siwash
Hey folks, based on these spec plate attached below, is there anything that indicates the length id the shaft? Short or long? thanks! Edited July 31, 2022 by siwash
glen
I don’t know about the spec plate. But the engine is a long shaft.
siwash
Darn. Can I use this on my current set up ? The other motor is a short shaft. Or is this not possible? Edited July 31, 2022 by siwash
aplumma
It will run poorly because the thrust angle is off. It could put excessive pressure on the transom. It may or may not get on plane. You will draft deeper so it would be easier to strike rocks. For the most part I wouldn't do it. Art

Terry
Looks like extra long to me
glen
If your just putting around like under 10mph. I’d run it.
siwash
Anyone want a 2000 Johnson 25hp ?! Otherwise a nice clean engine... electric start...
RandyLinden
You have measured the engine correctly. (From the mounting bracket to the anti ventilation plate) Short Shaft is 15" Long Shaft is 20" Extra Long Shaft is 25" Extra Extra Long Shaft is 30"

siwash
I measured 22" from bracket to cavitation plate... transom is 16" - so definetly too long..
siwash
Has anyone tried a jack plate ? Someone on i-boats recommended it.
glen
Or. Make boat transom higher. place engine on boat. Mark holes for mounting engine on boat. Drill out holes. Buy two pieces of 1/4 stainless steel one for each side of transom that are high enough. Fill void with wood. Go fishing.
glen
That engine doesn’t have the 5” removable section in the shaft eh? I had an even rude that did.
siwash
I suppose I could build the transom up. I'm shy by 7" or so. as for removing a section, not sure if that motor has that. How can I tell if it does? thanks
glen
If it’s convertible it will have a 5” section bolted in on the shaft. Just above cavitation plate. the jack plate idea is good but a 25 has some thrust. So jackplate or build up transom. It’s going to have to be strong. what hp is the boat rated for? (I’m thinking about how strong the transom is now).
siwash
The boat is rated for 40 hp. It's a 16' aluminum.
siwash
I'll add pic of entire transom. See if someone can spit a removable section.
siwash
Can you tell from this pic? Edited August 3, 2022 by siwash
glen
It doesn’t have the removable part.
glen
It’s rated for a 40hp that’s good news. It’s strong you need to either build up the transom or use a jackplate or run it as is at < 10mph.
siwash
Between building up and jacking it, which would you choose ? Factoring in cost and and ease?
GYPSY400
Yes that motor is a long shaft .. the motor will have another tag with the model number.. should be something like J25RLxxx . A jackplate is quicker and possibly cheaper, but a new transom would be beneficial for splash protection (backtrolling?) . after having both a short shaft and long shaft boats, I don't want to go back to a short shaft. Please provide a picture of your boat transom
