  1. Beauty 'eye you nailed there, I'm guess you must have been in the east part of the lake.

I have fished Baptiste 6-7 times over the years and seen nothing but pike (tons of them), bass (LM/SM), muskie (once) and panfish. Never a Walleye, though I knew they were in there as they had been stocked in the past. I have focused more on the central/west part of the lake, and havent hit the east end of it yet.

All in all, its a gorgeous place to spend some time out on the water even when the bite isnt on! I personally love walking a suick jerkbait across the surface on a calm evening in dog bay over the sunken logs. There are always agressive pike ready to ambush!

  2. Honestly I suspect that a significant percent of people who are flossing don't realize they are snagging fish. Since they are hooked around the mouth often, many believe the fish are hitting every time. It can be hard explaining to someone that they're snagging.

As for stopping, I would bet that even if most people realized what they're doing, they wouldn't stop. A salmon run brings out some of the most ridiculous anglers (apologies to those who legitimately fish for them, I know some of you do). It's there one chance a year to catch them and catching them is all they care about, technique is not relevant.

If people could bring big gill nets to the river and dredge anything swimming out of it they would....i think flossing is at least a smaller problem for the ministry to manage. Though I do believe if they catch anyone intentionally snagging a fish they will be fined. Guess with flossing its harder to prove.

  3. World war 2 grenade i snagged while fishing one day. It was waist deep and i didn't want to lose my set up so i decided to go unhook it. I get there i and i start feeling up around for my hook, when i looked down i realized i was feeling up the end tip of the grenade that never detonated in ww2 probably. Told some firefighters about it and they pulled it out gently lol.

    where were you fishing? Normandy???

  4. thanks for the comments guys! not sure if the pics show it, but it was a very old and weathered looking fish, maybe 20 years old (if they get that old!)... probably one of the main breeders in the lake over the last few years (small lake)....anyhow im glad its still swimming and hopefully has another couple spawning seasons left in it!

  5. I was out fishing a small backwoods lake in hastings county on sunday, and this bass hit a spro topwater frog bait around 9AM. Fish didnt fight as hard as some of the 3-4lbers ive pulled from this lake and looked old and tired. Unfortunately I didn't have a scale handy and wanted to get it back in the water and swimming asap so I just marked my boat on its length, and later got it at just slightly over 21". Biggest fish I have weighed out of this lake I caught a couple years ago at 5lbs 4oz, and I'm sure this one was bigger, wish I knew though! As a frame of reference im over 6'3". Forgive the lousy Iphone pics!

  6. Does anyone know where my best bet would be to go somewhere around Bancroft or Apsley Ontario to catch Walleye? Not looking for anything huge, just somewhere with decent numbers? I know this is mainly a bass area of ontario, but wondering if there is something around a 1 hour drive from that area?

I used to fishing the east end of the kawarthas (Stoney Lake) and found that it was really heavily overfished...

    Any thoughts?

  7. you didn't have a leader on did you? I always wondered how braids stand up to muskie/pike teeth... perhaps since it was 65lb it's a bit harder to cut through? opinions?

I use 14lb fireline for bass bass fishing and whenever I get to co-incidental pike, more than half of them cut me off...

  8. nice fish, but next time be a man and lip those bass! :thumbsup_anim:

Hahaha, I usually do lip them, but this was my first time using my new scale, never weighed any of my catch before... The tongs on that rapala definitely are the lazy man's way out! No wonder my thumb isn't as shredded up as usual!

  9. Hi All, Long time viewer, first time poster. Just thought I would share some pictures from this past weekend fishing a small backwater lake up in Hastings county (somewhere between Bancroft and Apsley). I have been fishing the lakes of this area for the past 10 years and I have to say the Largemouth Bass here are pretty tough to beat, the well-known lakes like Weslemkoon and Limerick regularily produce 5lbs+, and small lakes (like the one I fished this past weekend) where you have to hike into on logging trails have tonnes of 2lbs+ fish. The bite was definitely on this past Saturday, as it seemed the cool weather had them all pretty shallow. In all, Forgive the horrible photography, as I was relying on self taken pics (timer)!

Here is a good example of your average bass of the area, I didn't bother measuring but im pretty sure she was around 2lbs. I landed easily 7-8 of these over 5 hours on the lake

Here was a nice healthy bass weighing in at 3lbs 12oz.

This was the hawg of the day, taken from right on the lake edge in the tall grass, thankfully she ran out to deeper waters to fight instead of burying herself into the slop. Firewire came in handy here! Fish weighed in at 5lbs 4oz. For size reference, im 6'2" and that's a size 11 sneaker... The scary thing is, this fish looks a bit lean to me (post spawn?) and im sure with a good bit of eating could be close to 6lbs by fall!

All fish were taken on a 7" Berkley Power Bait Bungee worm in Black, Texas rigged and fished VERY slow. All fish lived to see another fight!

I wish I had an Argo or an ATV or something, to get into some more of these lakes, because there are some GEMS tucked away there, I hear there are some rainbow trout lakes in the area too! Anyone else fish this area?

    Kevin
