to think over it, I don't recall ever seeing a single piece of garbage at any of the three or four mailboxes I've used over the years. I didn't know a city in Canada exists that has residents that are the kind of inconsiderate slobs that would generate that kind of mess, and it's surprising (and disheartening) to learn otherwise.

  4. Hook sizes are the same as cable gauge. The larger the number, the smaller the size/gauge...up to zero. Then it goes 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, etc.

The actual size of hooks is not standard across the industry. One company's #2 might be the same physical size as another company's #1 or #3...or whatever.

  5. I don't think its a big deal to see harvested game on display. It wouldn't bother me personally, in the least.

I also don't mind seeing naked women. If you painted a mural on your van of several nude women performing various lewd acts...not unlike a dead deer, it wouldn't bother me in the least.

The thing is, I recognize that just because I don't get offended over something, that doesn't mean its not offensive by someone else's very reasonable definition.

It's pretty obvious by a few of these comments that at least some hunters display their quarry not despite the fact that it offends others, but because it does. Let's be totally honest here...there are some that get a little kick out of the shock value. We don't like the P3TA types...so knowing that we're offending those people is a little bonus. It reminds me of the time a very conservative guy I know asked me in a disgusted tone, "Why would you walk around with that long hair?"...and I replied, "To get that type of reaction out of people like you."

Hunters sometimes bemoan what they perceive as attacks against them and their sport by non-hunters. That being the case, maybe it's best not to shove it in the faces of those types. It just gives them a reason to complain. If you really don't want to cover up your catch, don't be surprised to hear people gripe about it...you're kind of asking for it.

a few opinions of David Suzuiki...

    "There are two David Suzuki’s.

Most of us know one of the Suzuki's. Let’s call him Saint Suzuki. That’s the Suzuki whose TV show on the CBC constantly lectures us about our lifestyle. He says we need to consume less, buy less and use less fossil fuels.
But then there’s another Suzuki. Let’s call him Secret Suzuki, because he’s far less well-known.
Secret Suzuki is the one who lives on Vancouver’s elite Point Grey Road, on a double lot, overlooking English Bay, right above the exclusive Kitsilano Yacht Club. The City of Vancouver assesses the land value alone at over $8 million. And that’s just one of Secret Suzuki’s properties.
He has another million-dollar home in Vancouver. And then there’s another home on Quadra Island. That’s three homes right there, if you count the double lot on Point Grey Road as just one property.
But then there’s his large property holdings on Nelson Island. What’s so fascinating about that one is that he co-owns the property with an oil company, Kootenay Oil Distributors Ltd. They don’t plan to drill for oil together. It’s a beautiful tourist spot — maybe perfect for a nice big condo development.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with co-owning any property along with an oil company. But isn’t Saint Suzuki against fossil fuel companies — especially oil companies?
Saint Suzuki tells us that the world is desperately overcrowded, that we’re overpopulated, and that we’re going to run out of things.
But in his own life, Secret Suzuki has five children.
There’s nothing wrong with having five children. It’s a blessing. But then why does he think other people should have fewer kids?
Saint Suzuki rails against corporations and profits. He even gave a well-received anti-capitalist speech at the Occupy Vancouver protest.
But Secret Suzuki himself has several corporations. One of them, the David Suzuki Foundation, took in a whopping $9 million last year and has $12 million in assets. More than 10 million of that is invested in stocks and bonds.
Saint Suzuki despises lobbyists, and says they have a disproportionate control of political power in Ottawa. But Secret Suzuki himself has nine paid lobbyists registered in Ottawa’s lobbyist registry. Not one. Nine.
Saint Suzuki despises politicians, and says they can’t be trusted. Secret Suzuki starred in a Liberal party TV ad along with former Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty.
Saint Suzuki says corporations have to be less obsessed by profits, and do more for the public good. They need to especially think of the interests of the next generation, our children.
But Secret Suzuki has made a tidy profit off young people. His standard speaking fee at universities in Canada is $30,000 plus expenses. He billed Quebec’s John Abbott College a cool $41,000 to visit them.
Saint Suzuki speaks in the language of tolerance and equality and liberalism — utterly politically correct.
But Secret Suzuki engages in conduct that should cause feminists to raise an eyebrow. When he visited John Abbott College, his assistant called with special requests to go along with his speaking fee. Here is an internal e-mail from the college’s Mary Milburn: “We have learned, via Dr. Suzuki’s assistant, that although the Dr. does not like to have bodyguards per se, he does not mind having a couple of ladies (females) that would act as body guards.” The college’s Jim Anderson got involved in selecting the coeds, too: “Please be certain that the women are nicely dressed, we don’t want them in evening gowns, but definitely NOT Police Tech uniforms.” All of this bizarre selection of girls, dressed just so, was the result of Secret Suzuki’s special request. If he were a conservative, he’d be called a dirty old man. But he ’s a saint. So the college went along with it.
David Suzuki is not a criminal. But he is not a saint. He’s a real man — a capitalist millionaire, a politician, a man with a staff of lobbyists, a prolific father, a wealthy landlord. If only he’d stop scolding the rest of us for aspiring to do the same.
    "

My doctor makes a very good living telling me to do things like lower my caloric intake and avoid fatty foods. He obviously doesn't take his own advice, because he's about five feet tall and easily over 200 lbs.

Just because he's done well for himself advising people how to live their lives (and doesn't live his life that same way) doesn't mean he's wrong about how to lose weight.

  7. David Suzuki is a sham, an alarmist, an extremist, as phony as they come. In the 70s he was one of many on the band wagon, convinced another ice age was upon us, now he is on the global warming pulpit. In a recent interview on the talk show Q & A on the Australian Broadcast Corporation, he was questioned about the science behind global warming, the stats the show the earth's warming has actually levelled off over the last 15 years, despite carbon dioxide level increasing exponentially every year. He was unable to answer the questions he was asked and knew nothing of the various world-wide temperature monitors. Many scientists now believe methane levels may be responsible for increased temperatures over the last century. But don't tell Suzuki this, as he does not know the science behind any of it, he is a fraud. I would not believe a word that comes out of his mouth, this is his latest soapbox stunt.

Agreed, suzuki is a scam, the Aussie interview was not the first time he's been exposed, but it was the best example.....on a side note, we've worked out at the same gym in dwtn Van, he's a complete dickhead and throws his name around like it means something

Although I don't think anybody can dispute the serious potential of this situation, everybody likes to portray the worst case scenario...media + fear = ratings....suzuki just jumped on the band wagon, something else to boost his fake image, since he's become a liability to his own cause he needs the boost

Lemme guess...these statements come from two right-wing conservatives. Am I right? I bet I am.

Why is it that non-progressives seem to think that it's not possible for man's actions to damage the planet and its ecosystems? Why do they feel the need to viciously attack anyone who attempts to raise awareness otherwise? I'd love for you to explain to me how the way someone acts at the gym has any bearing whatsoever on whether or not fall-out from a damaged nuclear facility is a danger. It doesn't in the least...but since you can't attack the science, you attack the individual.

I wish I, like you, could just deny we face many problems and challenges. It would sure help me sleep at night. The thing is that I'm well aware that there are people who would eagerly ignore long-term ecological risks in favour of short-term economic gain...and they are doing so right now. Thinking otherwise is beyond naive.

  8. I come here almost every day. I almost never post in the "fishing" threads, because there's usually nothing I can add that someone hasn't already. To be honest, I forget the last time I actually learned something here that I didn't already know. I have zero interest in anything about centre pins, salmon, fishing tribs, etc, and there's a lot of that here. Basically if it wasn't for the non-fishing threads, I probably wouldn't come here.

The locked threads are (for me anyway) by far the most interesting threads on this site. Whenever I see a thread is locked, I always click on it. Often I wonder why it was locked and think the only possibility is "too entertaining". That's on those occasions when the obvious reason for the lock isn't "too embarrassing to conservatives". Hey-oh!

    This thread will be locked.

  9. No actually you were "modified" for breaking the rules. I don't have anything vested in Canadian politics so I judge them not for there views but for their content as they apply to the rules.

please keep this civil and fact based and it will continue.

    Art

It seems somewhat disingenuous to me that you claim the mods here don't tend to be more lenient of conservative comments and commentators than progressive ones.

It's their site and they can control content in any way they see fit...but let's not delude ourselves.

Fishing is a traditional pastime and tends to attract individuals with traditional "values". The site administrators recognize this and would be cutting their own throats if they allowed a few wavy-gravy hippies to be spouting off ideology that most of the Community disagrees with or, in some cases, finds downright upsetting to hear. Who can blame them for crafting the page to appeal to their core audience? It just shows they're good at running the site that they do. If they were running a site for agnostic poverty-activists who are fans of the Daily Show, they'd be just as prudent to lean a lot further the other way.

They certainly do a good job of keeping things respectful. When someone (regardless of political persuasion) steps out of line, or things between more than one individual gets heated and civility starts to break down, they lock stuff up and reprimand rule breakers. I just think they tend to lean to the right in how quick they are to take action. But like I say, that's their prerogative and in the best interest of the site to do so.

By the way, if anyone knows of a site for agnostic poverty-activists who are fans of the Daily Show, please message me the link. Hey-oh!

  10. fishNwire,

The dying industry you talk about was surviving until the Liberals started interfering with it last year. The Liberals were warned about thousands of jobs being lost and business closures but in their infinite knowledge the Liberals went ahead with their plan as usual and devastated the industry. Now they are wasting 400 million dollars by throwing it into the wind to buy votes in the next election again. Important words for you to study carefully ....... >She caused the JOB LOSSES....She cause THE INDUSTRY TO DIE. Mistakes after mistakes and you defend them.

I can't afford a Liberal Party. They don't care about tax payers. All these mistakes are millions after millions after millions and billions after billions after billions in wasteful spending and cuts. Wynne's Green policy is killing Ontario. I am sorry you don't see that.

The list goes on and on. You certainly do sound like a closet Liberal to me or a troll. Sounds like you don't know that the Liberals are doing the same thing that you mentioned about the Conservatives but are causing much more damage to Ontario with their so called mistakes.

buddy...calm down. No wonder threads get locked on these boards so quickly.

I see you missed the part where I said, "I don't like the Liberals"...I guess me hiding it right at the very beginning of my post threw you. I didn't "defend" them either. So settle right down, Chum.

Obviously you can't handle hearing anything negative about your beloved Conservatives. Do you really think anyone who feels differently must be a "troll"?

Maybe if your gang's social platform wasn't repugnant to most Canadians, you'd win a few more elections and be able to implement financial policy. Too bad you folks are too busy worrying about stopping abortion and gay marriage.

  11. I don't like the Liberals and don't really care about horse racing. I don't agree with this move, but can see she's trying to (rightly or wrongly) save a dying industry and some of the jobs associated with it. The conservatives are all about giving BILLION$ in tax breaks, subsidies, and grants to extremely profitable companies who don't need the money except to further deepen the pockets of executives, owners and shareholders. I don't know why that doesn't outrage people more.

  12.

While we have excellent healthcare, too many doctors are very pushy and try to force induction upon pregnant women when it is totally unnecessary simply because the doctors chose a due date. We have a 5 month old and we spent many hours researching and speaking to new mothers about the subject before our little man arrived and the number of women who have been convinced to be induced on a specific day is mind boggling. They're essentially starting a process that the body and baby aren't quite ready for which typically leads to a long labor which often leads to further intervention such as pain killers, an epidural, or c-section. Recovery time is also longer for both mother and baby after intervention.

Some of the Bull and scare tactics a few doctors spewed forth made me angry as for many mothers they're promoting unnecessary procedures which greatly increase risk to mother and baby. So, for our child the lady went with no pain killers, no induction, had zero tearing/stitches (perineal stretching works!), and was walking around within a few hours and went home the next day.

Anyways, the moral of the story is I believe doctors sometimes push unnecessary procedures and medications upon many of they're patients.

Seeing as we're taxed out the yingyang, I wouldn't exactly say it didn't cost you a dime ;)

The inducement wasn't scheduled. The last couple of weeks the baby kept going in and out of breach, so when we went in for a scheduled examination a week before the due date and the doctor found the baby was positioned perfectly, she recommended we induce. My wife and I also "spent many hours researching and speaking to new mothers about the subject" and we were aware of the implications of intervention. We decided the risks of her going into labour while the baby was in breach far outweighed those associated with inducing.

I have to say that one of the most surprising aspects of being a new parent is how eager other parents are to tell you "you're doing it wrong" whenever they discover something you did that's different from the ideal way they did it.

I'd be "taxed out the yingyang" whether or not my wife spent the better part of a week in the hospital, so it didn't cost me any more than it would have if we never had a baby.

  13. Just had my first kid two months back. Wife had about a bunch of examinations, tests and ultrasounds leading up to it. She was induced and spent a day in a birthing room, before being given a C-section. Then she and the baby spent 3 days and nights in a semi-private room which she had all to herself. Nurses were in and out non-stop giving help and advice.

Didn't cost me a dime. I think some of it might have been covered by my insurance, but I don't even know. More than once I thought about how lucky I am to live in a country where the birth of your child doesn't cripple you financially.

Don't think for a second that there aren't people who would love nothing more than to see us move towards a system that is more profitable for them. Taking for granted what we have would be a big mistake.

  14. You have to wonder why they'd be contemplating another expensive war in a foreign country if they can't afford to keep their museums and parks open. Even assuming their motivations are 100% pure...I know if I couldn't pay my gas bill, I wouldn't be offering to help my neighbour out in at some endeavor that is crazy expensive and may have no end.

  15. Seems to me you are giving up a fair amount of the structure's inherent strength by not having that sixth side. I'm not worried about when it's set up so much as about when you go to move it. Also, getting your boots up off the ice makes a big difference in keeping your feet warm. IMO, the weight you save isn't worth it.

Bah!..what do I know? My hut weighs about a ton.

  16. I've got an '06 Kawi 750 Brute Force. I've heard of guys having problems with theirs, but I have "driven" mine, and it's been awesome to me. I'll admit I wanted to have one of the more powerful machines available, which you don't need...but I've never regretted!

That said the deal you mentioned on the Honda sounds pretty solid. As has been said, it's hard to go wrong with a Honda. If I was in the market today, I'd probably look at one.

Whatever you get, you'll want to maintain it and having service close by is a big plus.

    Have fun.

  17. I guess this should go under "Computer Help", but it's not really of a technical nature. I'm just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

I had EastLink as an internet provider, but recently switched to Bell. I noticed right away that the speed of movie/TV show downloads on Vuze (a bit torrent client I use) went way, WAY down. With EastLink they'd top out around 2.5 Mbps...I have never once seen the speed go above about 600 kBps with Bell. I spent an hour on the phone with their techies and they say everything is fine on their end. The speed test I ran shows I'm able to download at 5 Mbps...but when I actually try to download something it's about a tenth that. It doesn't matter if I use my computer or my wife's. I changed nothing except the provider.

I cancelled Bell and am getting Eastlink back. But I'm wondering if anyone has had something like this happen to them.

  18. The walleye fishing on the lower French can pretty dang' good in the fall. It might be a bit early still. A lot of 10lb plus fish are boated in October and November. There are guys I know who barely wet a line for walleye all summer...they wait till now (or later) and fish Muskie or whatever before that. They consider the season poor if they don't get at least one double-digit 'eye before freeze-up. Of course like the rest of the year, there are good days and bad.

Mainly they jig for them while drifting. One of my good buddies swears by propeller jigs. (Northland makes them). But whatever lead-head you want to use with or without (try both) a twister tail and either a worm, leech or minnow is the idea. I think about 80% of the fish caught that time of year are taken with something along those lines.

The thing there's lots of water and they fish in just a few specific spots. Someone who knows the area well is a big help.

    Have fun.

  19. A lot of tackle thieves do so to pad out their own collection. If that's the case, let's hope the gear is now forever cursed with bad "joo-joo" and that Karma will kick the guy in the butt with fishless days on the water while using it.

If you can wrap your head around such a fantasy it might help to lessen the sting, anyway.

  20. Fraying isn't the same as being nick resistant... I think we've all seen braid fray, that's nothing new. As for running over rocks and zebra mussels? I'll take mono/flouro everytime over braid.

no way braid is more abrasion resitant than good mono of fluoro...zebra mussels, rusty dock poles, rip rap, etc slice through braid like butter

I don't know what kinds of braid/mono/flouro you guys are using...but you're experiences are completely different than mine. I have found 8lb Fireline to be basically indestructible compared to any mono or flouro in the same weight. I've seen it fray to the point that it looks like old butcher twine...and it's still impossible to pull off a snag without using a glove (or cutting your hand). As for it "nicking"...I've never even felt, or seen a visible nick on my Fireline...unlike every kind of mono and flouro I've ever used. I can cut mono/flouro up to around 20 lb test with my teeth...good luck cutting Fireline with your teeth. If you chewed on it long enough, you'd get through eventually, but you'd never get that mangled end through the eye of a hook. About the only thing I've found that will "slice through braid like butter" is my Klein linesman's pliers. I usually use a 12 lb leader on my 8 lb braid, and my rigs break where the flouro is tied to the termination point, or a few inches from it, about 80% of the time. When I don't use a leader the braid breaks at the knot nearly 100% of the time.

It's funny how anglers will have total opposite opinions on things like this. It goes to show how much personal preference plays into one's experiences...and vice versa. A lesson one could take away is that while the experiences of others can be an invaluable resource...you sometimes just have to try stuff out for yourself and see what works for you.
