  2. By Mickey Gilleys standards, the meaning of this phrase is obvious. But to a Brook Trout fisherman, closing time is the last few days of the open season, when both males and females look their best. Males are the real trophys at this time of year with their deep orange polka dotted flanks, hooked jaws, and humped backs, but they were few and far between for my Buds and I this time. So we had to put up with the girls. They too color up nicely in the fall as they look for a mate to spawn. It was far from our best closure in recent years, but despite the high winds and occasional down pour, we did ok while tenting in the middle of Heaven. We had to work hard for our 20 or so fish that we caught over 3 days. Not a lot of pics, but these are the best. We did get a couple of nice males. Lousy shot in the low light, but this was the nicest. Can't wait until May..

  5. So back in March the Feds reopened the NWT to recreational leases and I applied on one of the best lakes near town. I got my lease papers to sign today and filled them in and returned them to the Feds for processing. Next week I will have binding lease in hand and can start the process of going broke building a dock and cabin to spend my free time at. Here's my spot from space. A view towards where the dock will be. Good solid place to bolt the land end of the dock ramp to. A view from the water to where the cabin will be. A closer view. Time to start running up the old credit card this winter.
  6. Anyone have suggestions of shore fishing spots in Kingston (or within a 20 min drive radius)? I've gone to: Brewers Locks (just above Sunbury road) and fish off the little bridge or near the locks on both sides. Normally this is a great spot for tons of panfish like sunfishes and bluegills, but this year there hasnt been much luck. There's tons and tons of minnows there, so they are well fed and not biting. A year ago I caught a 12 pound bowfin, and some okay sized largemouth and crappie, but I havent seen any this year, at all. Dog lake, next to the beach/point, right down to the end of Wellington Street in Battersea. Again great spot for pan fish and a few small large mouth, but nothing was biting this year. I tried to find other spots on Dog Lake but none are friendly for shore fishing (private property, no access, too much fast-full power boats zooming by, etc). Kingston Mills, near the locks, and that section in the back where the little water fall is. Last year I caught some pan fish. This year the only thing I caught was those annoying invasive species (the Goby's). Can anyone recommend any good spots to fish from shore? I'd like to catch a wide variety of fish, so I'm not really too picky.
  7. Hello All, The fishing on the Rideau River has been hot the last couple of days - in sharp contrast to the lacklustre action the previous weeks, smack in the middle of never-ending fronts. This is a short video I filmed on Monday. The largies were stacked on a mid-river wind-swept slop edge. Water depth was approximately 3 to 4 feet and flipping jigs accounted for all fish.
  8. So - its been a while - havent fished a lot and havent had much to post A few years ago we started a new family tradition - around fathers day my brother and I head up North with my Dad for a few days of hanging out, fishing, swapping stories and just hanging out Dads bday is always right around Fathers Day - so its nice My Dad and my Paternal Grandfather are the ones that got us into fishing - and its a great way to hang out With bass opening early this year we were able to multi specis fish a bit - spent the first day casting and trolling for muskie (and wouldnt have turned down a pike) no suck luch - that evening no walleye visited the boat - just a lot of perch Headed out the next day for bass opener - and got quite a few smallies around this size: Hot bait was a Stike King Square Bill - in green Tomato - I was the only one with this colour and it was all they seemed to want Even hooked into this bonus largie My Dad really just wants to hang with us (in his boat lol) and he mainly trolls - threw out a crankbait and caught a bonus walleye right in the slot A while back I posted about our trolling motor - turned out we had a blown fuse - switched it up and its now running like a charm (thanks to all those who had provided input) Few weeks later I was up visiting again - this ytime for a day/night with my little one = it was kids stuff all day but at night grandma offered to get bedtime started while my brother and I headed out for a cigar and a drift within 5 minutes while I was fiddling with lure selection my brother caught this Another nice walleye in the slot - we were only out for a hour and no other walleyes hit the boat- but we put a whooping on the perch - actually got quite a few with some size Anyway - just my little update - fishing downtime until we head into Algonquin for 2 nights on Ragged Lake - ideally catching smallies - will post a report when back Cheers Gordy Edit - couldnt post pics from photobucket - tying attachments so order may not follow the above story - lol
  9. Hey guys, new to the site. I've been out a few times this year and have only caught a few little perch and some sunfish. I've been to lake eugenia, waldemar fishing the grand river and the Orangeville reservoir. I am wondering if you guys know any areas around Orangeville ( 1-1.5 hour drive ) that I could try for some bigger more exciting fish. I dont own a boat so shore fishing is my only option unfortunately. Thanks for the help in advance.
  10. Hey! I was wondering if anyone knows of any GOOD lakes with crown land for camping this summer? I'm not too picky about location but possibly northern ontario area? preferably with good fishing and not a whole lot of other people on the lake as we prefer some peace and quiet, also not too big of a lake as we are going to be using just the canoe this year. I camped on Loom Lake, and Wesltemkoon lake last summer. Both were awesome! Loom lake was nicer in terms of peace and serenity BUT the fishing there was minimal. Westlemkoon certainly had more to explore and better fishing and I'd go there again in a heartbeat if I had a boat with a little motor on it haha. I enjoy "roughing it" I dont want a sissy camp with showers and plumbing and so on. Just crown land, with good fishing. there must be some good places that I have yet to learn of
