  1. Interesting point about the wind, I hadn't really thought about that part of it! I used to be all about the Carolina rig and Texas rig when I was learning as a kid and I really should go back to it. I never thought long about a bait like the senko working well that way. it was introduced to me 'wacky'. I've fished artificial worms but I'd always liked the results with thinner worms because of the action they get so it just didn't click to me to use the fatter stick bait that way. Also the smaller bass sometimes can't reach the hook on a 5" worm so I thought they'd just tear them in half. I've fished wacky side by side with someone using them weedless texas rigged but I was getting cleaner hook up wacky rigged and just dealing with the weeds and we had the same kind of results. This thread has shown me a few new jig heads and a let me see that people are using them effectively without feeling like an idiot. I dunno about you guys but there's something that makes me feel weird about the senko on the wacky rig. For me, my 'confidence bait' is often a 2.5 or 3" Gulp alive minnow in Black Shad or Smelt on an 1/8 jig head. Nothing beat it in terms of being able to search new smallie waters, hook up with fish of all sizes, and it is more castable on an ultralight. The wacky Senko is on my longer rod usually for follow up casts to targeted fish or if I'm not catching anything I'll target the shore with it or long distance cast to known cover/structure. I guess in a way that makes the Senko the confidence bait, but to me, confidence means I can fish it the same way for anything, anytime, anywhere without worrying about colours or conditions of the day and thats a jig and minnow for me.
  2. I agree. I'm thinking a combination of long days, the temperature changes you mentioned and people not pumping enough water in on long runs with big fish in the wells all day. Those fish are expelling waste into those tanks and if you are doing a long run back without pumping water then the oxygen is gonna be lower. Imagine an aquarium in the size of a toolbox, put it in a greenhouse, cover the top and add 5 more big fish and that's a livewell....Imagine how big a fish tank you'd need to keep a 5lb smallie at home healthy in an aquarium... How many boats pumped before the run back? Or even the most concerned anglers would probably flip it to recirculation and drive back with out stopping
  3. Just thought it would be fun to discuss this again. Senkos catch fish when Yum Dingers do not. The salt impregnating causes them to fall differently, and the fish hit them harder. I change to Yum Dingers after I’ve found the fish and it’s clear they are in the mood. Even then they will catch fewer fish. My favorites are anything brown/green with red fleck, but I always keep ‘nitro tip’ Senkos or chartruse with black fleck around for those sunny bays. I have a friend who swears by the blue and black Senkos but I’ve found that they work best in the 6” size for some reason. Could just be random, I don’t fish enough of them to know for sure. Finally, any other brands that people like? I think there’s a KVD?
  4. Run a search bait like a 1/8oz jig and minnow that will hook up easily and let you figure out structure. Fish through the area and then return with your big plastics 10-30 minutes later 6” senko, fished as slow as possible, target casts to sighted fish or long casts to undisturbed water, this is why you fish through once, so you can return and fish with purpose. I find it’s important to drift in quietly, cast to in new water with a soft plastic. In the summer the bite during the day can slow down, so those bigger senkos will produce more big fish than say a crawfish bait or a tube because are a big soft bodied meal with low risk. Big bass in the summer are not always aggressive because insects and crustacean type food is available so keep those plastics easy to consume. The most recent big bass I’ve seen caught on one of my trips was on a 1” purple twister tail with a tiny 1/16 Oz jig head. It was about 5 inches from a rock beside short in 18 inches of water and was 5.5lbs-6lbs. I was fishing with a friend who was using a stiff cheap bass rod, and bunch of big ‘american’ bass baits, 15lb test. I put him on a 5’6” st croix ultralight with that 1” jig and he caught it. Look at the patterning you’ve done. Chances are between your info and these tips you can find a pattern for next time. Two rods can help a lot, also I use 4lb, 6lb or 8lb mono max OR buy an ultralight rod so that every 4lb bass becomes a 6lb bass. Anything that makes it more likely for a wary fish to feel comfortable. Another tip: more oxygen entering the water, the fish will be more energetic. A spring or river fed bay can be fished more aggressively than a back bay in my experience.
  5. As a meat eater, I don’t care. First of all, the more people who eat this stuff the better. It has the potential to help keep pricing down on meat long term. I look forward to seeing meal worm used in alternative foods so we can sort out the people who are really trying to save the planet :) Secondly, my gf is pescatarian. This stuff just means options, easier negotiating where we eat, easier to make meals at home. If we have to eat at McDonalds on the road, she gets a wrap and removes the chicken. They charge the same amount so if she can actually get food instead of ripped off, that’s a good change. I used to eat meat daily without even thinking about it, but a few years ago I had some health issues that sidelined me for months. Veggies are important to your digestive health and lean protein like fish and chicken is much better for you. A piece of red meat or even pork every week seems like overkill now. I have no issues with people eating meat or soy, but Now I’m careful to make sure the meat is the meal and not an after thought. Ground beef at most restaurants is garbage, chicken as a topping on pasta or pizza I s often a roll of the dice, pork is used cuz it’s cheap. Tilapia is acceptable ‘fish’, it’s darn mushy garbage. Anyway rant over, the most important thing about food is that it’s healthy and you enjoy it and it makes you feel good. It took a trip to the emerg to realize that for me.
  6. I've been using a dual beam Humminbird 160? I think. It's great but my buddy got a Striker 4 and it's much better. We could pick out bait clouds and fish arcs were much higher resolution. If you fish rentals, the Striker 4 is fine and the backtrack GPS lets you hit those drift fish and trolling fish that you find on unfamiliar water. Helix 5 is much better, i've not used it but if if it's your first unit, I would spent 200 bucks more eagerly than 500.
  7. Thank you for sharing. I understand volume is tough to compete with (I own a startup also) so it's great to see things are close to big box pricing. It's the terminal tackle pricing that really hurts at retail and it seems those prices are a bit higher on this site. I typically shop at SAIL or Al Flahrety's so I don't mind a buck or two variance on a bag of plastics or a Rapala but I hate paying the these types of prices on terminal tackle. On that note, some lure making materials would be really great to have a domestic source for.
  8. wow 96, i remember that. i wish they'd go every other day. 18 days to play a 7 game series
  9. i don't mind admitting that i'm just jumping on the bandwagon. it was fun and it is meaningful to the player and the fans and that kind of sports event is always exciting to get involved in. It's great that we play lots of organized basketball in school in Canada, i think it makes it easier for people to pick up the game and get deeper into it as you watch. actually wish the MLS would get rid of the playoffs in North American soccer so the regular season games would matter like in English football. that would get us another entertaining product from MLSE. anyway, great game very entertaining and i'll be on the wagon for Game 1. Gotta say that bringing in Lieweicki for a bit really seemed to kick start things a few years ago for MLSE. He hired Ujiri, Shanahan and Michael Bradley and Sebastian Giovinco on the football side.
  10. don't think these guys know how hyped we get for playoff games? we're not gonna start caring about something else on even remotely the same scale as we do the Leafs. I don't have any problem, I am a 'hockey fan' all year round. That's why I watch a Sunday afternoon Toronto at Carolina game in November so I can see how teams are developing and I enjoy the game. It's entertainment and the playoffs are the best but "Leafs Play-off game" vs any other playoff game is not even the same scale. these guys are the toddlers who had a shirt that just said 'Hockey' or 'Basketball' instead of Potvin and Gilmour. real talk though: Lets go Blues...Bruins have a few Canadians, Blues have many. Also I don't want Marchand to be lickin' Lord Stanley's cup.
  11. I'm the same, I say walleye most of the time, but I think 'oh there's a little picky hanging out by this tree' as I'm taking a cast for one. I grew up saying pickerel and now I say walleye to avoid people in America getting to correct me about something
  12. Hello all, Just wanted to share a great time. I have become a citiot and don't get to fish as much as I'd like any more. I've been able to target bass, pike, perch, walleye, but trout have always eluded me because they are just those little arcs on the bottom at 65ft+ in August. I've had a great time at Bruce's spot on Temagami since I was a kid and there's no place I'd rather fish. After getting a nice 29" northern walleye vertical jigging I turned my attention to trout simply because I'd never caught one wild. I started making sure I had an additional small spring 'trout trip' so I had better odds and although I couldn't get up to Temagami , I tried many Algonquin trips, a Kawartha trip and a few times in North Frontenac. Also tried the fly rod in Huron county. First time in Kawartha, my buddy got into 1 stock rainbow trout. Nothing else was caught. Same friend had a 'possible brook trout' on and lost in Algonquin after waaaay too many years of group trips, nothing else for anyone in the group. He got a couple more small trout in Algonquin at a cottage dock one time. Two years ago, another friend finally got a 4lb laker (which we thought was a splake for ages, and may still have been) at his cottage lake on the last cast of a short weekend trip. It was a random trout on worms after being blown off a 'good spot'. Hardly a scientific plan to match the hatch but we knew we found some fish worth catching. I personally had still never caught a trout outside of a stocked pond after organizing and driving for these trips. We tried again last year with no success due to the wind and some engine worries, finally, this year we would get it right. We managed to boat 3 nice lakers on Saturday evening, losing 2 more at the boat and 2 behind it. I got my first ever wild trout, a beautiful lake trout. I'm horrible at guessing the weight of these trout, but I'd say the smaller ones were 2.5-3.5 lbs and the largest one, I caught on a gold Little Cleo was probably 5-6 lbs. Nothing special compared to what I see on here, but there is nothing like honing your skills, scouting new water, dialing in a pattern, and being rewarded by catching beautiful fish with your pals. I went on my first musky excursion last fall and I'm hooked, so it was great to knock off a bucket list species and find success after arranging trips where others caught fish. I wondered if anyone else had any stories of putting in years for a species and finally getting the reward you were looking for. Keep those rod tips high!
  13. This is the internet equivalent to making your own website to prove your point in a forum. This is 100% biased. Every single article is trying to forward your point on this site. Just imagine what you are proposing. Marine radar is up to 40Ghz, is that no longer safe? https://www.fcc.gov/engineering-technology/electromagnetic-compatibility-division/radio-frequency-safety/faq/rf-safety#block-menu-block-4 WHAT IS NON-IONIZING RADIATION? "Ionization" is a process by which electrons are stripped from atoms and molecules. This process can produce molecular changes that can lead to damage in biological tissue, including effects on DNA, the genetic material of living organisms. This process requires interaction with high levels of electromagnetic energy. Those types of electromagnetic radiation with enough energy to ionize biological material include X-radiation and gamma radiation. Therefore, X-rays and gamma rays are examples of ionizing radiation. The energy levels associated with RF and microwave radiation, on the other hand, are not great enough to cause the ionization of atoms and molecules, and RF energy is, therefore, is a type of non-ionizing radiation. Other types of non-ionizing radiation include visible and infrared light. Often the term "radiation" is used, colloquially, to imply that ionizing radiation (radioactivity), such as that associated with nuclear power plants, is present. Ionizing radiation should not be confused with the lower-energy, non-ionizing radiation with respect to possible biological effects, since the mechanisms of action are quite different. 14. I think South Korea has 35000+ of the new 5G access points so we're gonna find out pretty quick i think. They have 250,000 customer out of the gate and the first phones launch May 10th. For Canada, 4G service makes so much more sense since low frequencies travel further than high frequencies. as such we're likely to be saturating 4G LTE everywhere for a while before 5G mini-cells start replacing them for most usage. In the cities, who knows. I think we're gonna see it at stadiums and malls just because of the performance. I thought it might be good mention that your 5G router is a very likely 5Ghz router which is different than 5G wireless technology. Most home wifi is 802.11ac which is 5Ghz and has been around since about 2013. The routers that use the 5G technology that we are worried about use the 60Ghz spectrum, but have only been around 6-8 months at the consumer level. This is 'WiGig' or 802.11ad. These are available in the 350-500 dollar price range but it's good to keep in mind that 60Ghz wifi won't bi-sect a wall. It's wave form won't penetrate a wall. The 5G devices that might be used could be higher or lower than 60Ghz, I think they are looking at 24-40Ghz stuff but I'm a network guy not a cellular phone expert. To some extent, the answer to getting away from Bell's 5G might be to go inside your house. If you want to cover your brain so it doesn't get hit by 5G radiation, you can very likely use a magazine or your hand, you won't need a tinfoil hat.
  15. You’re gonna be fine. That chart doesn’t separate ‘microwave’ and ‘radio waves’ because it’s all the same. All of this is considered non-ionizing radiation. This means it will only produce thermal resonance in a cell, or change electron valence. Ionizing radiation will destabilize at atom entirely (X-ray, gamma rays, UV rays). The World Health organization 10 years ago ratified the WiGig standard and concluded these spectrums only produce non-ionizing radiation which affects tissue by less than 1 degree C. This means it was impossible to measure any effect. Without knowing to ask for it, you are worried about whether non-ionizing radiation has unknown effects on tissue. This is the same thing Belgium, Florida are suggesting. The answer is you shouldn’t worry about it. You’re afraid of something you don’t understand. (So am I but nothing to do but read about it!) There’s 40 years of MRI, CTs, Xrays, more time than that with radio and radiation. The engineers who make this stuff understand it, test it and bring it to market. Even if there is more research to be done, the fact you jump to some corporate/government scheme because of the information that you’ve presented is just not an effective way to respond. You really think these engineers are building stuff to melt their customers from the inside? Also, be sure to remember that you now desire more government oversight, more interference in the private sector. An article or video without adequate data is just fear mongering. A video of a politician with their mouth moving is the least reputable form of evidence I can imagine. Edited to add, thank you for posting this stuff though. I like the discussion and hopefully I’ll be slightly less dickish in the future.
  16. I find the the ice is only half the battle. Those access roads are often flooding and make it an adventure if you can't ford 18" of water
  17. https://www.pce-instruments.com/us/measuring-instruments/test-meters/gauss-meter-kat_40056.htm this is a link to a gaussmeter if you are worried about this stuff. Make some measurements, then when the telcos install 5G, measure again and sue! If you have a new router it may operate in a similar band already, up to 60Ghz RF is already available at consumer levels, from NetGear, Asus etc. I plan to build a big faraday cage around my underground bunker, this way I’ll be safe from Major League Baseballs spy satellites too.
  18. this was always a heartbreaker. trade the young good players for old guys for years and then watch things like the Kessel trade pan out...Rask for Raycroft...we sleep in a bed we make ourselves.
  19. I just started a business a year ago so I've been thinking a lot about the future and skills needed. I would say that if I were doing a trade or hiring a trade position I would want to add a soft skill. Learn some programming or a bit of robotics engineering theory so you have some flexibility to improve your skills and specialization. Just remember you're not aiming to be a diesel mechanic, you're aiming to have people work for you while you smoke cigars and fish. My 2 cents, good luck!
  20. pretty cool. a friend of mine went to college with Shoemaker...still get a kick out of it even though i don't know these people at all. Good luck to the Jays this year and especially in 2021 I'm thinking!
  21. Breaking story: local man finds unfamiliar compost.
  22. Here's what I would advise: get 14 dollars worth of 20lb big game from Canadian Tire until you know how to cast with reasonable confidence. While you are there pick up a spinning rod with 6-8 lb mono/florocarbon on it and a $10 pack of Berkely Trilene XL or XT depending on what you wanna fish. Learn to use both and spool your own spool. There's nothing you can catch in Ontario you can't catch on 20lb test (or smaller) with a leader if you have good working knowledge of your drag, rod and reel. Get into 50 lb braid and fancy line after you know how to fish with your rod of choice and regular old fishing line that you can get everywhere cheap. One day you'll be fishing and you'll think 'this Berkeley line casts well but i think i could use something stronger/with better strike detection/less stretchy/easier to tie knots with' and then you'll be able to go out and choose line that work the way you fish and not how someone else fishes. Just my 2 cents and these guys could very well save you years of messing with cheap line I'm a 6 lb test walleye and small mouth guy or I run 4lb on an ultralight.
  23. RIP and my condolences to friends and family. such a shame
  24. hahaha yup i didn't say they were fashionable, just functional. i got into some camping/canoing gear a few years ago after doing a few portages and some pieces of gear just stick with ya. I use the water shoes with my hiking boots https://www.scarpa.com/kailash-gtx when back packing. some people use the trail shoe, some sandals, crocs. i like to have boots to deal with mud and carrying a boat and swimming/camping/boating/fishing are perfect for the water shoe. i don't think i could carry a boat over an obstacle in a croc but the watershoes are fine. inow i can see fishing in crocs but i'd want them in realtree or hunters orange so everyone knew they were chosen on their technical merits.
  25. I live on Bloor and this stuff always freaks me out, we were walking to the variety store, meanwhile just down the street...
