  1. Ok, I lied.... I have one more thing to add. Chessy is 100 percent correct. Port Hope has always been very angler friendly! What other town in this province can you set up a bloody tent in the middle of a park in town and stay for opener???? I can't think of any! They provide garbage cans, a fish cleaning station and washrooms as well. What more do you want! I agree the fishing is less than poetic, but they certainly provide well for the fisherman!!
  2. I have absolutely zero interest in catching a chinook in a river. Other than bait! I am however rather curtious and remove my salmon carcasses and "dispose"'of them appropriately, and not riverside! I also generally can avoid it as several friends are trollers, and usually have a guest or 2 that will keep August kings. I get the skeins, so it cuts down on the unpleasantness of fishing them in the river. I too was a big fan of cohos! The last one I caught Ontario side in a river was probably 8 or 9 years ago. Criticism of a program that has so far shown a rather large failure rate isn't "dissing" it is fair criticism. I believe what I have said is fairly accurate. If this program didn't have a lot of internal support in the MNR ie: it's someone's pet project, and they have some pull, something that has been so unsuccessful for so long would likely have been dumped. Opinions are like you know what.... And that is my opinion. In a relatively free country I am allowed to have one. I would prefer to see m tax dollars that in my opinion are being wasted on this program, redirected to more successful programs. And that's as far as I will go with this discussion.
  3. The Atlantic program is an utter failure, and has little angler support from my unscientific polling. I've yet to meet an angler who thinks the money spent is worthwhile. I believe it is propped up solely by the MNR and a couple of associations. I am not sure why, but it's a lot of money wasted on someone's pet project.
  4. If ever the question to go or not go comes up, I ask myself 2 questions. Is it safe to do so? And will I regret not going? If the answer to question 1 is yes, inevitably the answer to question 2 will be yes. I choose to save myself the disappointment, pack the car, and go fishing!! Good luck!
  5. When has that ever stopped a municipality???? LOL
  6. I fish for steelhead, pickerel, crappie and perch and salmon only when I need bait, and not if I can get a bunch of skeins from open water trolling buddies. The pickerel are a once a year annual trip, and occasional ice fishing trip, and the perch and crappie are occasional distractions, either through the ice or in the spring if nothing else is going on. I havent ice fished in 2 years now, and cant say i miss it that much! Outside of that, I enjoy targeting steelhead, but I no longer looking forward to catching spawned out tired bows on opener. I prefer to catch them in the colder months of spring if possible, and in the fall. Otherwise I do a bit of hunting here and there. At this point I just enjoy the seasons as they come up, I don't sit in my basement polishing tackle or the like!
  7. I have caught them jigging weed pockets in the evening in a couple of feet of water in summertime. The lake being generally shallow, the pics will be where the food is at, so if that's in the slop, you will catch them in the slop! It's funny as heck to catch them like bass, but there you go!!
  8. The best bite on scugog has always been in the afternoon. If I waned to fish panfish, I would head out about noon or 1pm and keep moving until i found some willing fish and then about 1.5 hours before dark I would head into about 2-4 feet of water, drill about 25 holes and fish with a pimple tipped with a minnow and stinger hook for pickerel. That is of course during the open season for pickerel. That closed on feb 28, as I am sure your aware! Anyway, that has worked well for me in the past! Good luck!
  9. I generally associate simms gear with whiny spey fishermen LOL!
  10. I have an older generation of the BPS bibs. For what it's worth, they have always kept me pretty dry and comfy in rough weather. Cabelas goretex is also pretty good stuff, and I have a goretex jacket by cabelas, as well as one of their dry plus wading jackets. Both keep most of the rain out, and breath fairly well. If you put a hard enough beating on any breathable material, they will eventually take on a bit of water in high friction areas, you can mitigate this somewhat by treating them with a good quality wash in like nik wax from time to time.
  11. Beautiful job, we chose the same color for the bulk of our house, but my wife wanted "accent walls" of course! I to, am almost done painting! Can't wait for a break to go fishing!!
  12. Scored 2 pairs of breathable SImms cheapy waders for $140 a pair..... With a lifetime warranty LOL! They aren't fancy, but with a return policy like Simms has, I don't care! I wonder if I can still get the warranty if I black out their logo LOL!
  13. Rest in peace Tom!!
  14. Get a mini mag lite, unscrew both ends and use the aluminum tube and some hockey tape to fix your busted section for the interim until you can order a new pole!
  15. That's not a trick, that's smart enforcement! Glad to hear they where out!
  16. Nice pics!! I don't even carry a camera anymore since getting an iPhone!
  17. When you end up in an accident, it will be noted on the report wether or not your car had snows. If you have claimed to have snows to your insurer, and do not, it is grounds for your insurance to be cancelled. Hardly worth your discount! For those claiming a false sense of security, you have either never driven with snows in a bad storm, or you are too cheap to buy them! They make an incredible difference in traction!
  18. I have fished there since I was a teenager, and can count how many times I have seen a CO there on less than 5 fingers. The removal or installation of a sign won't make a bit of difference! There will always be guys that fire their floats north of the border! Maybe they will just stop standing under the bridge! To be frank, in years of steelheading I have been checked by mnr enforcement maybe a half dozen times! Honest guys will always be honest, and shady characters will continue to do their thing! I have come to accept practically zero wildlife enforcement as just the way it is, and I no longer worry about it! I just make sure my kids know right from wrong, and that's good enough!
  19. You will never match the top speed of the motor you currently have, unless as mentioned you go with a Yamaha 2 stroke. The 4's are heavier, and often don't have the same bottom end as a 2 stroke. The motor you have is (or should be if its been treated well) very reliable, and reasonably light! I have a 1996 Evinrude 15hp as well as a 2001 Nissan 9.8 2 stroke, and I wouldn't trade either of them for a modern 4 for the purposes I use my motors! If I wanted to troll all day, then maybe, but for the relatively minor cost of fuel in this engine size, and the weight and performance advantages of a 2 stroke, I think you may be trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. I also use synthetic oil in my outboards and that cuts down on fumes somewhat! If I where you and had money burning a hole in my pocket for a newer outboard, I would buy the Yamaha 2 stroke!
  20. He just doesn't have one..... Lol! My IPhone has pretty much replaced my laptop for me!
  21. With respect to the starter not elevating to engage the flywheel, I had a 96 mariner 30hp outboard with this same issue in cold weather. I would sometimes have to stick a screwdriver under it and push up while hitting the starter... Always interesting! A complete disassembly and degrease, followed up by light oil lube was the eventual cure. I guess there was some grease in there that gummed up badly in cold weather???? As for the wiring, I have no idea sorry.
  22. All the best with your treatment! Beautiful fish!
  23. I have had to order from ardisam before, it's not cheap unfortunately, but it was the only way I could get replacement parts as at the time there where none available locally!! They where quick with their shipping though, and they over quoted me a bit on shipping so it wasn't quite as expensive as I thought it would be when I got the credit card bill! Good luck!
  24. I bought my marcum in December 2005. The battery still functions great and holds a charge. I can't believe it myself! I don't know what kind of battery they shipped them with, but they are awesome. I thought mine was an anomaly until hearing that your just replacing your battery now.
