  1. I will have to agree,to have the Minister respond regarding restocking is very encouraging. The article on Seneca is very interesting. It makes sense to have all sides benefit from good fishing. First new idea I have heard in a while.

Unfortunately if we can't get beyond the dialoquing stage with the natives, we gain nothing.

  2. IMHO your spinning your wheels trying to manage a lake for sport fishing all the while it can be commercially netted....HOWEVER, perch are the #1 enemy to walleye fry...the more perch you have the lower chance ANY (natural or stocked) walleye fry have to grow large enough to spawn or be caught by anyone. Oneida Lake has seen a steady fluctuation of walleye depending on how large the perch population is...LOTS of perch mean a smaller percentage of walleye make it past the fry stage.

A native can do a heck of a lot more damage to the walleye fishery than a bunch of perch. Perch cannot take breeders.

  3. I'm 100% opposed yes I am but it does not make me racist is correct it's the way I feel and oh yes I forgot to say my girlfriend of four years is full native on both sides or her family she has no status card and does not believe they are entitled either !!!!

What is it with all the native unrest in this province. We in the London area just had a native protest about their treaty rights by having a peaceful march, meanwhile holding traffic on the 401hostage for a few hours. WHICH WAS ILLEGAL. The police did nothing and the natives knew that. They fell they are above the law and entitled. If we had a roman style of gov't we wouldn't have this problem. If you were conquered you abide by roman rule, abide by their laws, become an asset to the roman empire, or you wern't allowed to live. A little hard maybe, but in the end the rewards were the same for everyone. It,s either conquer or be conquered. Most of civilization was establihed that way

  4. Less native problems....I guess...MAYBE...all the Indians here care about is CASINOS....they are making a KILLING here in NYS with them....because of the temp casino (all slots for now) it forced the closure of your slot only casino that was part of the Fort Erie Race Track in Fort Erie, Ont...because of that the race track is now going to close after over 100 years of operation...

Give your natives lots of money and they could care less about netting any fish of any kind.... :whistling: ...that is why I suggested a small tax on resort owners on Lake Nip and a special stamp to fish Lake Nip...these funds could buy out native gill netters....we did the same thing here in the mid 80's on Lake Erie...a special $3 stamp to fish Erie for three years but after only 2 years they discontinued the required stamp because all the commercial gill netters were bought out and the stamp was no longer necessary...any extra funds collected on the special stamp and tax could go directly to stocking Lake Nip....Everyone WINS...oh, now that doesn't happen in any of our Indian Casino's...LOL....REMEMBER......IT'S ALL ABOUT THE.....

MoneyGrab.jpggetting back to the original topic of sending letters to the MNR, did any one get any response from them?

  5. Guess we're very fortunate on my home water, the best of which is all on Seneca Nations land. While they have exempt status as it pertains to regs, non-indians must purchase a Nations License ($35) which goes towards enforcement of regs and improved habitat. Additionally the Nations have built a walleye hatchery and are partnering with other state agencies to improve the lake. In the interest of full disclosure I must say the hatchery was funded by a federal grant, however the result is they are partnering if not leading efforts to improve the fishery. I'm told there was no netting last year, I know I never saw any nets. Limits were reduced to 4 fish/day, only 1/day over 21" on nations waters. A good step. It just made me wonder if some similar arrangement might work on Nipissing wherein hatchery/habitat improvement jobs, including knocking down the Cormorant population, might replace commercial harvesting jobs. One thing is for sure, all parties have a stake in the future of Nipissing as surely commercial fishing on the lake is not going to be a viable occupation in the near future without some major changes.

The natives on our lake have promises to set up a hatchery but haven't come thru yet. At the monenttaking them out is more profitable than puting any back in.

  6. Specific to what Terry said. The treaties were all signed and honoured long ago. This is not about land that was not paid paid out or a treaty that was not already signed, sealed and honoured. This is about a new claim to what the Algonquins are now saying should have been included in a claim a that was already signed ages ago. Actually they contested in court that there was no such claim. It was stated in court that there was no legal liability on the part of Ontario or Canada to forfeit this land through the court process. In an attempt for peacefull exchange the Ontario government said that they would be willing to negotiate some sort of settlement out of court settlement to make the Algonquins happy.

I would argue that this land was actually taken by force and claimed legally and it was forfeited over the course of the 500 years from when Canad was established and defended.

The reality is that a deal was struck to come up with some form of payout. The current proposal for land is in insane. What I think will end up happening is that anythin on crown will be given away and anything private will not. There will be native revolts as there were in caledonia and people will be hurt. Hopefully this does come to a peaceful end. However I can tell you that this will not likely be the last of it even when this has been agreed upon. There will be further disputes and claims resulting of whatever comes of this. That is just my opnion though.

One thing I agree with.IT WILL NEVER END and I will make another WE WILL ALWAYS GET THE SHORT END OF THE STICK

  7. Your catch limit is always your possession limit !!!! If your limit is 2 walleyes you are not allowed to keep anymore walleyes till those fish are consumed !!!! You cannot stockpile fish and count them as its ok to catch 2 more tommorow and 2 the next !! You can only do that if you eat your limit everyday then you can go back out and catch your limit again!! That's the way it works for whatever area or if you are in an area whith special regs or slots

Wow. looks like each of my family members will get a feed of pickeral once in 6 years if I go up once a year totake home 2 pickeral. And don't tell me to buy them in the store either.

  8. I keep telling you boys........BUY OUT THE INDIANS....problem solved...you only have to look at Lake Erie in the early '80's.....we had bought out ALL gill netters on our side of the Lake and now it's the BEST Walleye Lake in the WORLD...

Remember, it's ALWAYS all about the money.... :whistling:Billybob, you guys on the other side of the border seem to have a lot less native problems then we have. How come?

  9. I would imagine if someone ratted you out , and the MNR decided to a DNA test on your Walleye , if they are deemed Nipissing Walleye , then your ( at home ) possession limit , would be 2 fish per angler...

I can see this becoming a problem , considering that Nipissing is the only lake that has a 2 Walleye limit and is surrounded by 4 Walleye limit lakes , enforcement is gonna have fun trying to figure it out on a roadside spot check .

I thought if you are less than 18 yrs old you don't need a licence, so I would be legal to have 2 walleye in my freezer for each of my 4 children. Wife not included. They would have to prove that my children did not catch them. Am I right?

  10. Nope no nets in the river that I know of but there are in the Lake, it's not really a fair comparison but it shows what volunteers can do, if nothing was done there would/will be no fish, I personally don't fish for the Rainbows or Salmon on the Saugeen but lots of people do, baby steps are better than no steps & lets hope the nets can't take them all.

If the lake gets stocked with fish at least if the native's gill net size stays the same we might have a chance of catching a few before they get to them. I'm being a little sarcastic, but I'm sure as heck mad about the fact that the natives really don't give a rat's ass whether the fishery collapses. one way or another we will have to compensate them for it.

  11. The difference between winters and all seasons is huge. The costs are mitigated a bit by extending the life of tires by not having them on your vehicle for 3-4 months a year. In the end what is your and your families safety really worth? Eight hundred to twelve hundred over 4-5 winters is cheap peace of mind.

I'll take a front wheel drive car with winter tires over an all wheel drive with all seasons.

I couldn't have said it any better myself.

  12. You don't need a lawyer for that. When you purchase your 2013 fishing license, you will be given a copy of the regulations for you to adhere to. It's also your responsibility to keep yourself informed as to any regulation changes during the season for which that license was issued.

The mnr has a mandate to issue new licences every year. Any changes to the law has to be ratified by the minister of fisheries. Until then it is not law.

  13. They lay claim to the land and they suckered a group to manage it. At our expense of course. That mean we have to replace trees in the case of them wanting to do a little logging? How about fish stocks? Do we re-stock on our dime once they've emptied the bowls? On second thought it is Racism. Reversed Racism. Difference is we won't fight back. You want examples of land claims, there are plenty on the books, past present and more coming down the pipe. Racist???blink.gif

The natives don't want this land. The only thing they want is MONEY. 15-20 years ago the natives wanted ipperwash provincial park and the army land. The gov't gave it back to them and they absolutly trashed the whole area. They were dissappointed that they did not get a money settlement. When is enough enough?

  14. Here is a question that I have heard a few times.

Can the MNR change the regulations without a sitting Parliament?

What I'm saying are the new limits valid?

They call it a lame duck parliament so I guess any laws the mnr pass now has to go thru parliament to be ratified. So until the parliament session resumes sometime in the new year we can still catch 4 walleye. Any lawyer want to respond?

  15. Jim C. Let me try.

This is the way I understand it and plan on fishing. I fish with my 9 year old son alot and hope I can keep our 4 fish on consectutive days.

If I as a lone fisherman who has a wife and 4 children, go out 6 consecutive days, take home the fish, clean and freeze them, and on the seventh day eat them with my family, am I doing this legal or not?

  16. Are we going to have to shut this one down too?

If you are referring to what I said then I apologize.I was just trying to say that the only time that I can enjoy to go fishing a couple times a year that I'm frustrated that I can not even give my family a feed of walleye. If everyone took as little out of this resource as I did, there would not be any problem the walleye.

  17. Ya, when the fishery is in trouble, then it is too much to ask. If you arent willing to do your part to protect the fishery, then You dont deserve to come the 300 miles to enjoy our resources. Want fish that bad? Buy some fresh Walleye on your way home so you can "cut the mustard"

Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning? I pay the full licence for the year and I only make up to two trips in the winter because my vocation prevents me from fishing in the summer. I AM NOT A LIABILITY TO THIS RESOURCE. Prove to me that you put less pressure on the resource and I will let you have your say. May that cut the mustard.

  18. May I suggest a solution to eliminate Gill Netting on Lake Nipissing.

Impose a small tax on all the resorts on the lake....Like 1/2 to 1% on rentals...(details to be worked out)

Also impose a "Special" Lake Nipissing STAMP that all anglers must purchase and apply to their fishing license...let's say for example $5 per stamp...then both monies collected from the resort owners and fishermen would pay the "NOW ACTIVE" gill netters on Lake Nipissing an annual stippen up to the amount they have averaged over the last 3 years until these "Active" netters are deceased. NO NEW GILL NETTING WOULD BE ALLOWED and those "Active" netters would have to turn in their equipment (nets only) and no longer be able to legally net fish of any kind on Lake Nipissing.

Also any extra fund (if any) would go DIRECTLY to a stocking program for Lake Nipissing ONLY...

Details could be worked out...Like this program ends after all "Active" netters are deceased, actual amount of the tax and stamp, etc...

This way only those actually fishing Lake Nippissing are the ones contributing to the cause....the resort owner would of course pass on the cost of their "Special Lake Nippissing Tax" to those who rent from them. But in the end this would help the resort owners tremendously.

BobHow much money do we have to give them for the problem to go away?

  19. There are lots of people that go catch 4, 5 or 6 fish depending on the species & the Limit, go home clean & go back to do this again, 2 or 3 times a day & maybe numerous days in a row, they are worried about getting caught going home but not worried about getting checked when their catch is cleaned & put in their freezer or given away & go back & catch another limit the same day, if you drop the limit to 2 that means if they keep doing that now they will have 6 fish a day taken home in 1 day instead of 15 or 18 fish a day, I really don't think anyone needs that much in their freezer but maybe I'm wrong, 1 easy thing to do is take picture, document what you see & report it

Just My .02 Tight Lines SBKGonefishing.gif

I don't think that there are too many of these people that do that. Are you saying that that is why nippissing is in trouble?

  20. Although not a solution to the current problems regarding Nipissing, but....maybe its time for meat hunting anglers to become more conservation minded. I have no problem with eating the odd catch here and there, but cancelations due to a decrease in possession limits? Whatever happenened to fishing being a relaxing activity, to enjoy being on the water with friends, and for the thrill of the fight. Catcgh and release is pretty rewarding as well.

Want to eat lots of fish? Go to a store. Its usually the ones doing the most complaining, are the type that are responsible for the current state of declining fisheries to begin with.

If I come once or twice a year, travelling 300 miles, I would love to bring home a feed for my family. TWO DOES NOT CUT THE MUSTARD. Is that asking too much for paying a years licence? I'm a fruit and veggie farmer and cannot take time to fish in the summer. Some people are not meat-hungry fisherman.
