  1. We used planer boards on a Musky charter I went on in Lighthouse Cove, Lake St.Clair. Our lines were all set within 40ft behind the boat! We caught a total of 8 Musky that day, with most of the fish being caught with the 12 - 20ft set rods! Planers seemed to work good, all fish were braught in fast for a quick picture and release. Yes I agree, if the lines were set at 200ft behind the boat, you would be releasing them to their death. But there are other ways to ensure that doesn't happen on planers.

    I agree with Roy...

For what it's worth it's my opinion too.

There should be no need for planer boards while fishing Muskie.

Most strikes happen close to the boat anyway...
My line is out ..maximum 1 full cast behind the boat or preferably closer.

For what it's worth this is my opinion.

  2. Ya just talk to the locals! Definatly pack big blade spinners, jigs, bodybaits, Heavy gauge hooks and leaders etc. I've fished around the Holguin area twice, dude the fishing there is awesome! If you get talking to a descent cat on your resort he may be able to hook you up with a friend of his that fishes! Thats what I did and got a full day "charter" for 45 pesos! Plus they cooked me a lunch and had cold beer!

This was just mangrove fishing not deep sea!

    Have a good time!

  3. Congrats on the bear.

Sure they do good work, but I had mine done by a guy for less than half of that and it looks identical. He does great work and a lot cheaper.

If you have pets don't have that rug on the floor!

Ya I'm learning that now, hard to keep the hair off!

  4. care to share what something like that costs?

Your lookin at around $1350 bucks! I never got the official weight of the bear, but it was roughly 300 lbs. The price varies depending on how big the bear is.

You definatly pay a little more, and it took a year, but it is truly one of the most badass rugs ever ha ha!

Can't say enough good things about Advanced Taxidermy.

  5. Here is one done on my bradley smoker

    Indian Candy

    1/2 cup course salt.

    2 cups brown sugar

    1 cup maple syrup

    1/2 cup spice rum

    1 quart water.

Brine for 24 hour,Rinse in cold water. Pat dry and sit for an hour should be tacky to touch. Smoke for 2 hours,Apple or maple chips. Leave in smoker for 7 hours total time at 130F to 140F

Less time moist, More time the drier it gets like jerky.

This will not last long so don't give it all away

Nice, just wrote that all down. Is less time 5 hrs then? or just no more than 7 hrs for moist meat?

Thanks again that looks like a tasty brineski!!

  6. www.smoked-meat.com I'm also "butcher" on there, navigate to "fish" and look for my post "cold smoked salmon start to finish" and there are many posts by other guys that are very good in smoking fish / meat... This was my "livleyhood" for many years (educated in the trade, grad of Vancouver Community College) i still butcher / cure and smoke meat at home :) i would not recommend using Nitrites unless you have an understanding if how they work and the advantages / dangers :)

Awesome, Ill definatly take a look!

  7. I just remembered this one, Its not for the smoker tho!

    Lake Erie Monster

    Texas Toast

    PineRiver medium cheddar

    Pickeral fillets(1/4pound)

    Mayo

Fresh Jalapeno or Relish or Both

    Pepper.

    Butter

This is good for 2 sangys

Batter Pickeral and pan fry in oil/or deep fry. Darryl Cronzys batter is sweet!

Butter TexasToast as you would to prepare a grilled cheese

Prepare a tartar sauce with Mayo and Relish , Pepper and lemon juice . I replaced relish with a Jalapeno because I dislike relish, and it adds a bit of zip to the sandwhich. You can add both together.

Preheat Oven at 350F / place buttered TexasToast on a baking sheet.

Put 2 pieces of cheese on each slice, put 1 fillet on 2 slices

Cook for 3 - 5 mins / Remove from oven and put it together.

Serve with the tartar sauce you made, and your good.

I found this in a Field&Stream mag so yes, there were a few more things it called for in this recipe, and correct measurements

but I have sinced lost the article and have just winged it a few times, and it turns out great.

I'm sure you could add whatever for flavour.

  8. Hey Pat,

Just a heads up that historically Smoke lake can be bit finicky for the opener...being a bigger lake it "can" be late thawing.

That and its a surprisingly large lake that tends to blow up in hurry which when heavily loaded for a trip...can be dangerous in that fridgid water. Hopefully your experienced in a canoe or in a group?

Either way I'd exersise caution...I've been on Smoke and set sail in what looked like easy chop, but it quickly became more then chop LOL...

Just bare that in mind when planning is all I'm say'n ;)

If your confident in your ability, or have a group for added safety your probobly golden but incase of nasty weather or late Ice....Make some Back up plans.

The porcupine route is a nice one for early trout BTW.

Its not what I would call a "banner" route for specs but it should satisfy your needs for a laker or chance spec.

Don't be afraid to explore some of the smaller lakes and creeks around.

Lotta folks stay on the well beaten path and those lesser traveled area's sometimes hold some gems

Normally I would agree, but in truth...I've caught some of my biggest specs in Lakes with high populations of Bass.

The tricky part is in these Algonquin lakes the Spec habbitat in the spring tends to be same areas Bass are spawning in.

I find Spring I can still locate them in the mouths of creeks, Boulders, shoals and fallen lumber as you would think but come the summer months in those bass lakes its like they all but disapear.

I wonder if they are feeding on the Bass roe, or fry inbetween the hatch????

Actually now that I'm thinking about it....the Saugeen is similar?

I've caught many an incidental Bass over the years while spring Spec fishing in the spring.

    mmm....food for thought :Gonefishing:

Thanks for the info,I'm not that experienced in a canoe, in Algonquin that is, so I'll definatly keep that in mind!

  9. Lack of brook + lake trout

    You too Cookslav! :D

Oh sorry, my misunderstanding. I hadn't realized what you meant when you said 'the AP bio'. I'm really curious about Sasajewun being seasonal since it's dammed. There must be awfully little water coming down the North Madawaska if that's the case. Hopefully I'll get a chance to check it out in the summer :). If I do I'll report back.

Fingers crossed. Wouldn't that be a change from last year eh?

This is my first time spring fishing in the park! Were most the lakes still froze over beginning to mid of May last year?
