  1. I have a 587 ci di. Running it with a hotmaps chip also, and it is quite awesome! The DI, while definately not required is still a pretty neat feature. I never like humminbird prior to this, but they certainly stepped up their game! Having said that, I have used lowrance products for years, and while I have no previous experience with the elite series (prior to the bird, my last unit was a monochrome x15). I am sure you couldn't go wrong with either! Just having colour alone blew my mind!!!!
  2. Everyone dumps on CP. Personally I thinks they are quite fantastic! I have shipped anything from fishing equipment to firearms with CP, and it has always ended up where it belonged, in short order and for way less than their competition would do it for! I recently had a couple of reels shipped from a guy in Toronto to my house in 2 days, and it was sent standard shipping. That's pretty darn good in my opinion.
  3. More time to do the things I love. More time spent in the outdoors with my oldest boy. And if I have to ask for something material, maybe an iPad mini for those odd times when the kids have the tv's tied up, and I want to watch a show. I have everything hunting or fishing related that I need at the moment. Life is good!
  4. My hot water tank rental is $18.75 per month, for a total cost of $225 per year. It is an older vent through roof model. I have had several service calls on it, all paid for by reliance. I don't know if I would make out better if I bought a tank, and I also don't know if I would pay more for rental on a newer model, I guess at that point I would have to make the decision as to wether I will buy or not. So far, a rental has worked out well for me! Your mileage may vary.
  5. I admire your caution. And I agree with you. There is far too much reporting on ice conditions by seasoned fishermen, albeit i think with good intention. I have been partway through the ice when there was 12 inches all around me otherwise. Ice is a fluctuating entity, and must be constantly treated with caution and mistrust. If it where me, and I was out ice fishing at this time of year, I would keep mum entirely. As mentioned, there are way to many people who will head out without a thought because someone posted about "safe ice". I have witnessed this first hand on many occasions. It is monkey see monkey do. If they hear people are out there, then show up and see them, there is a fair percentage of the population who will just giver without checking for themselves! I believe this is what a lot of people don't realize when they see fire and police departments advising people stay off the ice. They are catering to the masses, the bulk of whom are not seasoned fishermen, that's all! Myself I used to venture on to first ice regularly, with all nessecary precautions at hand. I don't bother anymore, I wait for a minimum of 6. It' can still be dodgy even then, but I'm in no hurry, the fish will still be there! Anyway, looking forward to getting out on scugog at least a few trips this year. It's a fantastic fishery!
  6. I have quite a bit of respect for the dude who asked for socks and gitch. He figured he was talking to a novelty Santa, had no expectation of ever gettig anything out of it. He could've asked for a giraffe with a saddle, instead he said hey I need some socks and undies. Fair enough!
  7. As they say in the hood, WORD!
  8. I wish more people would eat bass, They are almost as tasty as pickerel, and easier to come by! I keep a limit of bass a couple times a year for dinner fish. Keeps the pressure off the pickerel!
  9. I've found that longer 2 piece rods are troublesome to find a rod/reel cae for, and when you do they are quite expensive. I would just try to keep it out of the way. I have been fortunate so far and my youngster hasn't wrecked any fishing gear yet!
  10. Same here, it seems the FARTHER you are from the hubs, the cheaper the gas is. Strange, as it should cost more to deliver it where I live. Funny that!
  11. You would be better server to fish the mouth of narrower tributaries that neck the river down a little to concentrate the fish, ie: some of our eastern creeks. the credit is huge at the mouth in comparison, but certainly you could catch them there! I would toss an egg sinker with a floating roe bag, filled with stinky skein. Bring a Coleman lantern, a lawnchair, a book and sit tight. You most certainly can also catch them on hardware, but I prefer the flatfish and spinners in the daylight when the float bite slows down. Night fishing for bows, I always fished big stinky jam bags off bottom, and it produced. I don't fish trout at night anymore, and haven't in many years, but I don't imagine much has changed!
  12. In what world. The reality is a lot of university grads, unless they are the holder of a professional degree are taking jobs wherever they can get them. I agree the salary isn't high, but I wouldn't be so certain of your statements. I think if I had to choose these days, I might favor college, or a combo of college and university with a co-OP element. Having a degree isn't the path to good fortune it may once have been.
  13. I'm not familiar with this machine in particular, but I just thought I'd add that I've been extremely satisfied with any Yamaha power equipment I've owned!
  14. The police routinely dispatch hit by car animals. Heck often the humane society or dog pound guy does in rural areas. I don't believe that would've made the news at all. I'm really not against what the guy did, but if it had been me in that rather public situation with a bunch of cars backed up behind me in the middle of the day on a busy roadway, well I'm waiting for police to deal with it, but fhen again I've always been a stay off the front page type of guy!
  15. There is an OPP detachment in bracebridge from my recollection, and no doubt there is a gravenhurst car. I personally would've waited and let them shoot the bear, rather than be photographed stoning it to death in front of kids on Bethune drive. I am a hunter of many many years, and have dispatched my share of animals, but sometimes discretion is needed. Undoubtedly he wouldn't have been investigated by anyone if he had waited a short while. Nonetheless you are free to do as you see fit with the next bear you hit!
  16. Poor choice. Quiet stretch, no one around, then sure you do what you need to. Tire iron, rock, whatever. On Bethune in the middle of the day, couple of kids watching and the OPP probably pretty close in that area. Discretion needed perhaps!
  17. Nail on head. Buddy kept himself 32 smolts for the fry pan no doubt. A crappy deal all around, however some of the suggested punishments are a bit over the top. We can barely get appropriate jail time for sexual predators in this country, and people are calling for jail time over fisheries offences?
  18. Can't explain it. A lot of guys on fishing websites expect that you will meet them somewhere. That's all well and fine if its convenient, but I have been asked on several occasions to go way out of my way for a relatively low value item. It's strange but true!
  19. True! Last guy wanted me to drive an hour to meet to sell him a $60 item. I drive a pickup truck, not happening!!! kijiji is great for avoiding that!
  20. Do you have a written estimate?
  21. Some days live bait is the show. Generally you can get them to take artificials but in certain circumstances a minnow or worm presentation is the deal sealer!! Better luck next time!
  22. You know, initially I was hoping this guy would resign and slink off into the sunset, but not anymore! I hope he goes kicking and screaming into the sunset, while eventually being run out of town on a rail. This is just too awesome, and every day some new special kind of awesome comes to light! It gives us poor country bumpkins something else to goof on Toronto for!
  23. If you are referring to the hub style pop out Eskimo huts, I have one of the older green ones. It is perfect for my needs, stows on the rack of my atv, or fits inside a small sled when I'm on foot. Very comfortable and convenient to fish out of, and having owned both a fish trap pro, and currently also own a fish trap guide, I generally take the Eskimo hub style hut every time. I really don't find it takes a lot more effort to set it up once I've found fish. As for the Eskimo flip overs, yes I owned one of the first generation ones, and I wasn't a big fan of it, but I think they've gotten a lot better. Perhaps someone has more info on them!
  24. To answer your questions as to why I liked the marcum, well I own one, it has been good to me, I've never needed a dual beam, as I haven't had issues shallow or deep, and you asked about flashers specifically. Nothing to do with hype, and I know nothing about the humminbird flashers, but I do own one of their colour graph/gps units and have been very happy with the performance.
  25. Try one out sometime. You will be absolutely amazed at the info it will provide you. OP, I have an original VX1 that was rebranded for gander mountain. I bought it in 2005 and it has been an amazing unit, and done all I have needed it to. I'm sure the adjustable zoom would be even better on the 3 series, but I mainly fish for bottom dwellers, so I get by just fine!
