First gar of the season

Lungelarry

Recommended Posts

Nice big Gar! I've only caught them in the 2-3 ft range... care to comment on their fighting ability? Interested to know if the bigger one's put up more of a tussle then the small one's I've caught.

Thanks,

HH

Here's a little snap shot of what it says on wikipedia about the longnose gar

The longnose gar ranges in length from 60–182 cm (24–72 in) and weighs 0.5–3.5 kg (1.1–7.7 lb); The world record is 50.31 pounds, caught in Trinity River, Texas in 1954; FishBase reports a maximum size of 2 m (6.6 ft). Average life span is 17- 20 years.

Tight lines

I think the pic looks pretty cool.

Nice fish. Never caught one myself, but I've seen a couple of people pull them out of the forks of the Thames in London...

Nice one.

We have HUGE Gars here in the rivers near me and on Moira Lake.

I saw one swirl at my Muskie bait once that was at least 50" long.

I only saw the back section and thought that it was a giant Northern Pike at first.

I know all the spots where they breed nearby and you can see a hundred of them a day staking out their own open spots in weeds there.

Pretty neat looking fish. Look a bit like dinosaurs to me.
