  1. Female fish lay thousands of eggs. Only a few become actual fish for a lot of reasons - predation, food availbility and other constraints of the habitat. As long as the angling pressure doesnt cause the breeding female population to crash (a la the cod fishery), then taking fish out of the ecosystem, even what would seem like a lot, shouldnt eliminate the species altogeher. Fish populations are naturally cyclical like any other animals and human predation has been a factor for our fisheries for hundreds of years. Anyway, of greater concern to me would be habitat loss, pollution, fishing during the spawn, etc. - anything that would impact the ability of the fish to lay thier thousands of eggs in the first place.
  2. Sounds to me like a beagle is probably not for you. Three walks a day, if they actually did happen, are really just a warm up for a beagle. I've done three hour walks with my hound and he'd be still pulling like a tractor by the end of it. When he was young, my hound could run 8-10 hours a day and be ready for more the next morning. The only way to settle them down is to get them really fat, which seems to be a popular approach for some.
  3. Since Canada Post is a federal institution, I sort of assume this has something to do with the seperation of church and state which is a key tenet of liberal democracies and intended to limit the influence of the once very powerful churches. I'm guessing its just some moron, bully boy at Can Post who only got through half of pol sci 101 and missed out on the section regarding charter rights below of which are are the first two sections. Notice unlike Canada Post, they must have thought the religion thing was pretty important, b/c they put religiopn at #2a which is the first fundamental right cited / freedom of speech is #2b: 1. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees the rights and freedoms set out in it subject only to such reasonable limits prescribed by law as can be demonstrably justified in a free and democratic society. 2. Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: a) freedom of conscience and religion; freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication; c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and d) freedom of association.
  4. maybe there is a way in the software to have three folders - one that is the general discussion which has all the posts just like it is now. one folder that has only the NF posts and one forum that has the posts that are not designated NF (so presumably a fishing post) that way, the folks who like the GENERAL DISCUSSION (like me) could go to that folder, the folks who are interested in the fishing post could go to the FISHING folder (which sorts out the NF threads) and the NF folder (which sorts out the NF threads). same threads, just sorted differenltly for different tastes.

  6. I think it really depends on how fishing impacts your life. Think about it: If the thread is about your lawnmower and how to sharpen the blade, its really just a thread about how to get your lawn mowed faster so you can go fishing. If its a thread about gas prices, its really just a fishing thread about how to make sure you can afford gas to get out to your fishing hole. If its a thread about your friend's and family's and their health, its b/c time at the hospital or worse really takes away from time spent fishing, not to mention sadness makes fishing a lot less enjoyable. If its a thread about quitting smoking, its because money saved from smokes buys tackle and fuel and maybe a fly-in trip somewhere. If its a thread about your water heater bursting, its b/c you cant go fishing if you basement is filled with three feet of water. If its a thread about a big buck, well thats simply about having some freezer food handy, so you can get dinner over quick and back out onto the lake for a few more casts before the sun goes down. The reality is, life dramas big and small all relate to fishing in someway or another.
  7. What a smart bunch on this forum! Putting your vehicle through the ice could happen to almost any one of us posting on this forum. Or if not that, maybe falling out of your boat and drowning b/c your forgot your life vest that day. Or maybe forgetting your garbage back at the boat launch. Or maybe going a little too fast at night and jumping your Chapparal 40' through the air and being lucky enough for you and all of your buddies to have a laugh about it a couple of months later. This stuff is not happening to the other guy who's way dumber than we all are - its happening to folks just like you and I. I do lots of stupid stuff and most of it, I've been lucky enough to get away with - so far...
  8. Every spring on cottage opener, I pick up at least one bag of garbage (sometimes two) from our shoreline left over from our fine ice fishing friends. One year, someone didn't bother to bring his dog home. That was pleasant. Anyway, per GCD, I'll send pix come April.
  9. I quit last year on December 29th, so if I can stay off smokes for the remainder of the day, I will have a full year off the smokes and honestly, I don't miss them a bit. In fact, once I got over the physical withdrawal - 6-8 weeks of hell, I never looked back. What I notice with many folks is they still yearn for a cigarette and quitting for them must be next to impossible. You need to do the research so you understand that nicotine and cigarettes are not your friend and what you think the cigarettes do for you is actually an illusion based on your nicotine additction and nothing more. Once I finally realized that the smokes didn't do what I thought they did, quitting was actually simple (although again, the first few weeks are painful). I used the following resources: Allen Carr's The Easy Way to Quit Smoking www.whyquit.net www.quitnet.com (sign up for the daily emails!) I wouldn't smoke a cigareete right now if it was my last day on earth and I used to LOVE smoking. Good luck.
  10. I'd love to get one of those slabs, but for some reason, my guide can never get me on them.
