winter camping - bears?

Recommended Posts

a friend and i are hitting middle shanty lake this week to try for splake. plan is to snowshoe in, set up camp, fish a day, and then out again. bears should be hibernating, right? or should i still be cautious and set up a hang?

also, any info on the fishing in this lake/region would be helpful. it's just west of algonquin.

No worries Man!!

At this time of year, even if a bear would happen to wander out from his hole in the ground ,highly unlikely, that it would happen and, if it did , even more unlikely that you'd have an encounter.

Bears should be hibernating; but other animals such as fishers, linx, wolves, etc. are out and about.

good point! though i think i'd be more worried for my fish than for myself

worried?

all you need to know is that you can out run your friend... :tease:

and a can of wasp spray is better then bear repellent, it squirts up to 20' and you can aim it.

Like its been said....Bears are Fast Asleep.

They "might" wander out for peek a boo, but this time of year they are so larthargic you could probobly kick his butt back down his hole LOL...

Seriously you're in very little danger from a bear encounter.

Common misconception that bears hibernate. They go into a very deep sleep, but it isn't true hibernation. They can rouse during warm spells, but I doubt that the recent few days would have any effect.

Bear spray can is pressurized to squirt far away too.

Howdy!  It just worked out that I have some time off mid - late august. I know it's last minute but I'm hoping to get out for 4 - 5 days with the family for some relaxation and maybe to do a little fishing. Being that it's so late, most of the (well known) provincial parks are full.  Hoping to find somewhere quiet to bring the trailer(within 3-4 hours of Toronto, maybe a bit more if it's worth it) do a little fishing with the kids. Any suggestions? I have a small zodiac, being abl

    • Perth area camping and fishing?

I might have the opportunity to get away in the Perth area for some camping and fishing one weekend late August Any suggestions for on good places to camp and really nice fishing lakes? I’ll be going solo. Prefer camp sites with hydro as I will need to charge my trolling battery.  I’d either be taking my tent trailer and canoe with electric motor or roughing it with a tent and bringing my boat for gas and electric motoring. Both Silver Lake and Sharbot Lake PP’s are all pretty much boo

    • Beat the winter blues.

Hi all, This winter has been and still is a bit on the brutal side. We escaped some of it for 2 weeks on a trip to Antigua. I fish from shore there except for my annual meet up with my good friend Nick who also happens to be the best inshore guide on the island. We spent an afternoon on his raft hitting up different spots, fishing was slow until we went the live bait under a slip bobber route. Got into a bunch of small fish until we hit a channel with current, then BANG...big fish on.

    • I know it's the middle of winter when….

… I start roughing out multiple fish species openers on multiple waters combined with turkey and grouse seasons and adding them to my calendars. I also start to get an idea as to day trips and possible overnighters for fins and/or feathers. This about the time I start to wonder if I should splurge on a fly-in or at least a very remote extended trip. The family summer vacation options. Do I need/want to replace any equipment and even what's "new" that I might want to try.   How about yo
