Peterborough City Councillor caught with too many trout
chris.brock replied to Grimace's topic in General Discussion
this is from the Yukon Fishing Regs- Survival rates are high Studies reviewed by the Yukon Fish and Wildlife Management Board show that survival rates for released fish can be very high. These studies suggest that about 94% of released pike survive along with about 90% of grayling. Survival rates for released lake trout range from 93% for lightly handled fish to 76% for deep-hooked fish. Hook placement is a significant factor affecting the survival of all species -

I'm guessing the survival rate is pretty good for released lake trout even from 80+ feet down, most of them "burp" air bubbles and swim straight back down -
A few years ago, we went with Parks Fly In to their Cam Lk/ Little Missinaibi Lk camp. It's pretty close to Abbey (we checked out the portage from Elbow to Abbey). Can't really give you any great tips, we did well with jigs and twister tails (no live bait needed). If the wind is pounding on a rocky shore, try casting minnow baits into the choppy waves near shore. I know Solopaddler has been to Little Miss., pretty sure he's at Abamasagi this week though have a great trip, ask if you want any more info

Two needed for 8/12-8/19 Fly In to Peninsular L.

I posted this when I got back flew into Peninsular Lk from Jellicoe, an outpost of Ara Lake Lodge, for a week, 4 guys it's a giant lake with only 1 other camp, lots to explore, as well as the Attwood River dumping in and flowing out 765 fish total, including mostly walleye and pike, 8 brookies and 1 whitefish a big year class of 21 and 22 inch walleye made the average walleye size great, in the evening, in some spots, fish could be caught on almost every cast the bigger pike seemed to be MIA until the last day when we caught an 8, 9 and a 13.5 lbs fish, I'm guessing, fishing this week would produce alot of big pike if targeted, we were likely a week early 5 of the 8 brookies were over 2 lbs, we could have probably caught alot more, but we layed off them, they weren't releasing that well and we were catching and releasing them, they liked bigger baits like mepps #3, and larger cleos we had a great trip, not a drop of rain, moderate wind, great sunsets, northern lights, wildlife (moose, eagles, a bear, a marten as well as a tame groundhog and a tame grey jay) it's pricey but I would recommend the outfitter and the lake -

I would like to see him step down and get a real job, he broke the law claiming ignorance while if anyone, he should know the regs I think the "jerk" comment is justified, he deserves it, and probably worse -

it is a great lake, I was there in June, there's 2 camps on it though, still plenty of water for everybody -
Did you guys get over to Indian?

he seems like a bit of fuss pot I'd rather have cedars for privacy instead of looking at his house/ yard

My first sonar was a humminbird, 25 years ago, and I've always stuck with them. My 565 portable, 2 years old, needs a new transducer ($80 after all's said and done), and I've bought quite a few transducers for previous models I'm happy with the performance of the Humminbirds I've had, I just think they should last longer without repairs Has anyone bought a few different brands (Eagle, Lowrance, Garmin etc) and has some insight? thanks
-
I'll do that, thanks

Is William Tozer still operating? I'm guessing there isn't a website, but do you have a contact #? It sounds pretty cool

I'm using rechargable, sealed batteries. I'm pretty sure it's not a setting, I went through everything a few times, and it has done this before and then rectified it's self somehow. The battery indicator gives me a meter reading on % charged and voltage too On the same trip last week, an eagle fishfinder had the same symptoms, I'm wondering if at times there may be a severe thermocline or alot of pollen and clutter up high in the water

From the plane, you can see clear cuts and logging roads pretty close to lakes like Ara, Meta, Kag etc, I was surprised to see how far north of the Ogoki River the roads have gone, there's even a logging or mining base camp up there, on alot of the southern lakes, there's a little buffer of trees hiding a clear cut the natives have a free pass to travel wherever they please, I'm OK with that I can see where the fly-in outfitters are coming from though, it's a tough sell to fly people in for $1200 when you can drive in and camp for nothing with a little effort I've heard stories of Lee Cole out of Chapleau being pretty fiesty with portagers who get into his outpost lakes

I have a Humminbird 565 portable, sometimes, the bottom will appear faint, the temperature will disappear, and the depth will flick on and off, like it's having trouble finding bottom the symptoms seem to last for a few outings, the battery check says the battery is 2 thirds fully charged it's ok when I'm fishing shallow, but when looking for lakers or deep stuff, it sucks and doesn't seem to mark fish thanks

I hear ya about the local knowledge, you should have a great trip, you won't be hiking into Peninsular though, it's almost 200km from Jellicoe
-
I'm assuming it's the lodge only that's closed? Is Caesar's North Camps (Oliver and John) still operating? just curious I'm guessing with the recession, low $US and high gas prices, some outfitters are going to be feeling the pinch

I like a mid sized cleo, brass and burgundy colour for the larger brookies, it casts a mile too

Possible tornado touched down south of Minden. Does anyone know anything more about this? -
sounds like a good time how do you guys usually do on Metagami?

The Wenebegon outpost does sound interesting, I think alot of locals are ATVing into the lake too, but it's a good size lake Happy Day Lodge is on Windemere Lk, we were disappointed with it (fishing wise) 5 Mile Lodge also has a Goldie Lk outpost, train in, no walleye though we did well at Ramsey Lk (near Bisco), it's called Ray's Camp, good walleye fishing
-
We didn't do very well there last July but I don't think we figured the walleye out white jigs seem to be the best colour Indian was just abit better than Bisco but we only did Indian for 1 day I get the impression that if you can figure these lakes out (ie technique, baits, etc) they can be pretty good
