  1. I took Ethan down for a walk to the dam tonight and ran into a complete idiot. He was fishing right at the dam, while it is a santuary, keeping as many fish as he wanted. When I told him(nicely) he could not fish there right now he started screaming at me,calling me every name he could think of(in front of my 6 year old son).then he told me the rules don't apply to him,to get my facts straight and that he will keep as many fish as he wants. He acted like this and said it was his right because he has a status card and can do whatever he wants(his own words). He waved it in my face and dared me to call the MNR.My question is do none of the rules pertain to natives? Before this thread goes a certain direction I am not saying all natives are like this just this idiot.I am going to look at the rules online as not quite sure how this works but to be this big of an idiot in front of my kid and flaunt/taunt is just uncalled for. They already had a milk crate full of bass and were still fishing. If you are wondering how I handled this I told him to smile as I took a pic of the three of them and pics of their truck and plate in the case this is wrong.any insight as to the rules and if this is right or wrong. Will post what I can find.

The fact that they will eat those fish is punishment enough...lol.....

How bout the netting boats for salmon and steelhead...?

Its the way it is in ontario....try quebec sometime in the mid-north zec's for specs and lakers,....Its worth the $100 in permits and licensces and the travel just to experience how they manage their fisheries....when there is a problem suspected with the health of the fishery by a CO that patrols his area,...its SHUT DOWN...TO EVERYONE ...until the problem is resolved!!! As for poachng incidents...they are makedly reduced over Ontario!!!

We are however talkin native fish in lakers and specs,...salmon and steelies are introduced,...somewhat self-sustaining species in the great lakes...Its not a big priority on a CO's list in ON,...with huntin and all...Its unfortunate,...I would personally trade in all salmon for a better managed steelhead fishery in the great lakes,...hands down!!!

  2. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetttt.............My instincts told me to go North yesterday,..but somebody talked me into going east just cuz he caught his first fish there after 51 outings,...and East SUCKED.....not Mentioning any names...lol Got to remember to ALWAYS TRUST MY INSTINCTS,....Awesome report,...thanks for sharing!!!

  3. chances are if you hook a fish in the mouth it is going to come up to the top of the water and headshake...there is a noticeable feel when a fish is shakkign it's head back and forth that can't be mistaken.

You put a hook anywhere else on a fish it's most likely just gonna rip around the pool and your line will be vibrating. Headshake feels alot different compared to a fish hooked in the arse

Break off your fish that are snagged, far better chance they will survive and whoever thought that you need stronger line for bigger fish was clearly an idiot...anything over 8lb in most lake ontario rivers is complete overkill and un-neccessary, just because the fish weighs 20 lbs doesnt mean you need 20 lb line

    Nate

Thanks Nate,..took the words right out of my mouth,...somewhat...lol,....I landed a 25lb nook on 4lb drennan lead,...quality is quality!!!

  4. This assumes the fact that the fish is tail hooked or otherwise hooked in a fashion that increases it's leverage.

Would you then suggest that a musky that takes a solid swipe at a 12" Jake and misses and gets hooked in the back would then be better off dragging that lure around?

How many people are able to tell without a visual confirmation that a fish is foul hooked until the fish is landed???

I disagree wholeheartedly that cutting of a fish is a better option than landing and removing the hook.

When you talk about salmon, the point is moot since the salmon are put and take anyway.

Unless the hook is within 1-2" of the mouth, it is quite easy to tell if it foul or fair,...comes through experience really,..headshakes vs a sideways struggle is one sure way,...

regarding the debate over whether the fish should be fought and released properly if foul hooked or just broken off,....there really should be no debate,..the regs are wrong,....if you hook a fish legit in the mouth you can play it out and land and release, or even keep it...no problem....if it is hooked in the tail of belly,...apprarently playing it out and releasing it tires the fish out too much and it will die,..am I missing something?

Not too mention what these fish go through to get to where they are going can involve 10000x more energy than a 5 minute fight.

As for the fish swimming around with a hook stuck in it and line etc trailing,..well If someone was fishing properly ,..it would be a #12-14 tiny hook and maybe 2-3' of 6lb lead,..not that big a deal since the hooks are supposed to work their way out in a day or 2.

Probably the most important point is that any experienced steelheader will tell u there are many ways to AVOID fould hooking a fish. Just My $0.02

  5. that video proves nothing! maybe he hooked it in the mouth ive caught plenty of salmon this year in the mouth and i've snagged a couple on accident so unless you see them walk in and rip their hook through the water in front of one its not poaching.

that fish was obviuosly hooked in the tail by how it was struggling,..these guys are not even fishing a pool but it looks to be 1' of water,..very obvious and intentional snaggin,...if you truely know how to catch salmon or other river run species, you would see the difference,...that video is pathetic but typical!!!

  6. I'M NOT POKING THE HORNETS NEST ....

with the technology of today a cell phone can go a long way in court... it can take a picture ..

film a videoclip... serve as proof to time and date ... has a trackable signal ... and better yet can be used as phone to call for help or to REPORT A POACHER .. :thumbsup_anim:

I reasoned with a few out of town poachers this spring... i explained to them that this was my hometown water and that fishing was closed...if it would have been open i would be fishing right beside them...and that the regs book was in plain view sitting on a tackle box...it was a sanctuary :wallbash: .

they had a cage full of fish from walleye ,white bass, catfish , and some suckers...

I was called a , Trailer Trash Redneck and was told to go get myself a fresh bag of CRACK..and was i gonna pay for their gas back to Oakville <_< .and to leave them the F alone.. so I did for about 10 minutes I then came back with my freind Rick he's the local C/O...

In the meantime i told Rick what had just happened... he proceeded to lay 3 charges per person..them told them politely that they would have to pay their own gas to and from Oakville because they now had a court date... :clapping:

took their gear and fish and put it in the box of his truck. :clapping: :

I then received a Handskake and a MNR keychain.. not to mention the satisfaction of having made a little dent in the poacher population :stretcher:

That is absolutely Incredible,...good for you for not losing your cool at the snide comments,...I dont know if i would have had the patience,..but then again I dont have a CO for a buddy,..never even seen one in fact,...good to hear charges were laid,..dont hear that very often compared to what goes on!!!

  7. never tried the seagar,...but remember marketing is marketing,...i like mono mains like maxima,..and raven and drennan for leads,..no reason for me to switch yet,....you could drop a paycheque every pay period trying out all the new gimmicks,...dont fix it if it aint broken,...Ive yet to have a salmon or steelie break those leads,...in fact i landed a 25lb nook a week ago with 6lb drennan,....12 lb main,..and 12.5' rod on the centrepin and an 18lb on the same gear with 4lb drennan...just my experience

  8. why not say something to the poachers? I have many many times,...they usually leave,...I have also gone so far as to cut lines,.. or you could stand there and call the OPP and let them know you are calling,..see if they stick around,...Education works well to for the right crowd,..bring a net and land the fish for them and then let it go,...if you beleive in 'Anti-poaching',..stand up for it!!!

PS,..not advocating violence or anything,...just read that other post that is now locked,....I believe the incident happened in Sutton? I lived near there for a brief period of time,..interesting place...lol.....and they dont much like anyone from outside of georgina in there stomping ground,..in the summer,...if your drivers license says your from georgina,..its free to park by the beach,...however if it doesnt,..they charge u like $40 or something crazy to park,..then if you go to the beach you will quickly realize most of the visitors are not from Georgina.

PSS,..on the education front,..maybe NOT having ads on websites like this saying....'bag a freezer full of walleye everytime you go fishing',..may help,...im not sure thats sending the right message!!! :wallbash::rolleyes:

  9. :whistling: afissin l will go :whistling: afissin l will go :whistling: high hold the rainbow :whistling: a fissin l will go

    Peace Ken

and Milty the CP is the cheapest thing you have lol

Actually shep its the most expensive,..by far,...thanks for buyin it ,..im sure its the least u could do,..after me getting you hooked for life!!!...lolol

Still not sure why u keep wanting to go east over north,..even though what you've seen me do and where..which is nothing compared to previous years....;),...dont worry i got a tripod...LOL!!!..but you are the shep of sheps!!!... see no M,...lol

  10. MILTY

I know Ken is due.... And the conditionsa re perfect fro sat... Wish I could go..

But remember FRANK got cheesed on LOL on his first time out.... He will always remember that now for as long as he fishies for salmon

    Dave

Dave,..Too bad your workin,..maybe sunday or next week,..i got some spots to show you,.....'Frank got cheesed',..whats that mean,...? these are real guide waters as u know..,..i share with you,..but after that it costs for others,..and that price is toooo high fora anyone...lol,...... :whistling: ..you know how it goes...

  11. Here it comes...

once again... the purists show us that they are elite and the rest of us are the green algae that muddy the waters... I cant wait to see the pictures of fish being held up by the CN Tower, or Loblaw's... tis the season for the elitist's amongst us .... BTW... this only happens during "their" season.... I tend to say things as they are.. some care for it some dont.. so here it is... scrap your holiest then thou bull and fish for the sake of fishing... that is all it is about... a tug on your line... not how pretty you look, not how much your centrepin is worth, and not how hot your ass looks in your 1500.00 pair of waders... it all comes back to basics... the tug on your line.

I am tired of seeing kiddies posing for pics while landing fish... I have also seen these so called purists clean fish on the banks stuff them into their 300.00 camo backpacks and head further upstream.. after posing for pics BTW...

I remember when I was young... I fished out of a piece of crap boat, had a cheap Johnson closed face reel and only God knows the name of the rod.... and you know what?? I wish I could fish like that again today... That was fishing when I was young... being out there with my dad and grandfather just to be out there... Not to host a fashion show!

    Has technology advanced?.... Yes!

But to some onto forums bragging about how hot your ass looks in your waders or your 900.00 centrepin is stupid in my opinion.. nothing but sheep... seriously...your nothing but sheep.

Have fun with your over glorified fashion show on the rivers and creeks...

I hope your making those 50'ish guys on the other side of the trib sweet on you... as they are the only ones your impressing with your hot ass in your hot waders...

I promise I will not make another post about the elitist's as I am tired of God like Bull... another year another elitist catching fish in the ACC

    Gerritt.

Gerritt,...Besides my Islander centrepin,..this is what my stuff costs when i go up river.....$100 floatrod, $100 waders,...$40 chest pack and maybe $150 of gear inside,....thats probably less than the gas on your boat for a few weeks..but I catch dozens and dozens of steelhead in a beautiful natural setting with noone around,...I'll go head to head on a stretch of river that I fish (which takes effort and knowledge to find..hence the lack of pressure)..with any guy in a $3000 get-up... any old day of the week!!

For everything else there is mastercard!!!

,...Quality is quality same as boats,..but it doesnt make the ANGLER!!!!

  12. I just don't see why people want to catch fish that already look dead by the time you reel them in. Fishing for salmon at piers and mouths of rivers is ok as the fish usually have some colour and life to them still and haven't yet been beat up by the rocks and brush of the rivers and creeks . IMO once they hit the creek rivers and especially the creek-sized rivers, they should be left alone to do their thing. I know they will bite/attack spoons and other baits when they are entering the rivers but trying to get a near dead fish to EAT your lure in a pool the size of a hot tub and 3 feet deep is probably about as likely as having a carp randomly decide to chase and eat your spoon. I just don't understand why ppl enjoy the act of catching fish that look like they are rotten/decaying. It must just be for the overall size/weight of the fish to impress others. I mean, if you were to show a pic of a river/creek salmon to your uncle who doesn't fish or your grandmother they would probably think that you caught the fish of a lifetime. In reality, the fish is near death and most likely could be kicked onto shore and merely picked up. A few years ago I visited Bronte creek for the first time and was amazed at the literally hundreds of dead salmon along the creek that were in piles all over the place where people had clearly stood over small pools and snagged fish, slit the bellies, taken the eggs, and then threw them into piles 1 foot from shore in the water and as well scattered them all over the shore I guess that's fishing...

Lures up river,..lol,..thats called snagging,...try 4lb floro leads with #14 hooks with roe etc...

  13. What a joke. "Guiding" the rape hole at record low flow for decomposing chinooks. Any real steelheader wouldn't even think of fishing that spot in these conditions. But hey, to each their own I guess, whatever makes you feel like a champ :clapping:

Its funny that Noone considers fishing this hole ethical,..but everyone knows it...LOL... ,..personally it was my first and last time there,..but fun none the less,..for what ever its worth AGAIN,..all fish were caught legit,..and released,..Beleive what you want!!! PS,..noone was guiding anybody,..dont even know where that came from!!!

  14. wow quite the response there Milty......solo ya think I might have drifted some of these rivers before lots were even born lol.......Milty low baseflow rivers that have immense pressure differ from say the geen the notty maybe even the nine ( which is comparable to the Credit) maybe the sauble or even some of the smaller ( even smaller say then bowmanville.) rivers Many a day on the Notty where the nook bite was unreal 55 to 60 degree water unmolested fish chompin fresh bags like its going out of style heck where you dont even have to move off the tin house because the bite was wicked. Too bad the access to the minnising is closed off the road as some true bush wacking in there for some serious unmolested fish used to be had. Now that was bush wacking and timber tussling

But and here is the but.....low to mid gradient rivers with the angling pressure these urban streams recieve with darkend up pre spawn fish that are in thermally stressed water with minimal base flow differs from say a fresh fish out of the notty or in the graveyard anyone with common sense knows that and certainly can dicephier between the two scenerio's but thanks for the education...

Now I guess you missed the point that we are talking Lake O tribs and in specific bowmanville but hey who am I to argue with a consumate angler who has been there done that.....

    louis Milo

The point was about all of the comments that said and up river nooks wont Hit,..and there were many of those comments on this and other threads,..congrats,..I was talking about the Notty specifically,..not sure about what tin roof you mean,..but there are literally hundreds of access points to fish the notty,..this was my first time on that little lake O trib and Probably the last,....but perhaps YOU missed my point, but unwittingly confirmed it at the same time...Way to go...lol

  15. Is there an echo in here??

Look at my folder and avatar, then look over to the shots taken on the thread. Don't tell me you can't see the difference. Bows will strike legit while they're upriver. That shot was taken in November, and the fish was released with nothing more than a sore jaw. Released, to do whatever it wanted. Some people don't get it, I call those people SIMPLE.

All Fish were released properly and took off with a splash,..so whats your point ?

  16. iTS FUNNY,...iM NOT used to the lake O tribs and by no means a fan of the crowds,...it takes away fro the experience for me,..Im used to tranquil settings,..with next to noone around,.....its the times I choose to fish,..which usually distract most people,..1 day after a rain,..Nooks on the move,...cruisin,..swirl around a pool,..2 or 3 or 4 of them,...sanppin at each other,..thats when i send a drift,..wham,..slam,..no lining,..no flossing,,..no snagging,....pure Hit ,...and for all you guys that only ever fish Lake O tribs with the crowds and the fair weather,....and think you know it all,...I laugh,..and thats ok,...you know it alls like BJ are entertaining,....go walk a km or two or 3 through the thinck brush or water,..(cuz there are no paths) on a big trib where noone else is fishing,...and its so stained you cant see the fish except for waves here or there,...and catch a chrome NOOK or 2 or 10 that have only been in the river for 1-2 days,..then and only then can you realize what me and a select few do,..that pool at b'ville is a joke,..but to extroplate that to all tribs and all locations and all conditions,..Is retarded,...you Know it alls should give your head a shake and get out there and discover what its all about!!!!,....Bring on the Steelhead',...and til then,...Nookie nookie,...

PS,..theres lots of places with steelhead already way way up,...i woulda figured the know it alls might know this already!!!...LOL,....ever think we post a pic of a nook instead of a steelhead,...at this time of year,..theres a reason!!!!

  17. LOL off BJ,..I think you just made my point,...lol,...One day,..perhaps when your old enough too drive you might understand!!! Its funny though,..how I remember you posting on another site that you always go to certain Tribs in Sept for Nooks to get eggs,.....if you can get your mom to drive you of course....lol.....interesting,..indeeed!!!!

FYI,..i think the point of his post was the action shots.... :whistling:

  18. Who would be envious of dirty half rotten salmon way upstream. Knowing Nater personally, he's an avid steelheader and everything he knows about salmon and steelhead comes from the years he has fishing for them on his belt.

I could understand if you haven't caught a salmon ever in your life before.. but Im pretty sure that 'avid' steelheaders such as D Masse himself know that salmon mean nothing to them. Why do you think I spend over fifty bucks on hooks a month once the steelhead are in with the salmon? I hook a salmon and snap it right off. I sure wouldn't like to deal with a half deteriorated tail and milt all over my breathables, especially all the bonus hooks you get with landing a salmon. It could sure send you into the EM if you do happen to get caught up in that treble hook.

Some say they hit out of agression and everything and I believe that because I have seen a salmon hit a shiny streamer before, but more than half the time you are 'flossing' them in the mouth, this is exactly like the pier marshmallowing technique. I have taken friends who have never caught salmon to that hole recently shown in the pictures above. They came out quite happy with the results, but they have understood what I was teaching them and they began to understand the concept of 'lining' or 'flossing' which makes tributary salmon fishing quite different, especially when you hook in the dorsals and other parts of the body more than half the time.

Bring on the fish that actually take a roebag or a fly for a change. BRING ON THE STEELHEAD!

    Just my 0.02 cents,

    Bojangles

Thanks BJ for your $0.02,..I think everyone here cept the newbies to fishing in general already knows alot of what your saying with lining and flossing etc.......'BRING ON THE STEALHEAD' is about the most useful part of your post,..no offence. Now consider the facts,...this was my first time fishing with DMasse,..and While I thought I was a pretty good river Angler,..I can tell you this,..Dave Schooled everyone at that hole,..hands down, bar none!!! With about 10 guys standing around this hole (not my cup of tea by any means)...Dmasse hooked into (legit hook-ups) 90% of the fish out of everyone there and every one was in the mouth (Nooks, Cohos & steelhead). Now get out your calculator and do the stats,..and figure out those odds!!! The funniest part is that he actually left for a long while cuz he felt bad as most of the time the rest of us watched him fight Fish. I am by no means telling anyone his secret, but maybe some of the youngens that are decent anglers, can take a slice of humble pie and realize,..They DONT KNOW EVERYTHING!!! Way to go Dave!!!
