  1. Hi, I have a question regarding trolling motor plugs. I think I know the answer but just want to confirm. i am replacing a fortrex 80 lb 24v with a terrova ipilot 80lb 24v. Both motors draw 56amps. I have 60 amp breakers installed and use 6 ga wires. Can I simply use the old plug on the new terrova? thanks pete

  3. Hi I’m close to buying a used merc 150 pro xs 2 stroke. Does anyone have experience with this motor. I’ve researched everything online and it sounds reliable and performance shouldn’t be an issue. The main thing I’m wondering is fuel economy. Im not a speed demon and won’t run WOT too often. Will it be a pig? Thx
  4. I had a complete tear of acl with some cartilage damage at age 25. my knee was repaired and 20yrs later i would say I have 90-95% normal usage without a knee brace. I have a custom brace and do wear it when playing hockey or snowboarding/skiing for peace of mind. But any pick up games I don’t wear it. my advice is intense physio. Build up the muscles that support your knee!! after my surgery I walked after about a week with a splint but it was painful and any twisting or lateral movement was excruciating.. i took a year off sports to rehab and that was the best decision I made. standing/walking on unstable ground such as ice will put a lot strain on the knee. It might be to early from surgery to risk it??? regardless my surgery allowed me to do all the physical activities I enjoy. BUT I got to this point because of rehab and taking it easy the first little while. ihope you have a speedy recovery!
  5. I was on the record cat trip last year and all I can say is Pete is a true pro. my buddy and I had a fantastic time, we learned a lot and that trip was one of the highlights of 2015. Thanks again Pete
  6. my first exposure to beads was meeting a guy on the river. After looked at his rig and the way he ripped his rod sideways to set the hook, I immediately thought he was trying to snag fish. I politely asked what technique he is using as it appears it is snagging. The fellow showed me the rig and explained it was a west coast technique (where he is from). I ended up fishing with him for the next two hours and was schooled 7-2 (beads vs roe). All of his fish were hooked in the top of the mouth. I would not have believed this if i did not see it with my own eyes. He also mentioned a CO approached him a few years ago, asking why he was snagging fish? The CO ended up observing his technique and considered it legit.
  7. Thanks guys. I have been known to cook a little. lol.
  8. Hi Thought I would share my quinte trip. It started by visiting the local tackle shop and speaking with the owner. Very nice fella who recommended using worm harnesses with huge Colorado blades (1 1/2 - 2 inch wide). I was a little apprehensive as my go to lure is the earie dearie, anyway we bought 2 of them and some worms. Sure glad we took his advice as 10 of the 12 walleye we landed came on these harnesses. Any way we managed our limit and more. Good times for sure and an awesome feed! Thanks for reading.
  9. thanks for the input. I will take it apart and poke around but will most likely buy a new one. sinker, ive seen the pedal in lebarens catalogue. cheers
  10. HI Looking for advice for my electric motor. During the first outing of the year, I plug in the trolling motor and discover the variable speed does not work. The motor will turn on and off, turn left or right but is stuck on one speed (about 30-40% of full power). The battery was fully charged as well. Has anyone experienced this? I'm hoping it's a simple fix rather than buying a new foot control. Any info is appreciated. As for the fishing, a few hammer handles and a couple pigs of OOS smallies (at least 4lbs). All released for another day. Thanks .
  11. Haha. i just realized your location. Asian markets will be tough to find. The marinade can be used on steak (sirloin, flank, striploin, ribeye) as well. Just make sure the steak is not too thick as the sugar in the marinade will burn before the meat is cooked. High heat is needed.
  12. Agreed 100%. Low and slow is the key (4-6hrs on the grill) One of the best bbq books I have come across is written by "Chef Paul Kirk - the BBQ Baron". Very informative describing different regional flavours and techniques with a ton of recipes. A must have IMO. If you try korean bbq all you need is: soya, garlic, ginger, sugar, sesame oil and green onion. Add enough soya just to moisten the meat. You do not want them swimming in soya or they will be salty. Rough chop all other ingredients. Add enough sugar (more than you think) until you have a sweet/salty/teriyaki flavour. Sorry I do not measure. Marinate over night or min. 4 hrs. The ribs are sold as "miami ribs", "L.A. cut ribs" or "galbi ribs". Alot of local butchers can get them or go to an asian market.
  13. Hello I'm thinking about booking a 3-4 day trip in mid-July to Chaudiere Lodge on the upper French river. From my research I have heard it is a great place with great food. I will be going with a buddy and 3 kids (5 and 6 yrs olds). I'm not too concerned with the accomodations but more so with the fishing. I hear fishing can be tough at times but also fantastic. We would mainly focus on walleye, bass and pike to keep the little guys busy. Anyone with info on this area would be greatly appreciated. Cheers Pete
  14. Got out perching for the first time....ever......last saturday. We found 7-8" of solid black ice. Lots of people out with sleds and four wheelers. At the first spot we used a large spoon to attact some fish. Managed a few good eaters with lots of dinks. After a couple hrs my buddy goes for a trek and finds his friend about 200 yds away and comes back with a huge jumbo and asks if I want to move spots......Lets go I say. We quickly tear down, and set up in the new location. For the rest of the day it was ON! It was so much fun watching the jumbo's cruise in and eat the bait! Between four of us we managed a few dozen HUGE perch plus a bonus pike (tons of dinks to weed through). The pike was caught by accident as my friend unhooked a dink perch and tossed his spoon back down the hole. As the bait dangles about 1ft under the ice, the pike smashes the spoon. Anyhow my PB perch was 12.5".......Good times and very good eats! My best bait was a small green buckshot spoon tipped with a 2-3" minnow. I pretty much used this all day. Thanks for reading.
  15. Wow, great trip! I hope to get back again next year as well.
  16. Agreed! Take the time to brine it overnight and you will have a moist bird. I make my brine a little less salty than most to prevent the pan gravy becoming too salty. I place the turkey in a 20L pail frozen and cover it with brine and leave it in the garage overnight (covered). By the morning it is still very cold but thawed. Pat dry, rub sage, thyme and butter under the skin and cook at 300 F. Turn up the heat the last 30 min to crisp skin.
  17. Truly amazing.......I also really enjoy your writing/story telling. Some magazine editor should read your reports. Lol.
  18. I have never done the cedar plank so i will not comment. However, when i grill a rich tasting fish like salmon/trout i usually season with salt/pepper and olive oil and simply cook it. I like using a vinaigrette as a sauce. The acidity cuts the fattiness of the trout nicely. If you google "lemon vinaigrette". you will get a ton of recipes. Just add some fresh herbs (parsley, chive, tarragon, or dill) and some capers and you're good to go. Also, I always use the zest of any citrus as it gives a ton of flavour.
  19. Thanks for the replys! The trip was truly amazing for us. As for the walleye meal, I usually make my own beer batter with a 50\50 mix of flour and corn starch (crispier) with a bit of baking powder. On this trip we brought waffle batter (makes a crispy batter) and added what ever dry spices we felt like ie: garlic powder, dill, onion powder, paprika, lawry's salt etc...............we just added sauteed onions and mushrooms on top of the baseball sirloins. The first night we boiled a bunch of potatoes for the week and used them as needed. These potatoes were actually fried in sausage fat reserved from breakfast......very tasty but I could feel my arteries clogging!
  20. Yes, I read your report penciled on the wall of the cabin!
  21. Last winter I send an email to a buddy asking if he would be interested in a fly in outpost (fully expecting an "no"). To my delight he responds "I've always wanted to do one, let's do it!". Great, I start my research and discover the overwhelming options available. I need advise from someone experienced in these trips. A HUGE thanks to Mike B for steering me in the right direction. On his recommendation we decide on the Chapleau Region. So, we decide to drive up to Wawa Friday and spend the night in order to be fresh for our Saturday flight. We stayed at the Wawa Motor Inn, a clean place, friendly staff and good restaurant. With dreams of spectacular fishing I didn't get the sleep I wanted. I should have just driven through the night, LOL. We arrive at the air base in Hawk Junction and speak with a couple groups coming out. Reports of "ok" and "slow" fishing due to warm, sunny weather start to play with our minds. Anyhow, we load the plane off we go. I have to admit the take off and landing was smoother than any commercial plane I've been on. We arrive at camp and meet the group going out, and with reports of excellent fishing out spirits are now on overdrive. Funny thing is this group were the first Canadians we met doing a fly in trip, the rest were Americans. We quickly set up camp, rig the rods and prep the boats. On the water at 2pm. While waiting for the other boat to get ready, I blindly cast a spoon in front of camp and on the 5th cast land a small pike. Good sign of things to come. We head for a cluster of islands and find a nice drop off. First cast, fish on! It was literally fish every cast. These walleye hit very light, just a tap-tap or some weight, set the hook, fish on! We managed to find fish pretty much everywhere! The bait of choice was a white or pink jig and twister tipped with a worm. My best grub was a motor oil with rainbow fleck that produced big time! Unfortuneately I only had 5 grubs. When thinking walleye fishing you would think early morning or evening as the best times. We found 9am-2pm were the best times regardless of weather. We have wind, calm blue bird scorchers and rain. One interesting point is the lunar cycle indicated 11am would be the best time. I do not think about the lunar cycle much but now will have to do some research. We did not target pike too often but a few nice ones were landed. These pike were very aggressive as they grabbed walleye while reeling in on several occasions. One time, my buddy had a small walleye dangling over the side of the boat for a moment. A pike launched completely out of the water and grabbed the walleye in mid air and took it down. We managed to land both! There was nothing like fresh walleye for dinner each night We had an awesome trip! Incredible numbers and quality of fish. Thanks for reading.
