  1. Labor day weekend is upon us. This marks the end of the summer and time to pack away the trolling gear. Some of it will come back out in a couple months for walleye when the action really heats up in Quinte.

The salmon action I heard was spectacular this year on Lake O. Guys were hammering them out there all day, everyday. I was only able to get out a few times this summer and although it wasn't the smashing success everyone had, I didn't fare too poorly either. The launch I normally use is Bluffers but due to the construction and high water levels, it was shut down this year. I had to use an alternative, so off to Ashbridges. I didn't fancy the idea of battling it out with crowds and the limited parking, so I think that was my major deterrent this year.

Here was a small video of one of those days on the water this year. We did end up with a double digit day, most the fish coming off of the dipsey divers, about 150 ft back. I stuck around the Spits/Bluffs area.

A few pics to show from the outings. Some inspired by MJL's great shots :worthy:

So as the summer ends, this also means a new opportunity. This is the time when the salmon fishing out on the main lake slows down as the fish stage and move into the river systems to do their thing. This was my first time really trying to cast spoons and cranks for kings in the mouths of rivers. I hear of people and friends going every year, to the piers chucking for them. So this was the year, I tried it, but from my boat. Just out of casting distance from the shore anglers. Parked myself out in 20-30 FOW and went at it. Fish were surfacing everywhere. We were bound to hook up, right?

Still some time left for catching Kings out in the lake before they all shoot up the rivers.

    Thanks for looking.

  2. It's spring and there are a ton of carp in the shallows now. Great opportunity to try out fishing for those large goldfish. Just some corn on a hook will do, they seem to be in quite the feeding mood. We grabbed some random rods and went at it. We even used the same rods later that evening for walleye. Have a gander and enjoy the video.

  3. Better hurry. All photography gear will be increasing in prices very shortly. Henry's put out a statement that starting April 1st, their prices will be increasing 15%+ due to the Canadian dollar.

Depending on your needs, I would look long and hard at mirrorless cameras. They take great photos and videos, at a fraction of the size of a full size dslr.

MJL on the board just jumped on the mirrorless bandwagon. I'll wait for him to chime in :D

  4. Cool video Kevin.

Here are your flaws though ( sorry, they must be pointed out)

    You need a med/hev rod. JMO :whistling::tease:

You want a video of great hook sets and landed fish, you need to pay your cast more. Im sure Mike and Anthony were holding out for a better lunch venue them micky D,s. :w00t::rofl2:

    LOL Always enjoy your videos.

BTW, Whats with the 6" auger Nancy? :o:oops::D

    1. :wallbash:

    2. :wallbash:

3.I don't have the new fuel yet. :wallbash:

I never understood how the sonar works but in this vid I get it.

It's pretty cool watching the laker interested and chasing your lure.

Glad it helps. If you ice fish, you need electronics! Fishing blind isn't the same.

You've got your chase technique figured out. Awesome video. After wading through 2 feet of snow plus another foot of slush underneath, I'm jealous of your nice bare ice :)

Thanks Joeytier... We just got a dumping of snow, so this coming weekend (which is a good chance of being our last) won't be so walker friendly.

  5. Thanks gang. I'll be sure to use a beefier rod and give'r next time. Most of the time I'm using a M or MH, but that day I was using a ML only and that didn't have enough backbone to really set it... No excuses! :wallbash:

Nice Video kelvin, may I know where you were? 2nd line or 6-7th, the sonar you are using is it 999. Did you use the ice transducer or just the one come with the unit? This year I haven't go up for laker and white fish yet, still worry about the ice.

Motojoe - I was on the south shore of Kempenfelt bay. I used a ice transducer for the 999. The ice hasn't been ideal this year but you gotta do what you gotta do!

  6. Cool video and thanks for posting it! Small suggestion, set the hook!!!!!! And I mean rip it so it's sister can feel it!

    HH

I usually do give them a good rip but these times I took it that since they had smacked it pretty hard while I was reeling up, it would suffice...

I believe this past Saturday was February 27. Nice video though.

WOW. Thanks for catching that. I'm a month behind. crap.

@ All Star Wings later that night...

Kevin: "You need to start up a Canadian rod blank manufacturing company to produce Canadian made ice rods"

Mike: "I'll need to hire some pro-staffers to get the word out there"

    Kevin: "You can hire me"

Mike: "I need people who can land lakers..."

    Great vid!

    :wallbash:
  7. Well.. I have for you a video from this past Saturday on Lake Simcoe, ice fishing for lake trout. At the beginning of the day, I hooked up immediately and it looked like it was going to be a stellar day. However, the action for me was all within the first hour. Nevertheless, I got some good footage and was able to get this video up. Have a gander, I especially enjoy the sonar footage :D

  8. I said the same thing. No spuds. Running around. Not a care in the world. Doesn't send a good message to those that are not experienced. Great day fishing that won't soon be forgotten, but a little common sense goes a long way. I was on that same ice the same day and we found at least 5 spots that couldn't be more than 1 1/2". 2" at best. Most was 3-4 but it only takes one step in the wrong place to wreck a day. Just sayin.

    I appreciate your statement.

Caution should always be taken when heading out on the ice, even when it is thicker. You just never know.

  9. Glad you guys liked the video. Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Way better than the crap on WFN. Crazy day, great video, and they all went back down the hole, very cool!

Most went back except for one that took it a bit too deep and into the gills :(

    Great video Guys!

Personally though.. I think your taking a very big risk not chipping your way out with a spud pole on 3" of ice.. IMO.

Not to say I wouldnt fish 3".. I do it all the time. But I chip every step I take. Every step.

Thanks NAW and thanks for the concern. I won't argue that it wasn't risky.

Forecast for the next few days is going to make that sketchy ice even worse!

Agreed. I don't think I will would want to venture out there again this week.

Congrats guys and Great video, That's better than any fishing show on TV and no infomercials. :good:

Looks like you were out from suicide hill

    No Whities to be had?

    Bingo.

    One whitie was iced B)

We saw them come and go but only one committed.

  10. Well this past weekend, it seemed like it was the first opportunity to find some semi decent ice to walk on at Simcoe. So a bunch of us decided to try our hands at landing our first laker of the year. We arrived at around 8am to find ourselves to be not the only fools there. Once we got to a spot in about 90 FOW, before I had a chance to even drill a hole (since I kept walking further), Dru and Mike hooked up back to back to back. This further delayed my fishing time since I ran back to them to film..... This was just the first few minutes of the day. The rest of the day wasn't as stellar but by no means am I complaining about the action, I got a pretty good work out running around filming. Below is a highlight video of the day. Enjoy :)

  11. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad and it is solid. Four years old and after a few drops, it boots up does what I need it to do. The most CPU demanding thing I do on it is video editing. I also have a monitor hooked up to it, that's a check mark off your list.

If you don't mind, there are lots of good deals on refurbished lenovo laptops. This one will handle microsoft word no problem.... https://ca.refurb.io/products/lenovo-thinkpad-t420-laptop-4gb-320gb-i5-2-5ghz?siteID=CAqD7bLWUPI-298_zlIC2J05mQqIm8ye1A
