  1. haven't heard that since undergrad. the fortran compiler from some UofW's supernerds used back when the famous red room housed one of the most powerful supercomputers on the planet. Now my electronic toaster does twice the bogomips. It's amazing what came out of that school over the years. Watcom C and basic became some the early standards in compilers and their janet project was one of the first if not THE first mac networking frameworks used worldwide. Its faculty, grads, and students have put waterloo and UofW on the world map, there's so much innovation at that place for such a relatively young school...
  2. you're probably going to have to switch to other fishing. Other than lakers, he farther into northern ontario you go, the smaller the trout are, that's if they're even in the water. There are practically no migratory fish up there such as salmon and steelhead. The best fishing will be for other species such as suckers, pike, walleye, yellow perch, whitefish and a few others. The bass fishing really drops off up there too. The only stream trout you can expect to get are small rainbows and specks/brook. And you can also expect to see 99% of the rivers freeze over too, the water can still run fast underneath the ice though so stay off. ...there's killer pike and walleye fishing in northern ontario.
  3. Mine. ...some battle scars on the outside from road trips and airlines but the inside is like new. I needed something durable and made to carry a few rods without stuffing them loose into a tube with next to no protection. All cases have pros and cons, this case is no different. What i would like to see is a travel specific version of this case, built like flight cases for guns and bows where there's a handle on one end and wheels at the other. I'll probably end up modifying mine in some way to be like that.
  4. hahaha. nice. now if only we all had that file on our computers at that location. If you have broadband, you can set up an icecast or shoutcast type server and stream it out.
  5. If you can manage 1 piece rods, give the Kistler's a try. Or even better, start looking at components and come up with a cutom built setup.
  6. Is he carrying one of the SPOT gps beacons? those are great fun for your friends.

  8. with only 4Gigs, you would be much better off buying a dvd burner and a stack of discs. $30 for the burner and $40 for 100 standard single layer discs. You'll get the entire 4G on 1 disc, they hold 4.5G. If you go over that and want to stay with single disc backups, you can pay a premium and get dual layer discs which are double the capacity.
  9. great pictures. I'm in a bit of a rush this morning, but i'll definitely come back to read the story later. Looks like you stuck to your plans and hit some very nice fish. ..so many places to fish, not enough time.
  10. I don't know why but this line reminded me of an episode of "Extreme fishing with Robson Green" i watched the other day. It was in South Africa and he's fishing from shore with a local guide and borrowed gear. The guide hands him a long surf rod with a good sized casting reel and he wails on it to make his first cast without thumbing the spool and gets the biggest knot i've ever seen. He let the spool spin like it was attached to a drill. ...and then he admits to that being his first time with a casting reel. ahah. From the way they edited the footage, i would guess he did it a few more times in quick succession before giving up and demanding a spinning reel.
  11. Yes, that's how it works with most levelwind larger reels. The line pawl is always engaged and it moved on all line motion, in or out. It does have an effect on casting distance but it's negligible. If you're using a bigger reel, you're probably casting larger baits so that will pull hard enough. with a decent reel, you'll have no problem casting lures under 1/2 Oz with 300/400 size reels with levelwind although i woudln't try something delicate like a worm on a hook. Levelwinds are common with surf fishermen who cast a few hundred yards but if you're talking competitive casting, yes, most of them will remove anything that might shorten a cast. Yes it is. On a full time levelwind, the line will ALWAYS be in a straight path off the spool and through the line guide. There is absolutely no movement of the line that does not make the line pawl move whether it's casting, reeling, or drag feeding out or spinning the spool back with your thumb. The only time the line goes out of alignment is when you remove the reel's side plate which separates the gears, remove the spool, or reel in the loose end and spin it around the spool a few times This only works on smaller reels that disengage the levelwind during cast. On larger reels (usually over 250 size) where the levelwind is always engaged, holding the spool and winding with the clutch engaged and loosened drag only spins the handle on the drag discs -- the spool and levelwind do not move and the line stays in alignment with the line guide under normal usage.
  12. ah. like a little old lady, eh? Nice. so wadda ya figure? August?
  13. I wouldn't mind seeing that as well. I know people who run one of the most successful salmon hatcheries in the world as far as return rates and consistency and it takes a lot of work and dedication to make it happen. It's a group of about 8-10 full time people, it runs around the clock, and everything they do is down to a science including feed times, food size, release times, disolved gas levels, etc to keep them strong and disease free. Marking can be done with fin clipping, but for the most part, when mass marking is required, hatcheries do it by timing patterns of water heaters which makes distinct otolith markings. They're one of my favorite fish to catch because they put on a good show when they're on the line. ...one of the nicer coho's caught this year. around 35"
  14. Unfortunately, for me and probably most of you, this list will not be of much use because of the exemption below. -companies with whom consumers have an existing commercial relationship; for example, if a consumer has done business with a company in the previous 18 months––such as a carpet-cleaning company––that consumer can be called. Almost all of my junk calls come from Rogers, Fido, banks and other people that i deal with. Rogers is particularly bad all year trying to sell me packages and services I don't want, the banks call me non-stop starting a month or so before the RSP deadline.
  15. I'd like to add that most middle sized (wider) levelwind casting reels including some ABU's are full time levelwinds so the line guide is always in front of where the line was laid on the spool. The pawl moves and lines up with the postion of the spooled line on cast, retrieve, and line dragging out. In contrast, I can't think of 1 low profile that has full time levelwind meaning the pawl does NOT move every time the line moves and it's usually during cast and line dragging out. There might be some, i just can't think of any that do, at any price. Like others have said, this is a tough comparison. It's like asking if you should buy a full size pickup or a toyota corolla next, there's very little common ground between them. As a side note, I did bring a big pile of my fishing gear back to Ontario from my vacation spot. I plan to sell most of it but haven't had time to put out any ads and the list includes a C4 6600. boxed, new, never used. It was a backup that i don't see myself getting into at this point.
  16. too close or too far would also depend mostly on the size of the reel on the rod (and its spool angle) in relation to the size of the guide that you're thinking is too close.
  17. you never know when and what size boat you'll be in when weather takes a bad turn so it's probably best to know what your options are when you encounter different situations. All i can suggest is learn how to work the throttle, trim down, balance the boat if it's obviously leaning, quarter waves, ride crests if you can, move around at slow or no-wake just to maintain steering and wait it out, or maybe find anchorage or hide out in sheltered water if it's an option. get your PFD's on. and stay out of the head? hahaha
  18. I have the frabill case. For multi rod cases, it's probably the only one in that price range with foam all around. almost all tube type cases only have foam at the ends. There are multi rod aluminum cases, i forget some of the manufacturers, but they're quite expensive and not adjustable so they stays one size. I have 1 main issue with the fabrill case and that is the rods in the "lid" (whatever side you decide that is the top) will fall out, so what i've done is secured the rods into the slots, and now it's all good. I'm guessing your bad reviews are mostly about not being able to get 4 rods + reels in there without a lot of adjusting, that's true. What i found is that i don't want the reels in there anyways because 1/ they make the case heavier 2/ i don't want to check my reels as baggage because there's no insurance. ask if you have a question. I can also take pictures if you want to see it in some setup you have in mind or whatever.
  19. It looks great. Did you spine/spline the blank (or find the straightest axis) before setting the reel seat? It might come loose but then any part can come loose after use, I would leave it for now and not worry about it.
  20. I wanted to say that I think this GPS is good but you were looking for 1 reason not buy it...that would be mine. Having unexpandable memory would not be an issue for a lot of users. Having only fixed internal memory also means you cannot buy any preconfigured map cards/chips for this particular unit. you have to build and load anything you want to use. The H series gps's have good receivers and the venture/vista/legends are nice and small. Size is the one disadvantage of the GPSMAP 76CSx mentioned in another reply, it's a monster when you have to carry that thing around. I have the 60CSx and it's a differnt shape but roughly the same bulkyness as the 76, and that's my tradeoff. Most GPS's come with nothing installed except a basic undetailed continental map unless it's a unit pre-packaged for a specific buyer in mind. kinda like this ctc sale unit. You can mark spots on any gps with no maps installed. it'll be a blank screen with the path you're moving on and you that's how it used to be.
  21. Guess where i`ve been for the last 5 weeks? Like your friend, i come up here every year also. A lot of the fisheries/runs are weak across the state this year but it's a blast. A lot of the king and red fisheries were shut down up the coast to allow for sufficient escapement. I caught silvers using a lot of colors and methods, but this year they really hammered the chartreuse super vibrax I see in the lower portion of your spinner box. It's so hard to break away from what you see everybody else using though (hot pinks and oranges). I just went through girdwood and anchorage in the turnagain arm where i hit some of the streams and rivers. I'll be heading back home in 10 days, it would have been cool to try to arrange a meeting but i don't plan to head back down to Cook inlet, where you'll be. What other spots do you plan to visit down there? kasilof? anchor? Bring tons of rain gear, there's been so much rain this year that there have probably only been about 3 days i didn't come home wet. I had to pick up extra rainwear and boots because nothing dries on its own overnight..the air is just so wet.
  22. for me, the 1 deciding factor for this package is not the included extras but the fact that this unit does not use memory expansion cards. I just checked and Metroguide for just ontario regions is 60-70M, this unit ony has 24M internal memory. If you want topo for offroad info and you`re looking at even larger maps. Anyways, if you don`t mind loading and reloading maps, these units are good, but they will be a bit of a pain for long trips covering a lot of ground. ...for example, a road trip on a motorcycle down to florida..useless without bringing a laptop. That is a nice group of accessories but it`s a big tradeoff.
  23. In my opinion, the rod used for pike fishing depends entirely on the baits you're using. If the rod can easily cast what you're tying on, the rod is good. Pike aren't running fighters, it's all surge and stop so you can bring in any pike with relatively light line and gear, compared to larger salmon, except pinks. I fished pike more than anything else in my younger years, typically using a ~10# Medium power Medium taper rod and usually used 8-10# mono line, and never felt overpowered.
  24. I can't say anything about chemicals leeching into the food out of the bagging but i can say that if you think you'll be a heavy user, you're wasting your time and money with foodsaver. They break very fast and you'll have numerous problems with bag seals breaking, making a proper heat seal in the first place, bags puncturing, unit not sucking hard enough, etc. A lot of my friends hunt and fish as their primary source of meats and most of them have gone through many food saver units since i've known them, and most of of them have done one of 3 things... forked out the money for a professional quality vacuum packagers (around $1000-1500), pay a commercial packaging service, or switched back to traditional methods with some combination of butcher paper and plastic wraps. In a decade of using foodsaver, i have yet to see a package make it as long as 2 years without flaking out in some way. In most cases, you're lucky if they go even 1 year with no signs of air spaces inside. With professional packaging, however, most will make it a year if it's done by a company that knows what they're doing. I quit using foodsaver for most things years ago. If this came up 6 months ago, i could have shown you guys pictures of sockeye, halibut, rockfish, lingcod (proper), and kings from my freezer with a combination of foodsaver, plastic wraps, and professional sealers and you would have seen how only 1 or 2 of the commercial packages had a small pocket of air/ice crystals..the rest were perfectly flat against the fish all around. meanwhile, there were probably only 1 or 2 UNbroken with foodsaver, and even then it was not in solid contact with the meat. Actually, I might be able to get pictures of things here... I'm still on vacation.
  25. it's not the whole gums that you look at, it's the gumline around base of the teeth...and yours looks dark to me. Just like how some coho's will have black mouths, but the gumline around the base of the teeth will be white or light.
