That guy was caught on my all time favorite splake bait - a jig and a minnow. When things get slow for me on a I just yo-yo my bait 6 inches off the bottom. The lake that we were fishing that day is shaped like a "pot". It drops off very quickly from shore around the entire circumference of the lake. That fish was taken in about 30 feet of water (which is unusually deep for me). I thought for sure I had foul hooked a fish when I first got him on .... The teeth on him were pretty gnarly and when I asked my buddy to help me get him through the hold the answer was "I am not sticking my hand in there".

Not my biggest through the ice ever but this Splake in the 30 inch range came from a lake that is only about a quarter mile long.

I took a G-Loomis Rod in to a local shop in January. I am still waiting for a replacement as of today. According to the shop the rod has now been backordered for 9 months.

I have fished this lake since the early 90s quite frequently. It is a very clear water lake which is primarily lake trout, walleye and bass. It can be very tough to fish from time to time especially for walleye. When you are headed up there is a good chance that you will get into some lake trout. Often we catch them trolling a shallow in the spring as well as drifting with jigging spoons. If you are looking for numbers of trout (and not size) there are smaller adjacent lakes to portage to that hold trout. There are some very large walleye, bass and trout in the lake.

I have not fished Esser but have fished up river in Ogoki Lake and Kaydon Lake on a number of occasions. The fishing in the areas I have been was excellent. I have no doubt that there are 10 pound walleye in they river. We never caught any that size but there were always lots of fish in the 18 to 22 inch size. The Ogoki River has traditionally been know for its pike fishing and there are some real monsters out there. I would be careful with the water levels on that river. Apperantly they can get really high and ruin a trip.

I have been out with several different outfitters mainly on corporate trips with clients. The best I have found for a trip with lots of fish and professional service is Ryan Hare with "we pound em fishing". I would recommend him very highly.

I have spent a lot of time in the Yukon 15 (15 inch transom) as a good friend of mine has one. He and I fished out of it 10 days straight a couple of years ago without complaint. It has a lot of positives in my view - it is light and pretty stable. 15 horsepower moves it along quickly. Perfect boat for a lot of those smaller lakes up your way. Easy to get into tight spaces. From a negative perspective the gauge of aluminum is pretty light. It was trailered a few times without a transom saver (and a motor on it). That resulted in the transom having to be replaced. If I were to buy one I might consider getting one a bit heavier with thicker aluminum.

I purchased an MDX recently off of ebay for 285 new. Best deal I could get by far. It you are interested you might be best to check there first. Very nice reel - quite light. I have not been able to use it yet though so I can't give you a review. It feels similar to a quantum smoke which is another reel that I really like.

I was taken to Cayo Romano and we had to pass through a locked gate. I dont know if I could get there without the guide to be honest. Once you get past the gate it is about 15 kms to the flats. He told me there are very few bonefish near the resorts on Cayo Coco or Cayo Guillermo. As long as you are a good caster and know how to double haul 8 wt or even a 7 would be fine I am sure. I am not the worlds best fly caster which is why I took a bit heavier rod.

I was in Cuba two weeks ago. We stayed in Cayo Coco. Flats are about 40 minutes by cab away. I contacted a guide through the resort "Abel" who was excellent and inexpensive. There were many bonefish including some real bruisers. I was using a 9wt to help with the wind. Do yourself a favor learn how to double haul well and you will save some frustration. Flies are pretty simple stick to gottchas and crazy charlies and you should be fine. 12lb test leaders.

Solopadler has it right. The portage is about 100 yards and is in good shape. It did get a bit tiring near the end of the week lugging the gas in over the portage mind you.
