  1. Hey GCD, great report! That's not a bad day at all, seems like you always got catfish to fall back on, but that's a really nice bass! Too bad about not hitting the crappie, but I'm sure the next few weeks will bring them on. I've never targeted crappie, but have caught some while nightfishing for bass off docks with good lighting, in the middle of summer. I plan to go all out on them this spring in Ontario soon as ice-out. Always good to be on the water with a friend period! Good stuff.

  2. Well, there's a reason the site's stats are good. The site has well written and relevant content. I have to say there are about 7 different sites I read on the web on a daily basis (news, humor, and OFC!). Really.

I try to get an informed opinion on world news by reading as many sources as possible from mainstream to blogs, in terms of humor I like cracked.com break.com and ebaumsworld.com, and for my hobby its mainly OFC. I have to say the reasons are the great community, which results in FRESH and and QUALITY content being posted on.

That's really why the stats are so great, lots of quality content and constantly updated. And these are the results of building a great community, I have to say congrats to the admins once again this is quite impressive.

  3. "a few fries short of a Happy Meal!!!! "

That is my favorite expression in the English language! Besides "You're about one fry away from a happy meal," that's what someone said to me the first time I heard the expression

  4. I'm sure with the enthusiasm and amount of people on this site, it could be used as a really good wholesale distribution channel! If we can setup some sort of online payment system for this kind of stuff, the benefits to the users and people running the site could be huge!

  5. Hey noobie welcome to the board, i've seen people with an intro like yours (asking for hotspots early on) get thrashed in the boards so consider yourself lucky. It seems like there's more etiquette and tolerance to newbies on this board than before, which is good to see!

Don't expect people to just give out shore spots, mainly since they invested time in finding them and are like a secret. What would get you a better response is asking for more general 'areas,' not necessarily a hot spot but a hot area, and ask for tips about what to look for in these areas, and how to fish them depending on what you're fishing for. You'll like it here a lot, so much excellent knowledge and tips shared.

  6. Nice report, very beautiful looking walleye. It's not a bad thing to get outfished is it?!?!? I actually enjoy it, knowing the other person had lots of fun! My sister outfished me by far only on her 2nd time ever fishing, and 1st time on the ice, it was the best trip!

  7. "I've got no problem with harvesting animals as long as you use all of it."

Exactly my position. I would also add killing the animal in the shortest time you can to minimize suffering. Always fascinated me how the natives used every single piece of the animal they could, and very few pieces are useless...

  8. Wow, way to go!!! I've read how Simcoe has 50+ species of fish, and the Ling did stand out for me, it just seems.. so.. cool! And you caught a beast of a Ling, that must have been exhilarating. It looks like a monster pike coming out of the hole, I really like the markings it looks amazing, and a big one at that. All I have to say is...

CONGRATULATIONS!!! :thumbsup_anim: That's what it's all about for me, the THRILL.

  9. That's actually a situation I've been pondering over the last few months, what if I had to change my lifestyle because of a drastic change in conditions? I would gradually like to learn to 'live off the land,' being a city person I have a lot to learn, but am anxious to learn it. Pondering a hunting license, don't have any buddies that hunt tho, it's tough enough finding ones that like to fish down here.

  10. Nothing wrong with that! This is my first year icefishing, I've been at the same outfitter for about 4 trips, but spent 1 trip with a different one near LeFroy. Now the one at LeFroy was about 30ft deep, and I caught one perch the entire day there, it must of been a bad fishing day. The other outfitter who I've been to 4 times this year is between 8-12 ft deep for perch.

It may be that I'm a beginner, but I find being able to see the perch is a huge advantage. Like on Saturday I was able to screen out for only bigger perch because I could see every single fish down there. Being able to see them is a huge advantage to a icefishing beginner like me, and I also find being able to see the fish much more entertaining.

However, in 30ft of water I'd say you cut down on the likelihood of catching smaller perch, and sticking with the bigger ones. Not always, but I believe its true in general, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

This place I fished on Saturday seemed to be a 10ft sand flat situated right around a bunch of weed beds, I saw a nice diversity of fish that day! In addition to the many perch, 2 pikes (1 was about 4 pnds, not the 6 I previously estimated after seeing a bunch of pike pictures), and a new one for me... a HUGE catfish! This thing was massive, I'm not too good with catfish I know I caught a bullhead on Simcoe once before, but this catfish was BIG. By BIG, I mean at least 4pnds, it was about as big a fish that I've ever seen personally from a lake...

It was a sunny day, but I did well compared to the rest, I caught all the big oerch that I spotted which was quite a thrill, too bad they didn't visit the area more often. I'm going tmrw as well, that will be the 2nd time in 3 days, which is what I wish to do my whole life (fish all the time).
