  1. hello guys.

just rebuild the motor, 2scl, 3 cilinder.

motor has oil pamp already. i was told the first fill up or so, to mix the gas as well, 50:1 ratio. now every time the motor is cold, after 2-5 minutes, one of the cylinders blows the spark plug. i change 3 already in 2 days.

can some one confirm that incorect mixture can cause this problem? i asume, mixture at the moment is 25:1, due to pamp mixing 50:1 and gas tank is also mixed 50:1.

    thanks again

  2. good morning! new poster here, but i have been following your forum for a few weeks. great community you guys have here, very friendly and informative.

i will be heading up to the French River staying at Cranes Lochaven Lodge on 5/27- 6/4. from what i can tell the river is up about 1.5 meters over historical norms.

the last time i fishe dup there was the same week in '05 and the river was just slightly lower than normal.

we had tons of walleye fishing at night casting stickbaits to points and jig and minnows on weed edges.

i am curious how you guys think the higher water will impact our fishing. i presume the fish will be in basically the same type of post spawn spots as normal and its just a matter of finding the right combination of depth and sturcture that teh bait and walleye are relating to.

how about the northern pike? will they be doing anything differently because of the higher water?

any thoughts or opinions are very welcome and i appreciate your help in this thread and all the others that i have read along with.

    Brian

fishing french river, we had almost zero luck last year. i think we went for muskie opener if not mistaken. water levels been lower by 3 feet or so. none of the fishermen catch anything in those 3-4 days we stayed there. i guess one of those lousy weeks for fishing.

i hope you have luck and something to show when you come back. i really liked the nature along the river. would love to come back again. but not sure if its worth it after last trip$$$

  3. hello guys.

i have a NISSAN NS90A 90hp outboard. to make the story short, i bought a lemon last year. had to rebuilt 3 cyls. now when everything looks in order, timing needs adjusting. somewhere, its off. motor works on high rpms (1500) when on chock. on idle, should work at around 900rpm. as soon as chock is off, motor slowly drops rpms, and shuts off. i bought the book, but steps look confusing to someone with limited knowledge.

can someone guide me in the right direction, or the right person to go to? in a perfect world, somewhere in etobicoke. there is oficial dealer in oakville, but i wont take the boat there even if it was last place on earth. boat was there twice last year, for countless labour hours, and a few atempts to sell parts i do not need. also, called to mercury dealer, but they do not touch anything but mercury.

there has to be someone with skill set to adjust timing, i just dont know him yet. please give me advice where to go. how long it can take? maybe even how much it migh cost?

    thanks

  4. Thanks and I am the one fishing I just bring my daughter with me and she is only a year old and likes to run wild sometime that is why I don't want to take her Queenston or something like that because I don't want to take a chance at her falling in. And as for the tackle I have floats and all my leaders made for them thanks to the help of the guys at Grimsby Tackle, I take back what I said about Adrian when I was there last time he was great and helped me greatly. I was just wondering about the weather if it will effect the bite tomorrow morning. I am going to try some creeks and for myself I would rather catch a trout from a creek rather then a stocked pond.

    Thanks Chris.

go to humber river... under old mills station. lots of steelheads, some browns. but unfortunaly, you will have to know what you doing, they do not jump into your net. anyways, not sure what you will catch with all this rain/wind this week. man, having ONE year old kids running around while you fishing, is not the greatest idea.

i prefer having those 40 lb dogs running around, who aperantly do not bite, piss on your takle boxes, and jumping into the water, scaring all the fish. one of the main reasons i try to stick to boat fishing.

  5. Hello,

In the last couple of reports I'v read, guys have been catching a lot of suckers while steelheading. I'm bored out of my tree and was wondering if somebody could point me in the right direction as to where I could go to hook into some suckers. Any info would be greatly appreciated :)

If you would rather PM me, please do so

    Sean

few days ago, my father catch a few at humber river, while fishing for bow. old mills bridge(bloor/jane area). its just a mater of time when you will have 100s of them grabing everything you trow at them

  6. thats me again with outboard motor questions:)

thanks to all who replied about my hissan 60hp not starting. problem solved with new starter.

now for the motor number 2.

    90Hp, NISSAN, 3 cyl.

we have rebuild the motor completely. redone the 3 housings, increased compresion. changed all the guskets, rebuild the carburator.

now, it seems like the timing is wrong. i have no clue about it.

i do not mind taking the boat to garage, to deal with it by professional. but do not want to take it to oficial dealer... who in fact, mdke enough from me.

can some one tell me how much it might cost me? is there a difference between different manufactors? maybe some one knows a guy in south etobicoke who dose this?

    thanks

  7. did you attach the kill switch?

    my number 1 guess.

maybe you overfilled motor with gas, sparplugs cannot fire?????

also, check sparkplugs and their spacing. i bought new ones last year, recomended by manual. strangly enough, they had bigger gap. had to bend them in to work properly.

did you dump your last years gas? you could have colected some garbage, that pluged the line. maybe carburator?

my motor didnt start as well. i posted here, and a few guys saved me a lot of time and nerves. flyweel was spinning, but i guess not enough to start the motor. apperantly, starter was gone. had to replace it.

  8. hello guys.

i am planning to upgrade my 5-6 year old fishfinder. i do not want to spend more than 300-350 for it.

i been checking basspro, found sme nice/complicated ones:

    1. Humminbird® Fishfinder 768 Sonar External GPS Combo - 299

    2. Lowrance® Mark-5x DSI Gray Scale Fishfinder - 299

knowing its an american based site, most than likely our store wont have it, or will for a different price.

can some one recoment what models are good... would like to have mapping and gps included. and something thats somewhat reliable. i do not care about colour screens, high resolution.

and enother question.... can i have 2 fishfinders installed to feed from same battery as the motor? i do have additional 2 batteries that attached to trolling motor, maybe its beter to attach on them???

  9. At least you've got it working now Shurik.

I've got an old style starter rebuild "shop" down the road from me... I haven't stumped him yet in 25 years, giving him everything from a Zetor tractor to an Airplane starter. He, and his father before him, always makes them work.... with usually a complete rebuild for under $50.

2 bad this guys do not have google adds.

  10. thank everyone for help. it was starter after all. i was trying to find parts for it, to repair myself, but unfortunally, some companies monopolize their product, leave you no choice but to buy from them only, and for astronomical prices. i was given option to pay 570 for starter, 100 for order, and 60 for TESTING their new product. isnt that should be a given... you buy brand new working 100% part. any waays, to make the story short, i found a very nice older man, who fixes starters for cars. i couldnt fix starter myself, no parts....he also couldnt get the bloody brashes and one more thing (forgot english name for it). mechanic, found a warehouse, some what wasnt suprise for me, that holds and ships to missan dealer. basically, i payed 260+hst with delivery to the door in half an hour. and i hardly convinsed denis to take a few bucks for his service. unbeliavable, but these guys still exist.

5 minutes to install, and the boat started first try no problem.

    ps

in states its much cheaper to buy, but delivery and time for shiping is to long. like for everyhting else, i need it wright away before i loose the will to do something.

  11. If you spent half a day spinning the starter over there is a very good possibility you may have overheated the starter and burned it out.

Starters draw a lot of energy and much of it turns into heat. eventually it can melt internal parts and short out.

Always give it time to cool after extended cranking.

This advise pertains to all starting motors.

However...like many of the folks have said already, batteries only have so much energy stored, connections (both power & grounds) can burn and go open circuit and solenoids can also develop bad contacts.

    thank you all for replies.

today i gave a little hit to the starter cover (something i read on other posts). now with ignition on, it starts to spin, just not enough to start the motor. some times i can hear empty spin. also, its good for 3-4 tries. then again, clicking with out spining. i hope it makes sence. could it be worn out brashes?????

just in case its bad, can it be rebuild?

  12. hello guys.

i have spend half a day trying to start an outboard 90hp motor, nissan 1994. boat was siting since last july. at first, when trying to run the motor, flyweel was starting to spin, but the motor wouldnt start. it happened before, most of the time when boat was cold. after lets say 5-10 try, the motor would start, warm up and no problem for the rest of the day.

here is the real problem. i tried to run the motor over 20 times. then every time i turn the ignition, i hear click and thats it. is it possible that the starter died???? is there a way to check, troubleshoot the starter? i borowed a battery from friend, will charge it fully and try again. in the mean time, pulling my hair out.

if anyone had experience with this, please help. i wanna avoid goind to mechanic if its something small.

    thanks

  13. Any body have or know of any problems with this type of motor? Also any ideas of what to look for before purchasing? I have checked out websites and talked to a few people with experience with used outboards but mroe opinions are appreciated.

    Thanks

first of all, i am not an expert. i will tell you how i got taken with one.

i started the boat i bought on the parking lot. it run no problem after 3-4 tries. when i took it on the water, it run no problem. only when i wanted to go faster, in didnt go no where. basically, boat didnt go more than 5km/hr. i took it to mechanic in port perry. first thing they checked the compresion. the motor is nissan's, 3 cldr, 90hp. compresion on two cylinders was 140. on the middle one, it was 110. the way i was explained, compression should be close on all 3, with small difference. it took me 4 weeks to rebuild the motor with a friend of mine. cost us 1300 in parts. head guskets, cylinders, electrical. it was a great buy after everything was fixed, but i wouldnt go through it if i knew. also, see if head is not bended. if it is, you will spend a fortune to replace it.

also, i drive only american cars. but a few fishermen with johnsons, mercury and etc not to happy. if you new, you wont have a problem for a while, but used are different story. just my 2 cents on the topic.

  14. ok guys, thanks for advices and tips.

couldnt get the 3M product no were. one of my bodies is working for honda dealer, and does paint work for them. they are usung the 3M stuff, but i would not be able to get the compaunds earlier than month or so.

i have found a product called "buff magic" and "pro polish" by SHURHOLD. for both compounds paid about 50 bucks. i did a sample on the boat, and couldnt believe my eyes. basically in a few minutes area became like new. for a moment i was more excited than going for muskie opening.

i was trying to avoid wet sanding as many recomended, just because i had no clue how to do it corectly, and had no desire to spend few days for restoration. i will try to finish tomorrow and will post pics. hopfully it will help some one as well before season starts.

  15. I'll add pics in a minute, mine was 10 times worse than your boat, mine was very rough to the touch now is smooth as a waxed buick.

I used 3M Perfect It Rubbing Compound # 05973 and 3M Final Glaze # 06066 and then gel coat polish to seal it. After wet sanding.

can you please tell me where can i purchase 3m products. i searched the net, came across this products as well. the only thing i am not a big fan of ordering online. if anyone knows store or a supplier in toronto, please let me know. thnks

  16. thanks for replies.

i made a few pictures. the more i looked at the boat, i star noticing that the bottom of the haul still has noticable shine. i would love to make it all look at least close to it. also when i vipe the fiberglass with water, it apears shiny for a bit, then when dries, loosing it. with poor knowledge and a bit of common sence, i believe waxing may do the trick. problem is i bettter ask before making it worse than it is.

please look at few pics i made, and tell me what you think.... thanks

  17. Wow, how bad is it? Too far gone for some rubbing compound/wax?

basically, the boat is black with golden/silver spots. when i wash it, it darkens for a a bit (a few minutes). on the sun, it looks flat/mate, with little to no shine at all. visually, from little knowledge i have, i dont think waxing would help.

i have a story behind the boat. me and a best friend of mine bought the boat end of august last year. we had a nissan 60hp motor on enother boat, that had zero problems. we kind of upgraded.... this boat had a 90hp nissan, fishwell, beter trolling motor.

to make the story short, motor was gone. didnt have compresion, didnt pull the hull. so we had to rebuild it. changed all 3 cilinders, and bantch of other stuff:). worst part is that we lost our fishing fall season.

now when the motor is like new, i would like to spend a day to bring its look back. i dont think wet sanding is necessary, but after reading, it might be the best way to go. just more time consuming.

what i notice on the body, some spots have "original" or might be not, clear coat pealed off. i guess there is a gel i need to apply to fill it up?

is wet sanding will remove clear coat all together?

    anyways, thanks for repplies.

  18. hello guys.

i have a black fiberglass "bass fishing boat" that lost its shine. i do not have financial flexibility to just give the boat to specialist and pick up a good looking candy. decided to do it myself. i been reading on internet about some ways to restore the colour, but there are million ways and products. most of them are in the states. i live in toronto. to me, it seems like "vivilon" have beter looking results. it could be the case, or they really know how to show of their stuff.

some sites recomend clear gel, some clear coat. from my understanding, gel is a temporary fix (up to a year). clear coat might be good for longer. as i will keep my boat for longer, i would prefer to apply the beter finish.

i have spray gun/compresor if spraying required.

if anyone have some tips, an idea what is beter to buy, and maybe even some address it would be great.

    thanks alot

  19. There are fishing maps and there are navigational maps.

Navigation maps are more accurate and more detailed. Fishing maps are generally simplified, but might show trolling routes, fishing areas for different species, weedbeds and other "hot" spots.

Both type of maps will show you the main lake points and secondary points, islands, humps and shoals.

The contour lines will show you the relative depth. This depth will change from season to season, but the map gives you a general picture.

The closer the contour lines are together the faster the drop-off. Lines stacked so close that they touch indicate an underwater cliff.

How do you use the information?

Here are six things you might want to look for...

    1. Points

    2. Ridges.

    3. Channels.

    4. Humps.

    5. Flats.

    6. Islands.

Let's say you are fishing in the Kawarthas...You might want to fish any points or ends of humps or islands that lead into deep water, especially if it leads into the main lake channel.

If you know the seasonal movements of your target species, the map will give you an idea where to look for them. In the Spring, Walleye spawn in moving water with rock and grave bottoms. They will then drop back to rest and feed in the first weedbed or point close to deep water. Check the map for these locations. At the end of the season when the water is cold, Bass will tend to hold in deep water next to shear cliff faces so the they can change depth, to find the most comfortable water temperature, without swimming any distance. Check the map for these locations. Find the spot on the map with a fast drop from 3 to 40 feet and you could have a great day.

Add your own experiences to your map. Places where you catch fish, notes about bottom conditions etc. One guy said he rated any point as a #1, if they also had weeds, rocks or lay downs, or lead into deep water, they became 2's, 3's, 4's or 5's etc.

Overtime a map like this will allow you to hit your most productive spots in a logical sequence...You will have your own "Milk Run."

    Good Luck;

    Garry2R's

thanks for a great repply ...

  20. Shurik:

Do a search on this form for Wolseley Bay. We've stayed at Wolseley Lodge about 4 or 5 times and heading back there this September. I should have some posts and reports for others who were asking.

I really don't think there is a map of the lower French that shows the water depths and contours. You can stop at the French River Trading Post out on Rt. 69 and get a map of the French River. It wil show the river, fishing camps, cottages, etc, and a general outline of the river itself.

YOu may inquire at the lodge to see if they have any maps and some "hot spots" noted. I know we can get one at Wolseley Lodge, but this may only be available to their guests. I'd think the lodge owners could lead you to a few locations to try.

Not sure what the low water levels will do for fishing in that area and basic navigation. Be very careful. The French River is known for making a mess of a motor in a heart beat. I just came back today from Lakair and have the scratches and dings to prove it.

Good Luck and be sure to put up a report when you get back. Curious what I may be in for - in 2 1/2 months.

thanks for the warnings.... head about it as well.

regarding the post... you bet i will... hopfully with something to be proud off. i am heading there on july 1st to 4th.

  21. hello.

planing to go fishing with the family for half a week to bryer lodge at french river. never fished french river, but keep hearing great things aboit it.

quiet honestly, i am planing to target muskie most of the time, but not sure how it will go.

can any one give me some tips about wolseley bay? what depths to look for, structures, what lures to use at this time of the year? basically any help will be apreciated.

    thanks a lot

    ps

tried google but couldnt findany depth map fpor french river or wolseley bay... any advice?

  22. yes, there are a few models like you described. cant recall model number.... and actually this way i am not helping in any way. but most of the new makes and models over 500$, should have that. a beter way, from my experience, you should have 2 of them. one set up for dept, the other one as sonar.
