My wife and I have, after much deliberation, have decided it's time to get out of down town T.O. and make our way out to the burbs. Our haome has gotten too small for our growing family and I know I can't afford a four bedroom house in the core (nor do I want one there as a matter of fact) We have been looking at properties in the Rouge/Pickering area and continue to do so. I was wondering if any of you have done a similar move and if so, what are your impressions/thoughts/up side/down side of making such a move. I'm very fortunate to have fantastic neighbours in my current home... we watch out for each other, share our skills and successes etc... . Has your experience in moving out of the core and into suburbia been a positive one. Are people generally friendly or as a bed room community, do you very rarely see and associate with your neighbours. I know this sounds like a strange question, but after 20 years of living in the core, I'm looking for some insight/experiences that may help me in my decision making process. Thanks to all for your consideration... HH

Great report, too bad the fish didn't cooperate. That happens and with the weather this year, it's allowed us to fish open water at a time when none of us have been able to do it before... which makes finding the schools of big fish even more difficult. I believe most of the fish have passed the ferry, but that being said, there are still plenty of marks to be seen in Adolphus... I think we have some more learnin to do! BTW - if your planner board is swamped by an wave and decides it wants to be a Dipsey, just give it an open spool of line and allow it to float back up to the surface. Trying to reel in a submerged board is not only difficult, but a pretty good way to lose your board. HH

An old used milk carton can be a very handy thing to have around. I cut a hole in the bottom and you now have a porta potty. Cut a piece of plywood to fit the bottom and you have a very sturdy container to carry your fragile equipment in. HH

In most cases I don't really care, gettin out is ... ah who am I foolin? I don't get "stressed out" but a little disapointed. Now, had I paid big money for either a fly in or a guide and the big skunkeroo rears it's ugly head, I may requie some sedation. HH

That shot of it taking flight is extraordinary! Well done! I couldn't help but thinking, boy it must be hard to cross that ferry and not have a line in the water!!! HH -
Great shots and congrats on the pb's! I noticed in your first pic, the red head/white body Stretch 20 haning outta it's mouth... one of my go to colours for cloudy days on the bay. Congrats again! HH

Great report and pics! Love to see people holding pb's, the smiles say it all! Dipsey's haven't been doing squat for a few weeks now, not sure why, but couldn't catch a cold on one, the last coupla times out. Thanks for the report and I hope you get out again soon! HH

Gary that's disgusting! You live in such a beautiful place, with people who just want their lives and homes to be safe, it disgusts me. I hope the cops find them, that's a lot of loot to try and sell off, I would suspect. If people would just stop buying the stuff, maybe.... My neighbour had his car stolen on Xmas Eve, right in front of his own house... the cops found it 2 days later, imbedded in someone's house, a right off! It's always been there and I don't think it's going to be going away any time soon. HH

Love the video and nice fish as well! just one thing... turn off that darned clicker on your reel when your reeling in... that would get you a quick back hand if I had to listen to that thing all day!!! HH

Back when I was young... about 25 years ago I attended Fanshawe College in London and took a 2 year course call Music Industry Arts -Recording Production. The course is geared to folks who what to make a living in the music industry, they have two studios and the students record each other on a project basis. All students were musicians/artitist. I played Bass. Was in a number of bands in the 80's, including "The Cat's Sass" and "Amsterdam". Toured all around Ontario. As our lead guitarist was also a fish head, we would finish playing at 1:00am, then head to the lake/river and fish all night, sleep all day and do it again. Had a great time when playing North Bay, fishin the docks and catchin pike and stuff. Don't really get a chance to play any more, but still dable and enjoy it! HH

Tightlines has a very good selection of trolling cranks and the people there I've dealt with were friendly and informative. HH

Slowpoke is correct, you don't need a line counter with lead core, but, if you have multiple lead core rods and the line colours are different with each spool of core, your gonna have to remember which rod has which colours on it... and when running more than two lead core rods, it can become a pain. That's why I reccommend a line counter reel for Lead Core as well. HH

I think Mr. Gore has found a way to increase his visibilty south of the border and in turn, set himself up for the up coming election. He may well win the presidential nomination, based largely on the success of this documentary and the fact that the Dem. party will not have to spend as much time, money or energy, getting his name into the public mind. Folks, it's all about winning elections. He's a politian and will do anything to win. Is anyone really surprised by this? Take a look at Stephan Dion's number one topic of interest.... the Environment. It's the hot topic currently and will stay that way until someone else comes up with something else that captures the publics interest. In the mean time... it creates a license to receive votes. HH

I have three goals this year; 1. Catch a Whitie through the ice... never tried it, looks like fun! 2. Catch a Laker through the ice... never tried it, looks like fun! 3. Catch a salmon/trout off a pier in the fall, tried it, only caught smallies! HH

HG, take a hard look at the 47lc. It's a larger capacity reel, which gives you more options for line type and capacity. The Shimano Tekota is a very good reel, but if memory serves me well, they're in the $450.00 range! For that money, you could buy 3 Sealines! HH

Doug knows what he speaks! I missed Xmas Eve, Xmas day and Boxing Day with the virus described. Pouring out of both ends for 24 hours, then 48 hours before I could even look at food! Hey, who needs Jenny Craig with that nasty going around! Gatorade is good, also, there's a product in the drug store called Gastrolyte, that really helped, works just like Gatorade, without the taste! HH

Well, after accepting a reccommendation from a high profile member here, I decided to purchase two Okuma line counter reels this year. Based on price, I thought I was getting a good deal.My standard reel for trolling has been the Diawa Sealine 47lc. It has all the benefits of superior engineering and performance, I've never had a problem with them! Now, I've not personally had a problem with my Okuma's, however, I suggested to a friend of mine, who's a guide, that he consider the Okuma's as he was looking to replace some very old and very much used Sealines. He purchased 4 Okuma's (Convectors) this fall for the Quinte season. To date, two of them do not work anymore! The line guide on both have self destructed and the reels are useless. That being said, I'm sure that they would perform reasonably well, if you are not going to be using them every day, day in, day out. But, if your looking for a line counter reel that will last and last, you simply can't go wrong with the Diawa. As a side note... if I had a complaint about the Sealines, it would be the size of the handles... that's where the Okuma shines... huge handle which gives you excellent leverage when cranking in a dipsey or planner board. My buddy, removed the handles on his busted Okumas, and with some creative drilling and fileing, he's attached the over-size handles on to his Sealines. They work great and do help to remove some of the stress, reeling in in-line planers, dipseys and of course .... fish!

Got out for what will likely be my last kick at open water fishin on the Q, Saturday. Arrived at the ferry at 6:30am and on the water by 7:00am. First fish of the day came within 100 yds of the ferry as we began trolling right from the launch. A nice 5-6 lber to start the day! This fish hit fairly high in the water colum. We decided to try a coupla rods high, but to no avail. It began to snow shortly after and it was another hour, before our second fish came to the boat. It was the only double digit fish of the day, a nice 11 lber. WE ended up boating only 7 for the day, with most being very small by Quinte standards... three were under 2 lbs. (came home with one of the guys for a nice New Years meal!) Lead Core off of boards was the ticket, again. We didn't mark nearly as many fish in the Reach as we did a coupla weeks ago and after making a quick run over to Thompson'sPoint, we found a few more fish there, but I think they were planning their New Years celebrations because they certainly weren't very interested in our precision tunned flashy plastic cranks! (Maybe Santa brought them nicer stuff for Xmas!) Hind sight being 20/20, I think the majority of the fish moving in from the lake have already passed the Picton area, moving further up toward Belleville/Trenton. Had I known that before hand, I would have hit Big Bay! Definately saw Hamilton Steve out there, passed him as he was netting a fish. Thought I saw Tybo, but can't be sure... but it was definately his kind of weather! Izumi was out there was well, saw his trucks at the Ferry launch and had a fairly large Triton pass between us and Steve, think it was Bob, don't know how he did. No ice anywhere on the lower Q yesterday, not even in Picton harbour! Wind unfortunately was a non-factor, could have used a bit more chop! And the snow made for a refreshing change from the way too warm weather we've had this year. Advice for anyone considering chasing eyes, you may want to consider Big Bay/ Trenton area to find better numbers. We didn't see much bait in the Reach at all, and we all know the bigguns stay with their food! HH

Great Shots Terry! Those back lake shots look like a lot of fun! HH

I too have lost a loved one to cancer. My sister passed at 42 from breast cancer, first diagnosed at 30. Gerritt is correct, there is no money in a cure, only in dealing with symptoms. If there was any money in cures, they would be a priority for the phamacutical industry. Just take a look at the common cold... how much money is spent, dealing with symptoms? The world is run, by the all mighty buck! Happy holidays to all! HH

That report was good, gooder and great! (It's a Grinch thing!) Caught some nice perch, met a fellow OFNCer and watched some dingbats get busted! I'd be buying a lottery ticket today if I were you! Thanks for the report! HH

Congrats FnS! That's sweeeeet! HH

Well it's a slow day at the office and a slow day on the board so... I thought I'd start this and see where it goes?! Which OFNCer would you like to fish with in 2007? I'll start.... anyone and everyone! Although I get a feelng that spending a day in a boat with Johnny Bass would be interesting! HH
