  1. Misfish, Thanks for your reply and advice, somewhat familiar with the locations you mentioned and will give it a try. Just to sit on the shore away from the rink and talk, is well worth it.

Old Ironmaker, Agree 100% on that! Hope you have better luck with the newborn, she might surprise you.

  2. Used to fish this area for spring perch many years ago but never fished it in the fall. Taking my grandson to Orillia for hockey tournament early November, thought I might give it a try between games but have no idea if there is any worthwhile fishing at that time. I was wondering if anyone has been there in the fall, and where to try. No boat, fishing from shore. Thanks

  3. Does anyone know if we can fish for perch at Fifty, or has it been stopped because of the boats? There is usually a tournament in the spring from what I've heard.

Also, how can I find out when the ponds are stocked? thanks

  4. Have never been ice fishing on this lake but fished there quite a number of years ago. The lake is known for walleye and pike, (some bass and perch) and we have caught large numbers of walleye back in the day. Don't know where you are thinking of staying but we used to fish the north-east end mostly. There are a couple of points there that used to produce very well. There was a camp at the end of Tomiko Rd. ran by a guy named Benny (probably gone now) but people used to stay there and said the fishing was also good right off the camp. Don't know if this helps much making your decision but it's all I can tell you. Good luck.

  5. I can top that one, I think. While stream fishing for speckles just north of Sturgeon Falls a few years ago. lost my last Mepps on a snag. Heading back to the canoe found an old campfire with some tin foil left behind. Wrapped the tin foil, along with two split shot, around the shank of two hooks, a few casts later, a two lb spec. and lost my foil. No one believed me when I got back to camp, but.....true story.

  6. I guess my name should be "Old School" as I have trouble trying to understand all these new lines. I have used Stren or Trilene in whatever strength I needed for many years and never had any problems with abrasion or knots coming out or the line snapping for no apparent reason. I've fished a lot of really crappy waters with rocks, logs, stumps, weeds, in all kinds of weather and cannot remember my lines letting go.

It's really interesting reading all the posts regarding new types of line and I'm sure all you guys have your favorites for different conditions, but I sometimes wonder how much of this is marketing, or are these new lines actually much better than the old stuff.

    Well, just my opinion.

  7. Does anyone know where I can buy some of these? I tried several outdoor stores online but couldn't find anything. (maybe using the wrong search terms) These are used to inflate worms for those who may not know what I'm talking about, usually in the form of a small plastic bottle with a needle attached.

  8. I've been trying to find flourescent monofilament but no stores seem to have it. The one I need to replace is lime green. I used this line for fishing below the lights on dams and it worked great for visibility. Most of the lines I have seen are clear although they advertise as clear/blue. I always used Stren or Trilene, maybe they don't make it anymore? Thanks

  9. Just wondering if anyone has ever fished the Glen Haffy Conservation Area north of Toronto. There are trout ponds there I thought I might take the grandkids to but I have heard conflicting reports from local guys. I know there is a cost to fishing there but I was more interested in opinions of the quality of the facility and how the fishing is this time of year.

    Thanks

  10. So its well documented that at night, many walleye move shallow (like 3ft). Just wondering what is the technique to target them at night. At 3ft they must be in thick weed and such....what is a good presentation?

Long line a 13S floating rapala with 1/4 rubber core 3 ft ahead. Doesn't hurt if you bump the bottom once in a while either.
  11. hi all just need help trying to pick out a new boat. been look at lund, legend, tracker, prince craft, too many to chose from. any recommendations. any good or bad boats. I have heard about hull cracking.

on jan 2014 we r going to Toronto boat show to pick out a new boat just need a little help thanks pyro aka mike

Sylvan makes some good products as well, Pro Fisherman is my fav.

kickingfrog makes some good points, always consider your priorities.

I've had two boats, both based on price, turned out to be junk. Just my opinion.

  12. If you try Caledonia some time, I think it would be best to fish at the river below the dam there. If you use jigs tipped with worms, or a simple worm, splitshot and hook, you can catch your usual white bass, bullhead, channel cat, smallmouth, and walleye, but there are also a ton of bowfin (also called dogfish as a slang name), they are amazing fighters and look really cool close up. They are one of the few fish classified as a living fossil. Dogfish also love a big worm on a hook, and they hang out right around all those bullrushes below the dam, but I know people also catch them right in the rapids where the water pours down off of the dam.

Very interesting! I used to fish the old dam at Caledonia quite a bit. Wade out, use lead head jigs, minnow type baits, caught quite a few walleys. I live in the Hammer and when quite young we used fish in some areas at the bottom of Woodward Ave. and caught bowfins there. Never knew what they were and were kind of weird looking. Someone at that time told us they were members of the shark family.

Anyhow, I have not fished the "new" dam and will have to give it a try before the year's end. Thanks for all the info.

  13. Thanks guys for all the input. I remember that Dover, Maitland, Pt. Abino and those spots were good for perch in the spring just like Atherley and Couchiching but I thought there might just be a little action this time of year. Was on the Grand on the 13th, caught a few silvers and one walleye. Talked to a guy who had been at Maitland earlier in the day, nada. Might try a few spots above the dam at Caledonia or drive down to Jordan. The suggestion from the Old Ironmaker sounds good, never tried that area in the fall, will mark it on my calendar.

  14. Looks like you had a great time. Used to be one of my favourite spots. Used to leave work after night shift and spend the whole day trying different areas. Mostly caught silver bass although I remember being surprised once by reeling in two gar-pike in 30 minutes. Yeah, a couple dozen worms, maybe a pail of crayfish would keep a guy going most of the day. Might go out this week and see if some of the old haunts are still accessible.
