  1. Sister in law scored two of these for me the other night in Costco. Based on price I told her to just buy them as they came c/w spring shock tow bar, cover and to my surprise when she dropped them off they even have UHMW strips already installed. Bought for less than the price of just the tow bar and cover generally sell for!

New Napoleon wood stove at camp, at the time, that I finally figured out has to have the first layer placed door to back in 12" logs and then the next layer across it or it won't get the air flow to burn based on the design (that I've since had many "heated" discussions with the designer about, as he was my secretary for our airplane club and works at Napoleon). Lights fine with a bit of crumpled paper and a piece of cardboard.. now that we have it figured out!
  4. Went without the press for way tooooo long. Got lucky and caught the last one in stock during a PA 1/2 price sale this Spring. Offer is always there.. if anyone needs something pressed in place.. PM me. Been priceless as I do the full restoration on my '69 Bee. Handy for "reality work" as well ! lol
  5. I don't need to go anywhere Dave.. .. but I hear what you are saying. A lot of "back yard" guys wouldn't have 6 roller cabinets full of tools and a 30 ton press. Always here if someone needs a hand..

  7. As noted.. I said they're not serviceable, just replaceable in our current throw away society. Sounded like you wanted to just replace something that wasn't "crying out" yet. While they had your hub off.. did they check your vacuum actuator for 4 x 4. Just replaced my drivers side on my '11 as it wouldn't retract fully to stay in 4 x 2. $200 for the part.. 3.5 hours labour to replace. Cheap hub is $200.. better one is $340, so you got tagged for about 3 hours labour to change it by the book. I generally do a hub in about 1.5. I've done over a dozen on Fords, Jeeps and Trailblazers.

  9. I still can't quote here.. but as to wormdunkers post. Anyone that is burning wood should be selecting fan "on" (vs auto) on their furnace controller so that the circulation fan stays on and filters the air throughout the house. Also allows you to use your humidifier...
  10. Don't worry about an HRV pics. They can even cause a bigger problem and create a negative pressure in the house if not set up correctly and create a down draft in your cold chimneys and when your fire starts to go out they can create a carbon monoxide situation in your house. Why an external air input feed to the fireplace is essential in newer (20+ year now) homes. Even with same... I sometimes have to crack a basement window to get an updraft on fire start when it's colder than -25C. Other causes of chimney downdraft are gas / oil fired furnaces and water heaters that don't have an external air source in HRV equipped homes.
  11. huzz.. close the damn damper!! Get a light out and look up the flue, you'll find a lever to close the metal flapper. Just remember to open it before you light a fire. This style of fireplace worked for centuries and still do!
  12. Hate to blow "smoke" into anyone's theory, but last week I finally made it to the top of my 40' fireplace chimneys to have a look down them.. with a 10 million candle power light. After 21 years... never been cleaned.. 4 bush cords a year +/- of burning nothing but Oak, maple and the odd birch in our fireplaces and we have ZERO build up and as I said they have never been cleaned. The very odd creosote " release log" throw in for chimney cleaning but that's it. The secret... have a well designed fireplace and don't burn green wood or anything close to same. Soft wood has no place in a Southern fireplace, but no choice sometimes as we go further North. Dry your wood for 2 years minimum and keep it top covered while drying. Burn your fires hot with no fear that you're getting low on wood. DO NOT let a fire smolder while you try to get it started, or by starving an overnight fire for air hoping the "night logs" will last until morning. We're all of an age we're getting up at 4 am to pee, so get up and stoke the fire again or nudge the wife that you're cold and she can do it. That said I did have chimney fires in our previous house with a wood stove, with the typical old air dampers on the front.. a "Johnson Converter". Almost burned my house down with the same wood "mythology" so a lot of the chimney cleanliness comes from proper unit design. Another important issue with lack of creosote is internal house insulated chimneys vs ones that immediately poke through the wall and are total outside in the elements. They cause immediate cooling of the exhausting smoke and coat in creosote. All my chimneys are boxed in and kept warm by the house, which is a 1000% + on keeping them clean. As for the proper length to cut wood.. my great great great grandfather just limbed the tree and feed it in!
  13. Say what... on todays POS hub design there is no reason to do the wheel bearings before the hub fails (and they will). Todays terrible design is unserviceable, with two bearing way too close together to take the torque load they are supposed to. I've replaced countless hubs on family vehicles in the past years, yet my '69 Bee still has it's original bearings in place for 47 years and they will be going back cleaned and repacked during the restoration this winter.
  14. It's actually good to get the ABS pulsing IMHO. I feel it keeps lazy caliper pistons from seizing. Light stop and go you may not even be using all 4 brakes, it may only be the one that extends the easiest and then the lazy ones seize. And Ketch.. thanks for the laugh. Leah worked for Manzone in Oro / gasoline alley when she was about 16/17. His idea of a "tune up" was to take an old ladies 440 Newport for a full throttle boot to Orillia and back !
  15. If your sliders are seized then you'll only wear one side of the brake pads and rotors are probably toast. If they are really seized you may brake hard and go out of control. The rotors of today are throw aways anyhow. Quickly hitting partsmonkey.. pads and rotors + some guide pin parts adds up to $630 and possibly another 80 bucks or so if you need all the rubber boots etc. Shop rate is at or near $100 an hour and I'd say at least 4 hours there if your caliper pistons aren't seized. If they are, you're into more $'s for parts and labour. One reason for calipers and such seizing is nobody really hits the brakes anymore and junk steel. I've always told my kids to get out on the road from time to time, look in the mirror and jam the pedal through the floor for a full lock up. It keeps things working and from seizing into the "groves" of light city driving.

  17. Yes I have stayed at the WIndjammer twice in my life.. no I haven't done any fishing there. Don't remember any unique spots at the beach of the resort, other than a nice sand beach and good drink service. Lots of places on the island though to toss a line..

Thanks Jimmer... will try to get my wife's pictures of her Grandfather as a cook in WW1 and then in WWII he hid Canadian soldiers in his lumber yard rafters( in Holland) from the Nazi's and Leah's then 4 year old father would take them out food in his bloomers right in front of the Germans. For now here is my brother shortly after the Gulf War. Served 20 years in CANFOR with over a decade as squadron commander on the Herc's out of Trenton.
  19. You'd think they'd get it right after 10 model years. Effects '04 to '12 apparently. I'll be fixing it myself, hopefully not needing the "vacuum clutch" but if so I've found it for $125US for the one side that's acting up. I thought my hub had failed and then realized it wasn't a ball bearing sound but a gear mesh grind like my sister trying to drive standard. Scary part is you can't hear it if windows are up and radio is on at any volume. Thankfully I had the window down heading for the gate.
  20. At least you have 2 wheel drive! I'm running my F150 in 4Hi right now thanks to Fords wonderful vacuum actuated hub engagement... that won't fully disengage for 2 wheel drive and it makes that expensive grinding sound....
  21. Yep.. good old antenna.. but of the digital kind today. When Jen was in Mt Sinai, for weeks at a time, we just carried in her little flat screen and stuck an antenna in her room window. Pinged off probably 35 channels from the CN tower!

  23. Cracking is a good thing.... 10 inches of ice... I can pull my loaded 20' enclosed with my F150 on less ice!
