  1. Ok guys, here's what I could find available for my dates (I expanded my region, have to, I didn't book early enough to be picky)

Also some spots on Lake Manitou and Lake Kagawong (Manitoulin Island, but we've been there the last 2 years).

At a glance, which would you guys go for! I'll book today.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

  2. Hey all,

My kids have never been to Quebec, so, heading up there the week of July 20th. Planning to visit Ottawa and Montreal for a few days then spend a week fishing. Do any of you fine anglers have any recommendations for a lake with cabins for rent with a boat?

Over the last 3 years we've done

    Manitoulin Island (twice)

    Lake Nippising

Those locations are quite far from Montreal, if anyone knows a good spot within 1-3 hours of Ottawa/Montreal, we don't mind to venture out a bit into Ontario but not so far north as Nippising or Manitoulin.

    Any suggestions, greatly appreciated.

  3. Thanks everyone.

I'm going to do these three things:

    A) hire a guide for a 1/2 day of largemouth madness

B- hire a guide for a 1/2 day of saltwater fun

    C) bring my gear and try some shore fishing here and there for kicks

I think spending $1000 on a cabin and boat to fish waters I have no clue about (I know it's bass but it isn't ontario, different waters down there) might be a disappointment if I catch a bunch of 1lbers.

Really appreciate all your feedback, helped me get my head straight on this!

  4. If you're going to travel to Florida, why on earth would you spend your time fishing for buckets when there is such incredible saltwater fishing there?

Search some other threads on this board, there's absolutely amazing saltwater fishing that you'll remember for the rest of your life. You can catch bass here. Try something different, and make the most of your time away.

I was thinking of doing both. 3 days at a cabin and also maybe one day in a charter for some sea fishing. I don't have any saltwater gear so I thought I could bring down my freshwater gear. So far, hard to find freshwater cottages online, they look shabby, compared to some of the nice spots up here.

  5. Trying to get away from the Canadian winter end of dec/beginning of Jan.

Anyone have experience bass fishing in Florida? Looking for a cottage/cabin and boat - like we do up here in Ontario.

I was about to scour websites down there but I thought, hey, must be some Ontario dudes who have done this?

    Any tips appreciated.

  6. Wow had a great time in June on lake manitou. Started very slow, just didn't know the lake and inexperienced. So near the end of the trip we went to a spot for perch, jigging worms, and boom, hit a good size walleye maybe 7lb - best I've ever caught. Folks at manitoulin resort first class as mentioned in this post.

Would love to go back in august but that place likely booked out - it's too good not to be. I've emailed many resorts on manitoulin island and the French.

I got a response from mountain view resort - other side of lake manitou? Anyone know them?

Was surprised to hear some many places available on French river so I searched the forum and wow so much negativity and worry, guys saying netting as fished out walleye but bass fishing still good. I just searched because almost every single place on the French I emailed said yes available! For an august booking only 2 weeks from, I was expecting no way it would be available.

So I'm leaning again to manitoulin island - hoping someone knows about mountain view resort and if walleye are available on the west side of the island.

Thanks again for all your help.

Walleye....the tantalizing elusive walleye...I though it would bite off my 8lb line with no leader lol.

  7. Made it to Manitoulin resort on lake manitou (3AM), hmm....looks like I can fish from shore even. Group of 20 of us - likely taking groups on the boat all day. Nothing to go by just fishing map that I'll pick up in the morning. Any tips appreciated - weather 20 degrees sunny with light winds forecast for Monday, Tuesday thunder boomers so will try to make most of Monday.

Thanks all for the advice, place is clean and nice

  8. Yes, I think you guys are right.

I stayed on Manitoulin last year at http://lakeview.manitoulin-island.com/

just me, wife and 2 kids - they loved it.

The lake was a bass lake, it was ok, didn't pick up till the last day but it was like an aquarium when it started hitting. I was thinking to go back to it but the boats were the lowlight, really battered steel boats that stalled a few times out on the lake Kagawong (got it going again lol), also, with bass season closed in mid June, I figured better to go to another lake which has perch and pike etc.

I think Manitoulin resort, the lake there has more variety of fish yea?

  9. Hey guys,

I was at BassPro in Michigan on the weekend and it was like 5 mins till closing, so rather than rush, I said forget it - better to ask for some help.

    Waders:

    1. I want to spend $120-$200 max, should I go stocking foot or boot included, I've had two pairs before, last one was White River, lasted 2 yrs before leaking, I understand they will all leak anyway, any suggestions?

    Rod/Reel:

    2. I have a Shimano Sedona 2500, want to spend under $100 for the reel, what do I fish? Mainly rivers, wading, mainly bass and catfish, mainly 0.5lb to 5lb, I want to keep it light. For a rod, i'm thinkin another 7ft medium light. Should I combine, or to get good gear, must I buy rod and reel separate, would like to spend $150 on rod/reel. Basspro guy was trying to sell me Sedona 4000 (don't want to go bigger) and a bionic rod (BassPro brand), not sure about that, that's why i left lol

I checked kijijji in London, but not much happening, not sure if I want to buy used stuff.

    Any help appreciated.

  10. On my way to Manitoulin Island last week, I crossed the Maitland river. I never realised how close I was to it. Perhaps an hour from home. I usually track to the Grand (or sometimes stay in the Thames here in London). Thinking of hitting the Maitland river this fall but it looked shallow, does anyone know if there are spots to wade and search for pools? On the highway where I crossed it it was shallow, I think it was very near to the lake.

Would beat the traffic of the 401 and would be a pleasant drive with the manual transmission!

I searched the forum, not much discussion on the maitland river...maybe I should just take a drive and see, however, sometimes I find great spots but they are between private land so I thought I should raise the topic.

    Thanks guys!

  11. Hey all,

A few years ago I was bass fishing in early Oct. (seems to drop off in the rivers for bass that time) and to my surprise I got into some trout! What a blast it was!

I tried to time it next year but never bumped into them. I was wondering is it a date issue or a water temp issue or both? Someone told me they tend stay at a spot then move on so it can be hard to locate them?

    Thanks

  12. Hey guys,

A friend of mine has been pushing me to see Manitoulin Island for a few years. Finally, I decided to give it a shot. I have two kids so it seems like an adventurous place. I don't see too much discussion or posts re: Manitoulin Island or Kagawong Lake. I'm wondering if anyone has fished the area or lives up there. I chose Kagawong over Lake Manitou since the later has no bass and I thought it might be tough targeting only Lake Trout (no experience) and perch.

If anyone has any advice, I love to fish rivers by foot (wading) and would like to find fishing areas one can hike to (off the beaten track).

    Plan of attack:

Bass (dropshot - worms, minnows, tubes (coffee infused), topwater crankbaits (where viable), spinners).

    Walleye (crankbaits, jigs)

    Catfish (dropshot minnows)

Trout (not sure, thinking spinnerbaits and cranks)

Spending a week, was originally planning 2-3 days but too far + what if it rained those days!

Should be an adventure, any tips or advice appreciated, is it safe to eat from Huron? Are all the great lakes polluted?

    Thanks
