can anyone I.D. this fish?

This guy hit a crankbait in a shollow bay on a deep water north type lake. it resembles a chub but was 12" long. purple hue to the scales and soft finned.

We called them whitefish too but it's actually a fall fish. Did it make gulping noises?

 

They actually fight pretty hard for their size.

We catch them in the Ottawa river and use them as pike bait under a float. None better

i didnt notice it making any noises, released it right after photo. looked like nice pike bait
