  1. Burk is going to build a winner outa that club yet. He starts with the defence, good for him clearing out those panty wastes. It can't get any worse in Toronto, so I give a thumbs up to Burk at least he's not afraid to gut a team that don't want to play. After saturday nights game I'm surprised more aren't gone ..........the week ain't over yet heheheheh
  2. This is not an issue if you use a uni-knot to connect your leader, I use 10lb power pro with 6lb-8lb fluro leaders and the uni- knot is the strongest part of the setup.I never break off at the braid/leader connection. The other reason for a leader with braid is not only to be more stealth but the leader provides a shock absorber and a little bit of stretch when fighting fish. To answer your original question, it really dosn't matter for most appliications. I only use the lighter braid bottom bouncing Browns and Bows, I get longer casts and a better sink rate and more delicate feel with the 8lb-10lb braid. 20lb is a good choice for most every thing else.
  3. I use power pro from 10lb- 30lb depending on the application. You'll get alot further cast with lighter lb test, I only use the lighter lb test for drifting steelhead. I also spray my line with Reel magic it restores the original coating more or less on the braid, I also use boot or leather spray protectant because I have a hard time getting Reel magic. The spray protectant works great in the winter, it reduces the ice build up when the temps are around 0 to -5c any colder braid is pretty hard to use.
  4. Skandic swt or a tundra (snow shoe of the north)
  5. They also did me well last year when I snapped my 10.5 loomis, all said and done $75.00 and a new one was delivered to my door. They took care of me through the whole process and the customer service was top notch
  6. Stay away from HT products absolutly no quality, there built to break.....I've had bad luck with everything they make except for the HT blue fiberglass ice rod, a great perch tool
  7. NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  8. Nipissing walleye go through highs and lows, the last few years have been a bit of low for ice fishers, but nothing wrong witha mess of nip perchies, in fact I'd rather get into a bunch of sweet nip perchies then a trying to get a few slot-size walleye. A few years ago we were getting lots of eyes and very few perch hence the 25 perch limit and there was lots of worry about nip perch, good to see them back and ya the eye's will return in 30 yrs of fishing this lake I've seen up's and downs. It may be like the lake Ontario perch I chase there on a cycle and we're on the bottom of the cycle 2yr's ago we were on the top of the cycle.Anyway nothing wrong with a good feed of nip perch, there probably close to the best tasting perch if not the best tasting freshwater fish in North America, I'd put a Nipissing Perch against any freshwater fish in North America for taste
  9. Do they show the ugly Chinese dirtball factory they build them in. Etec from china is scrap metal Welcome to the new world etec fans or should I say use to be etec fans enjoy your chinese quality while putting North Americans on the unemployment line Sorry for the rag out but when you quote the North American Division president on selling chinese crap it gets under my skin, I already lost my job twice to the chinese and now we get this crap, nice motor to bad you'll only get 40hrs out of it before it craps.
  10. Just another Januay on Nip........What no Bombadiers on the bottom yet
  11. One of my #1 tricks for ice fish'in can't beleive I let it out of the bag hahahahahahaha........an ole timmer taught me that 30yrs ago and it's put more fish in the bucket then just about any technique I've learned since
  12. Here's a chuming trick I use on nipissing. Take 6-8 shinners out of your bucket and put them in a coffee mug, a can, your thermos cup is perfect!!! Shake the hell out of them but don't kill'em daze them good dump them down the hole now take your cup and wash it out in the hole and let the scales drift down. The shak'in up minnow will swim striaght down the hole to the bottom the scales will flutter down. This is the best way to chum on Nipissing you don't want a bunch of dead salties laying on the bottom, unlike Simcoe white fish on Nip I find this to do more damage then good. The fish on nip respond better to little chumming and if your in a cold front or fishing is slow put live bait on regularly and down size, I got an 8lb walleye last year on a 32oz perch jig in -30c , I thought I was marking perch so I changed up to a small perch jig and small perch minnow and got one of the biggest eye's of the year. I also ended up getting 3 more smaller eyes that day on the small offerings which dosn't sound like much, but it was 4 for me in 10hrs and the rest 0 This chumming technique works great on Simcoe perch aswell, it can get perchies smoking baits on aslow day
  13. I've used vexilar, marcum just tried a hummingbird and an x-67 last week. My pick is the vex, they take a freaking beating and keep on ticking. However they all work, they all do the job, the x -67 is the cheapest and works just fine. Don't get caught up in all the bells and whistles you'll catch as many fish with an fl8 as an fl20 you just got more crap to play with. The cheaper Lowerence x-67 shows the same fish as top end hummingbird at about a savings of $250. I know I'll probably get a bunch of techies and pro's telling me about zoom,peak-peak watts an all the other bullpoo they use to sell these units. My best advice is buy what you can afford and learn to use it and beleive what it's showing....oh ya one more thing what ever unit you get BUY ONE they are worth every cent for ice fishing. Other then a good auger, I would say a good sonar is next most important tool, except for your rods and tackle. If you want to convert your summer portable to winter use, I found it just as easy to buy one for winter and not beat the hell out of your summer gear on the ice. Winter sonars are built for winter use, summer sonars are built for summer use. Ice fishing is tough on gear at least for me anyway
  14. hey dude your toy's are your fun, keep it up if it ehhances's your fishing experience then go for it and love it, me I don't need it
  15. I fished gillford, 21' of water on Wednesday, no camaera, no fishfinder and ended up with 20 keepers, the boys with all the electroninics ended up with less to nothing. I see these dudes with all the crap and spend lots of $$$$$ all on the pooo, my sugestion is learn how to fish, learn how to grab keepers. If anything grab a cheap fl8 flasher that unit will tell you all you want to know. freaking camaras are a joke, one time in 30yrs ice fishing did a camera ever help me out and that was on Scugog looking for a weed break. the camera definitly helped us out, other then that it's been alot of wasted weight
  16. Nice idea, I'd like to get a report after a few trips. The only thing that bothers me is the Aluminum conduit is soft and not that strong it cracks and bends and breaks quite easilly. Hopfully it's strong enough for your application, the comercial tow bar is made from steel.
  17. [quname= Dave's Slab-O-Chrome Great way to cap the 09 season! love the rod sweet work, could you PM with the details on the handle and who made it
  18. Back in the 70's it was a snaggers dream dudes, the bait shops use to sell weighted trebles just for this purpose untill they were outlawed. The salmon run will always cause crap, it wasn't any better back then probably worse. Unfortunatly it is what it is and for some reason people love hooking into old dead boots on there last legs of life and others will get all upset with someone killing a useless 3/4 dead salmon.
  19. Now thats a great idea
  20. The secret to using a drill to punch holes is use a a top quality comerical drill, I mean a $350-$400 dewalt pro 1/2" 18 volt drill, with this unit you can punch 10-20 holes and still have a drill. Cheaper mastercraft 18 volts will just blow up under the pressure of a 8-6" auger, do yourselfs a favour dudes buy a freaking auger, to drill with a drill you can buy an auger for the same price and trust me if I got a sweet $350.00 dewalt drill the last thing I want to do is smoke it drilling ice. Buy a auger there built for ice fishing thats the whole deal
  21. WOW, you boys got BOQ dialed in nice, love the reports guys, keep up the good work
  22. Like fishing Port D in November or the Niagara around now hahahahahahaha I like the challenge and trying to figure things out but after 40yrs of trying, these fishies still can screw me up on a consistant basis. It's a never ending learning curve that draws me back day in and day out
  23. Call the Dog Catcher, he'll do drive bys untill he catches the little mutt, then the $250.00 ticket comes out. This will make your neighbour think twice about letting the dog run large. If the dog catcher in your area is anything like the dude here in St Catharines they are very persistant if they know a dog is running at large, and are very good at catching them.Your neighbour may even get the idea if he see's the dog catcher driving around your home.
  24. nice way to go, instead of styrofoam try using a piece of foam from a kids swiming noodle, just cut a 6"-8" piece and attach it the same way with a couple of strips of duct tape. Pretty much makes a copy of the vexilar float set-up
