  1. Thanks for the replies! I know it doesn't appear too cold, especially considering Josh goes out in winter with shorts on. haha but at one point I had three shirts and two sweaters on and was still chilly! When the sun popped out it was perfect weather, if it was rainy and windy it got pretty cold on the lake.

I had gotten only pike and brookies, but Josh caught 5 species of fish! He caught Walleye, Pike, Brook Trout, White Fish, and Lake Trout! (He also caught some sucker fish but we don't count those lol  )

  2. Howdy fishermen/ladies

I wanted to make a post to tell you about my fiance's and my trip to Northern Woods Lodge last week. It was quite a drive up but it was worth it! Northern Woods Lodge is North of Lake Superior and off Long Lake, and is a great place to get lost in the beauty of Northern Ontario. The views were amazing!

The owners Lorna and Terry were great, everything was clean, taken care of, well maintained, and Terry was able to point us in the direction of some good creeks and little ponds/lakes while we searched for Brookies, and when we weren't boating around Long Lake.

Mother Nature was not cooperating very well.. it was quite chilly and the water was high because of the spring (or lack of) that we've had this year. We went up expecting to catch a ton of average fish, instead we caught a few monsters! Well worth the trade in this instance. I can't even imagine what it would be like if the weather had been nice this year.

Here are a few pictures :)

-I'll add a couple more in a second post because I'm over the limit...

    Pictures:

-Biggest Pike we've ever caught (caught on a fly rod) - we actually caught a few more relatively close in size but not as impressive as this guy!

-Biggest Brook Trout we've ever caught :D (and I caught it! muahaha...)

    -Josh fighting the Lake Trout

-The only/biggest Lake Trout we've ever caught

-A view from one part of the lake

It was not the fishing experience we expected but it was just as great :) - next time we go North I'll make sure it's a bit warmer outside.. haha

  3. my wifes uncle owns a lodge on long lake

it has excellent walleye and pike fishing, and i mean EXCELLENT. Like bucktail said, for pike, find the shallow weedy bays and transitional areas and you're sure to get on some bigguns

as for walleye, they're everywhere...last i heard, they stocked the lake with walleye, so you're going to hook into a lot of dinks, but i know there are regularly 7-8 pounders pulled out of there

my experience with the lake ends there unfortunately...theres tons of perch in that lake as well, and nice smallies in some areas, but when i go up there its to pull in those northerns and wallies

if you need any other info shoot me a PM...good luck, and take lots of pics!

Thanks for the info! I didn't know they had stocked Walleye, they are always fun to catch!

  4. If I rememebr Long Lake is pretty deep in the center so if your going for pike try those rocky points at the mouths of early shallow weedbays.

Temps should be in the fifties there and a few big ones should be hanging out on each transition area.

Wish i couold help you more but good luck and post lots of pics when you get back!!

    Darren

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind for the pike, and we will definitely post pictures afterwards!

  5. Hello!

My fiance and I are going on our annual fishing trip next week! ^_^ We are heading up to Northern Woods Lodge on Long Lake. I was just wondering if anyone has been up there during this time of the year??

I am starting to make lists of what to get but it is always worth hearing the opinions of people who have been there.

We are fishing for all types, Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Pike, Walleye.. but we haven't had that much experience with Lake Trout and are wondering what the fishing will be like up there?

We've got the basics... jigs, gulp-minnows and grubs, rock walkers.. and of course we've got lots of fly fishing flies for the brookies.. but does anyone have any other suggestions of what we should bring with us?

It's always the worst when you get to a great lodge and don't have what you need ~_~ last time we drove 30mins out of the way to get more rock walkers because that was the big item where we were. I'm hoping we'll have everything we need this year.

As always I appreciate any advice and stories :D

  6. "Brokerage fee" is other words for they bring a manifest into Customs with a few hundred items on it and get it stamped.

If you're shipping international and you have an option to clear customs yourself (and you live in driving distance to Pearson airport) it's cheaper to just do it yourself. You declare it, bring a copy of the receipt, and pay taxes. The brokerage fee is because the shipping company is clearing it with customs on your behalf. (I've heard it can be up to 70-80 bucks but I think it depends on the weight of the item, and who is shipping it)

Also sometimes it may take longer if customs needs to examine it.. so I would find a tracking number and call someone to get the status of the shipment.

    Good luck!

  7. hahaha I love all the comments here! I knew OFNers would understand my outrage! :D

“Some folks just can't stay focused long enough to truly enjoy fishing.” - I wish I'd thought of that one at the time! lol

and "Just think how much more crowded the water would be if everyone like fishing" - so true! Keep the obnoxious away from our lakes and rivers.

  8. I used to just think of myself as a fisherman's girlfriend, but I can tell now I am definately a fishergirl in my own right. haha

I'm having dinner with some friends and one of them had a cousin from Germany over. I was asking him what he did when he was here, he said he went to Vaughan Mills Mall. so instantly I go "DID YOU VISIT BASS PRO SHOP???" (Considering my boyfriend and I practically live in that store I was psyched to see what he thought). He starts to go on about how crazy it is you can buy a boat in a store and how they don't have malls in Germany. I say "Yeah but did you see the fishing stuff?!" He says "You fish?" and quickly I'm like "YEAH ^_^ it's the best!" thinking of course that it will be a positive.

and (I kid you not.) he says "But... how can you stand it.. fishing is like the most mind-numbing boring thing there is."

    O_o.....

    I was outraged!!!!

I start to tell him about fly fishing and looking for pools and currents, and figuring out what fly and lure to use, and the different seasons and about how gorgeous some of the fish are and the beauty of Ontario rivers and lakes...

and he goes "you just sit on a boat doing nothing for hours"

    .... .....

"... WELL clearly you've never caught a fish before." -me

END of conversation. I was so ticked off.. lol 6 years ago I'd never been fishing before, and now I couldn't believe I took it so personally!

    ;) Guess I'm a fully converted fishergirlfriend.

  9. Youtube and Fishing Network television channel 24/7 lol

The t.v shows usually have a lot of cool tricks and tips (it's how I learned about ratting 1-2 trick)

It's also cool when you start recognizing the hosts on the lakes! (We saw Mercer's subway boat this summer before it was given away!)

(clearly not books.. lol but another good suggestion is go to Chapters when you have a few hours, grab a chair and see if any of the books there speak to you)

  10. Thank everyone, it was a fantastic week! and we were happy everything worked out great in the end.

    @ Brandon

It WAS Indian Chutes! Josh and I saw and it and he was determined to get down there, after talking to Bruce and Jennifer about it we learned about a path going down. Well worth it :)

    @ Jason

Thanks again Jason for the awesome tips. We really appreciated it! :D

    @ Frankie

Me too! We were fishing in the boat and it just walked out RIGHT in front of us. Before I got that picture I was struggling to get the camera out of the boat bag but there was actually two bucks who walked out and they fought. This guy was the victor and got to stay in the watering hole. SOO cool.

  11. Hi OFC'ers

(Due to my computer failing this is the second time writing this, so sorry if it's not as detailed as I originally planned! Hopefully everything works properly now!)

Just got back from Golden Eagle Camp and we had promised to post some pictures!

We had an amazing time and kudos to Bruce and Jennifer for all the hard work they put in up there! :)

    During our trip there....

Fish Caught: Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Pike

Techniques Used: Trolling with a worm harness, jigging, fly fishing with streamers, couple fish on a spinner or crank bait.

Now to the pictures! This should be a nice overview of our time there! :Gonefishing:

The cottages are really nice, it's such a welcoming environment, and good people all around!

    GoldenEagle1.jpg

    We got some nice pike,

    GoldenEagle2.jpg

Also some smallies, (Josh lost a real big one when it jumped right beside the boat, but luckily another decent one came by) ;)

    GoldenEagle3.jpg

Walleye were perfect eating size and we kept a few to fry up, (I did eventually figure out how to hold one without the net but it took a few tries and the picture is rainy lol)

    GoldenEagle5.jpg

    GoldenEagle6.jpg

Saw some really nice wildlife and the hunters up there nabbed some bears, this one was just grabbing a snack from a waste site!

    GoldenEagle9.jpg

^The first bear we've ever seen! Pretty cool.

    GoldenEagle8.jpg

Amazing views, expecially at the outpost lake Bruce took us over to.

    GoldenEagle7.jpg

Josh caught a few pike on the fly!

    GoldenEagle91.jpg

On our last day Bruce told us about a path to get down to a dam we saw earlier in the week so we took the morning to check it out and we were glad we did!

Great memories! Thanks for everything Golden Eagle! B)

  12. My eldest daughter will be off to University this fall and asked me if I would post this here.

I generally don't solicit this type of assistance, but what could I say, what would any parent say. :)

She (Mackenzie) is a bright kid who has stayed solely focused on her academic career throughout high school at the expense of her social life, not easy to do with all the pressures teens face these days. Also for the last 2 years she has been working evenings after school and 9 hour Saturdays (while maintaining top grades) to help pay her own way through school. She's now found another way to earn some money.

It's an essay contest with a number of prizes to be awarded to those achieving the most votes.

What she's hoping to achieve through dad's post here, is votes from the good folks at OFC.

You can view her essay here.....

    http://crosslites.co...88e53e4af40468b

and if you believe it worthy of a vote or two, please do. She'll be thrilled!

Apparently you can vote twice a day and it runs till December. I won't pin this but I'll likely bump it back monthly till it's over.

With thanks to all, a loving Dad. :)

vote'd! Good luck to her :)

  13. Just download the music you want and put them in an easily accesible folder. buy some blank cd's (I don't recommend rewritable if you're unexperienced) Ask an employee for a recommendation to make sure it's compatible with car players (most are but some are data based for pc only).

If your computer has a cd burner it should have come with a program to make cd's. Insert the blank cd and the program should respond, or give you an option to start burning.

Most burning programs lets you drag the songs onto the playlist and then select "make cd" or "burn cd"

It all depends on the computer and program but all the ones I've seen run pretty similar to each other.

GOOD LUCK! (I've made disney cd's for the girlguide girls i work with and they loved it) :)

  14. Well so a lady(recently divorced) at work, was talking to me and she tells me about how her van got stolen and she didn't have theft coverage. I was talking to her about how to make a claim with her home insurance for the items in the car as I had mine stolen before as well.

Anyway she gets a call from the cops on the weekend... Maam we found your car at such and such. She goes down and its upside down in a ditch completly totalled. Well it turns out four 14 year old kids stole two cars, went joy riding(off road) and totalled both cars. Now of course she gonna get nothing for the car, and nothing from the insurance, now she has to pay ot the loan, get new car seats, pay for a rental to commute to work til she buys another car, and to boot she is paying for the tow truck removal of the car from the location, and storage until it gets sent to the wreckers.

Seriously what the hell? I mean someones gotta go bang 4 doors down and hold these kids upside down until they our there parents pay for the damages. What kind of an screwed up world do we live in? She feels bad and doesn't want to sue the kids parents but seriously. DOes anyone know a pro bono lawyer that needs some hours that could help this lady out?

I would have no idea what to do.. except hunt down those kids and let them meet my fist. That completely sucks, hope it turns out okay..

  15. i heard to get long rose stems with thorns. place them around your garden (a couple lines thick i imagine so they just won't jump over them) as soon as the cat realizes its little paw might get pricked it won't go in there. or pine cones probably due the same

also certain smells - lemon peels/citrus peels (but they have to be replaced)

-also heard coffee grounds..lavender, or motion detector sprinklers

i haven't tried these things as i've owned cats most of my life, but i understand not wanting to be afraid to put your hand into your garden and finding some poop. haha

just don't use those moth balls because they're toxic to kitties!
