  1. no weights, i believe its the slow fall to the bottom that triggers the fish, while falling it wiggles, so slower the better I'd say.

I've been using circle hooks, and I used a hook like in that picture, it worked fine too. They just cant be too small is the main thing really.

Alright...sounds easy enough. I've got some worm hooks (like the one in the pic) that are big, but hopefully they'll work. If not I'll just switch up to a circle hook. I think this is my last question (not sure if there's much else I could realistically ask), but were you doing a slow, steady retrieve, or jigging it or what?

    Thanks again!

  2. She hit on a 1/16oz yellow jig head with a yellow mister twister tail... weighed in just over 5 lbs, fish feels heavier that that by far but either way she is in the freezer waiting to be mounted on the wall

Awesome! She definitely looks bigger than 5lb, but looks can be deceiving, I suppose. I caught a 7lb-er at the end of last August (largie) but my parents just kinda laughed at me when I said I wanted to get it mounted. My family ate it without me while I was at university, so I didn't even get to taste it. To boot, my friend lost the pictures...so I only have my few friends and myself who saw it....it was a beast though!

  3. Thanks for the info! Also, if you don't mind me asking, did you just use a worm hook, or did you throw on some weights too (if so, just regular old round ones...or?). Like I said, I'm not at all familiar with fishing anything that's not live, so forgive me if some of my questions seem a little basic.

  4. I don't think theres any bad ones, just scent is different. I had a pack of pumkinseed colored "wave worms" and they worked excellent, but lost them all from fish flinging them off while jumping and headshakes. And today I bought a pack of YUM, 12 pack for $5. We got about 20 small largemouth with them today.

And, I think fishing with real frogs is illegal now a days?

Alright...sounds like a plan...but what's this wacky style rigging? Does anyone have a link or an explanation?

As for the frogs...I only fish with them if I catch any where I'm fishing (which is usually at the cottage). I've never, ever seen them sold as bait, but like I said..they make DAMN GOOD bait!

  5. Wow...those are some beauties! Wish I had that kind of action anywhere near me at home!

If someone doesn't mind explaining, what's this 'wacky style' rigging for the Senko and what Senko (if there are different kinds) would you guys suggest? I've only just started getting into fishing with non-live bait, so I'm kind of clueless when it comes to this stuff.

PS - I love fishing with frogs, but the real thing. They are as far as I'm concerned the best bait there is, bar none.

  6. I get out usually once a week in the evening after the kids are in bed. I hit the Grand in Kitchener and I did well tonight. I was in the river at 7:45 and I caught 5 Smallies before 9:00, the biggest was 17". What a blast, I even saw a doe and two fawns walking along the river! Well worth the mosquito bites and brushes with Stinging Nettle.

    Paul

Wow...that's awesome...I was out on the grand (and also for a bit on some nearby ponds) from about 4-8:30pm and not much seemed to be biting. Got a few small ones, but those were few and far between (and mostly from the pond). We saw a lot of carp, but couldn't get them to bite. Seems like Victor and I are gonna have to head out to the Kitchener Grand next time, because in Waterloo it's just not cutting it. Any publically accesible areas you would suggest (just in general..I don't need exact spots).

when i was 17 we used to camp alot and one drunken night we decided to cast from our beer chairs and we had the best fishing in years. Every since then I have fished night time as much as possible. Going camping next weekend and will do some ngiht fishing for sure.

    Cheers!

Night fishing is amazing! Everytime I'm up at the cottage I make a point of night fishing. The view (the sky full of stars and the lake lit with the candlelight-like lights of the cottages across the lake) is amazing, and the sounds of nature and water are awesome too! It definitely doesn't hurt that there are some MONSTER fish to be had at night...it just takes getting used to fishing with no sight. The bugs are a pain and the bats always go after my line/rod.

  7. Wow...sounds like a great time (and a beautiful location as well)! That pike's a beauty...you've taught him well! It's too bad he didn't get a picture with the fish, but he's still young so I predict many more years and many more beautiful fish!

  8. Sounds like a plan! I've never targeted carp specifically (don't have the tackle for it) although I've had one or two hooked before. Depending on the size of the fish and what kind of fish I practice C&R, but I do LOVE to eat fish and so if the fish is a good size I will often keep it. I've very rarely had the 'problem' of catching so many big ones that I need to start letting them go.

Also, I am looking forward to these fights because you make them sound pretty good. Someone will have to help me with getting the right tackle though because I only have a slight idea of what to buy.

PS - I'm living at UWP. Let me know if you guys have anything planned soon or if you'd like to get something going, because I'd love to!

  9. Thanks for the advice Mark! As you'll see I edited my first post to include a little more info...but if I've missed anything or if anyone has any questions for me, don't hesitate to let me know!

Victor, I'm in 1B Mechanical Engineering. Civ is stream 8 so I take it you're at school now as well! We should plan some outings! Also, are you living in rez or off-campus?

  10. Hey Everyone!

I stumbled across this forum this past weekend while doing some searching on the web and have been following it a bit since. I'm not from the K/W region (Richmond Hill is where I hail from) but I'm here for university. I don't normally have a car with me either, but I have one for the time being.

I was wondering if anyone has any spots they'd recommend for me to try fishing from (needs to be foot accessible as I do not have any kind of watercraft. As well, I'd love to possibly meet some fishing partners in the area (there seems to be quite a few of you judging on various other posts on here). You can either post on here or email/message me.

If anyone is up for either some early morning fishing before work/school this week or some evening fishing after the aforementioned time-sinks, let me know!

    Thanks!

Edit in response to Mark's post:

As far as fishing goes, I'm open to anything. I've never been fishing for trout, salmon or musky specifically and would definitely love to give it a try (particularly musky!). I'm also a 'newbie' when it comes to almost anything that's not live bait. I use spinners and spoons a fair bit, but otherwise I'm pretty clueless, but would definitely love to learn more about all the stuff out there.

I've done a lot of fishing up on Beaver Lake in the Greater Napanee area and have caught a ton of pike and both large and smallmouth bass there (as well as the odd trout, pickerel, and catfish). I also usually take a few day trips out to Rice Lake and rent a boat but have never managed to bring in a musky or walleye. As well, I've fished the Bay of Quinte area a bit when I was younger as we used to go camping in that area but I was too young to really have a good grasp on things. As we used to camp a lot, I've fished various lakes and rivers around the province but nothing to a large extent.

I love fishing and I LOVE a good fight. It's been too long since a fish has really given me the kinda fight I'm looking for. At the end of last summer I caught a 7lb+ a few ounces (crappy scale) largemouth on Beaver Lake and that's probably the most notable fish of my career.

Any advice, tips and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
