Sometimes the simplest meals are the best meals...

Shucked a couple of dozen Irish Point oysters from PEI. Some freshly grated horseradish along with lemon and hot sauce...but we really don't like to put much on them. A green salad and loaf of crusty bread. Washed it down with a bottle of Moet.

Oh man.. oysters are at their best this time year...

Mmmm, I'd be all over that!

  2. Been a while since I posted here and while I cook/eat every day I don't always take pictures. But I was bragging to my daughter about making Pizza and a Big Ass Calzone from scratch so I took some pictures.  ;)

And here they are, topping/filling are the same for both. ~ Mild Italian Sausage, Yellow Bell Pepper, Onion, Black Olives and plenty of freshly grated Mozz.

Wore a LG hat for about 20 years LOL. Starting getting supplies from him in the late '70's , he was still working out of the basement of his house and a 17 foot  Boston Whaler in the drive

Knowing I'm going off topic, apologies given. I first met Lorne in the summer of 1976 (15 years old) and yes, the basement, the Boston Whaler, all good memories and he still lives in the same house. It's been a few years since I stopped by and said "Hello."

I used to run into Lorne here and there around the province, often on or near steelhead rivers.  A genuine character, that guy!

Oh ya, he was and still is..... lol

So many good laughs in his pick up camper, Meaford usually ..... as I somewhat recall.  😆

I started going to Kipawa in the early 80's. I did a couple of years at Temagami as well when Quebec outlawed live minnows. As you say even though it's a nice lake there was just something missing compared to Kipawa. Plus the OPP had a big brand new boat and were stopping everyone all the time including lodge boats. We would hide out beers in those plastic rod cases lol. That's when I got into salted minnows for Quebec which worked just fine behind gang trolls for Lakers and on a jig for Walleye. Wondering why you would boat in to Mackenzie from Laniel instead of Kipawa? Was Laniel closer to you?

Well the distance into camp smitty55 is about the same I believe from either end but the reason for going in from Laniel access was that the owner of Camp Mackenzie at the time, Jack Newman operated out of Laniel. I believed he and his wife also ran the Post Office there, the parking lot and the boat ramp connected to the parking lot.

  5. I have so many fond memories of fishing Kipawa back to the early 80's until the mid 90's.
I fished out of Camp MacKenzie, sort of lake central just west of Corbeau Island. Some 14 miles in by boat from Laniel.

I have fished Temagami in the last few years and it is indeed a beautiful lake but it somehow does not hold charm that Kipawa does for me.

I was a much younger man then......

  6. So I'm hosting an appreciation event for my customers and friends this Sunday, no I didn't know it was Grey Cup (yawn*) but it does require food for the 40 plus invitees.

Today was an busy afternoon of Chili making. There's approximately 9 pounds of meat in this pot. Taste testing through the afternoon suggests I have a winning pot happiness for my friends.

Pricks. I wonder if they could actually stick a charge that would hold if I just moved the barrier over to left. ;)
I mean seriously, if I carried a canoe or pontoon down the ramp they'd likely do nothing but if I trailer a boat down the ramp I'm now liable for some BS conceived offense. Idiots!

The upside to that photo CM is I now know your pup.  ;)

I'm hoping after this coming weekend I can find a little time for me and my boy to hang around down there.

Geeeez, those were the days.  ;)

Last I was there in late fall to launch (Bronte) they had the ramp blocked off, pricks.

Jr was talking my ear off this morning. He is looking forward to meeting up with ya. Add a build for me and put it on his tab please. LOL

I like that Chris. Nothing stands out but the name. Very nice.

He's potentially coming next week Brian, I'm looking forward meeting the young fella.  ;)
I will show him this message, I'm sure he'll find it funny. Make sure when you after his visit he doesn't hold on you, I'll be sending him back with something for you.  :D

The build as simple as it would seem was a struggle, I'm glad you like it.

  10. I finally managed to finish this build as per the customer's request, transparent acrylic reel seat, butt cap and transparent silk windings.
This was my first time using silk and I can state unequivocally it's one heck of a learning curve. I had to strip the tip section down twice and redo it because of issues I had not counted on, I definitely prefer nylon winding thread.  ;)

Yeah I get it, Okra is not for everyone. My wife and I like it, my kids and grandkids not so much. If they come over, after slicing up the Okra, I'll soak it in vinegar for a few minutes (then rinse)...it removes the "slime" that turns a lot of people off. However, Okra does help thicken (along with the roux) the Gumbo to give it that proper consistency.

Not sure if you've tried "filé powder" in your Gumbo. I use it if Okra is not available. Again, it thickens the Gumbo and gives it that authentic Cajun flavour and texture. I usually pick up a jar when I'm down south, as it's difficult to find in local stores...but I see you can buy it on Amazon.

Yup we eat mussels at least twice a month from October to May...in summer I find they're not as plump and tasty. They're relatively cheap, twice the protein of steak by weight, and low fat...plus you can do them in anything from a coconut milk curry to plain ol' beer...what's not to like..

My apologies if this all sounds too nerdy...but there's two things I geek out about...fishing and food..

    7142910413_800x800.png

Not nerdy at all CM, I'm a foodie and love trying new things whenever and wherever I can. Fellow member here aplumma (Art) has been an on going source for many food related things, both Okra and Gumbo File are things he has brought to my attention. As for Okra, the slime did turn me off, not the taste mind you, just the slime.  ;)

As for the "Gumbo File" I'd honestly forgotten all about since aplumma brought to my attention years ago, not something I've seen on the shelves locally hence my forgetting about it. Where do you source it CM?
