  1. Lol yes, that was the biggest perch of the day. It was around 12" We caught a few smaller ones in the 9" range. The herring were not super large but we were excited to catch them since it was our first time. It was crazy looking at our Marcum's going nuts when the herring swam by. They showed up twice that day, and were on our radar for about 5 mins each time. The window is small but if it wasn't for the flashers we wouldn't have been able to have our lines at the right depth b/c they were suspending both times they passed by.
  2. Hey Brian, Not my recipe, but I went on youtube to see how they actually pickle herring. Since herring is a fatty fish, it would be great for pickling. Here is the youtube link. The video could have been a bit shorter (lots of cutting, especially onions lol) but its pretty clear and informative. I'm currently in the salting stage. Will be preparing the pickling mixture tonight.
  3. LOL no, it actually was avocado mayo. Double hit of avocado. Wasabi aoli probably would have been a great idea though!
  4. Hey guys, Got a chance to hit the ice yesterday. I'm glad we did, since it was a beautiful day, very little wind, and the sun was out pretty much the whole day. Was able to catch a lot of different sized perch. Ended up catching a couple decent ones. Before we packed up for the day, we stumbled across a school of herring on our flashers and for fortunate enough to land 2 of them. Never caught them before, they are a pretty amazing looking species. Here are a few pics, I enjoyed the perch for lunch today. As for the herring, they are nicely being pickled. (Figured I would research how to prepare them best and this seemed to be a great solution) Happy fishing everyone, dress warm.
  5. Hey guys, Haven't posted in a long time so I thought I would give it another go! Went out to the Bay of Quinte for the weekend in the hunt for some pickerel. Ice was relatively thick in most spots. (just under a foot). On the Friday we got there pretty much for the afternoon fish and didn't get any bites. The Saturday was a bit better. My buddy was able to land the largest fish of the weekend 28" (released). Unfortunately I wasn't able to get on any fish. I only had one bite the whole weekend and I messed up the hookset! lol The funny thing about that was I left the hole to fish another one and my buddy decided to fish that same hole and what do ya know, he catches a 24" 4lber. Overall it was a great experience. First time on the BOQ for me, so maybe it was my initiation trip. Perhaps next time I will fair better. I've included a few photos from our trip. Will continue to post as the ice fishing season progresses. Happy fishing everyone! Be safe and dress warm.
  6. Thanks for the advice! I'll be sure to have the proper gear before I head out the next time. Everyone on this forum is so helpful.
  7. LOL, nah I can't give up. I haven't really devoted much energy into targeting this species, but want to focus more on it now.
  8. Hey guys, I've been away from this forum way too long. Was a member since 2006, and I guess just haven't kept up with it up until now! I've been fishing for over 25 years. The one fresh water fish that eludes me to this day is the infamous Musky. I don't normally target this species, but I've run into the occasional ski, top watering for bass and pike. It seems like every time I have one of these guys on my line, I'm not properly outfitted to bring them in. Either that or I'm just very unlucky/unskilled. I've had a couple decent ones close to the boat, but still unable to land one. At this point in time, I would be overjoyed just to catch a 25"er. I'm normally doing a lot of top water fishing along the weed lines. Only the last couple years have I invested in a more heavy duty stiff rod, with a decent shimano calcutta, 30lb braid, and longer leeders. So my question is, what is the best way to target this species, time of year, time of day? Is there any particular lake that has more of this species? From what I know, Scugog, Chemong, Sturgeon have a pretty good amount of them swimming around. I usually fish the French River once a year. I've had a few there too but still nothing landed. Again, any type of advice is much appreciated. I know its really late in the year, but even if its a next year thing any knowledge is great. Ben
  9. Good job! Anytime out on the water is great! Thanks for the report.
  10. Really? At the French River? We go up there every year. Never came across any Crappie. Are you on the upper or lower?
  11. Tried a couple times at Chemong in the Fall at night last year. Nothing really hitting. Depending on the weather next week, if the winds are in our favour we'll try during the day and look for those deeper weed patches. Nothing like catching a giant slab on an ultra-light! have the i
  12. Maybe it's time to bring up TJ Brennen. Ranger and Gardiner have been really struggling. Its time to shake up the defensive corps a bit to see if that will help settle the D down.
  13. lol I know! I missed the spring fish for crappies this year because I was in Amsterdam for a wedding so hoping to get my fix this fall. Here's hoping the winds don't get too crazy and will be able to get out there.
  14. Thanks for the advice Bill. Going to try and get out to the Kawarthas next weekend. Will have post a report after that
  15. Amazing catches. Thinking of hitting Sturgeon next weekend. Last time we went in the summer it was crazy windy.
