  1. I believe the MNR was going to be monitoring fishing regulations around the dams on the Grand more this year. I heard Caledonia specifically, but I guess it probably also applies to Dunnville, Wilkes, and maybe Paris. Watching out for violations such as fishing below fish ladders and obstructions. I would guess that these signs would have something to do with that. They could make a good bit of money at Caledonia during the fall run.
  2. I could not agree more. I see this happening especially with some of the fly fishing equipment I see. Companies such as Hardy change a premium for their equipment, which while it is great equipment the markup is just plain ridiculous at times. It becomes all about the name and having the latest and greatest bit of kit. Especially when you sit down and start figuring out what it would actually cost to manufacture things such as reels. Rods I can understand a bit more as the blank making process requires specialized equipment and lots of R&D developing tapers, but I still think the markup is crazy with certain manufacturers. In fact, I believe that the hype and marketing gimmicks have actually done the fly fishing market a great disservice. The trend for years has been towards faster and faster graphite rods. Fast rods are fine and can really fire a line a distance when loaded properly, but a slower rod is more forgiving if you don't have a perfect casting stroke as it loads up easier. Rods have gotten to the point where they have become so fast that you need a perfect casting stroke to load the rod properly. That becomes discouraging to the weekend warrior executives buying these high-end rods, so the manufacturers have started to fiddle with line and rod ratings to compensate. Lines are now made either right at the top (or even heavier) than their weight limits, and rods are marked up a line size. This causes the rod to load like a slower rod and become more forgiving for the average caster. What we end up with is rods being marketed as super fast distance rods, but they actually get down-rated to make them cast-able. I can see the high prices on things such as customized centerpin reels as they are handmade in small batches. But for a lot of the mass produced reels I see them as overpriced.
  3. I think Isle of Man TT races are the coolest. It's one of the few world-know races were a fellow with enough ambition and skill can compete and do well without needing a massive bankroll. Guys have built bikes in their garages and taken them racing in a world-class race. You just don't find that in NASCAR, Formula 1, or really any automobile formats anymore.
  4. Not directly in HVAC, but it's sister refrigeration. PM sent.
  5. I take it some of you folks are not TT series fans based on your comments? <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UsFyrvhUNCk"frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Disclaimer - I would never condone driving like this on an open public road
  6. Sounds like that aerator will do the job. Best biological filter is actually getting bacteria to populate the tank, but that takes 1-2 months to establish. You may be able to look at a cut-to-fit ammonia pad that could be installed in your filter.
  7. My thoughts on your idea. Take them for what they're worth. Rather than the aerator I might look at getting a used canister filter from an aquarium. An aerator actually does not add oxygen to the water, what it does is break the surface tension and allow CO2 out and oxygen into the water. The same can be accomplished using a canister with a spraybar, plus you'll have some massive filtration capacity. If you're planning on keeping the minnows alive for for a couple weeks you'll also need to learn about biological filtration, as the ammonia and nitrogen will begin to build up from the fish waste and cause deaths. If you get me the make and model of the freezer or compressor I'll see if I can dig out the starting amps for you. You'll need to keep an eye on the compressor temperature on your first run, a lot of compressors rely on a ~65F return gas to keep the motor cool, I'd imagine that your return gas will be warmer than that depending on what you set your temperature controller at. Strength could be an issue, but I think you're on the right track with the banding. Keep those sides in compression and you'll probably be ok.
  8. Boat Tail ammo for less drag and turbulence, jacketed hollow point for stability, and larger calibers for momentum. I imagine they could tumble in the right conditions, but the rounds are designed for long distances.
  9. It's that time of year around here again. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/hamilton/fish-flies-in-caledonia-1.4241019
  10. Even in close quarters? Big, fat pistol round has lots of stopping power in close quarters and the pistol is a lot faster to get into firing position.
  11. There's mussels. They held up bridge construction for a while.... Imagine what they can accumulate during a lifetime.
  12. Shot regulator causing a big pressure drop will cause your icing. You're doing more refrigerating than cooking. Go charcoal. Weber kettle. Nothing to break on that one.
  13. Blue might be onto something with the regulator. The newer ones do need to be reset occasionally, some silly safety feature that has been added.
  14. Might be to cold to create enough pressure yet. Got to warm up the tank.
  15. Good luck with the 50 cal. Couple feet of water would protect anything from that round. You'd be better off with a pistol round, slower and won't break apart on impact with the water.
  16. Pike fishing is a big deal in those Scandinavian countries. They even get pike out of the brackish waters around the coast, and some real monsters at that. Check out the Fly vs Jerk series on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=furtVdakyF8
  17. It makes me sick that people are so misguided that they can't tell the difference between a person and an animal. Reminds me of that person who was bringing stray dogs from India to Canada for adoption. Thousands of dollars and man hours put into their effort, but totally missed the mark. How many destitute children with empty bellies and no access to medical care did they walk past to get to the dogs? I applaud their passion for a cause, but all that effort and money could go to a much better use. Edit - and that fisherman should have bonked that fish and not let it lie on the pavement like that. If you're keeping the fish just kill it or livewell/stringer it, make it a humane harvest.
  18. I believe you had a goal to break out the fly rod for bass this year? Next time pack a 7wt and some deerhair poppers for your topwater action and hold on.
  19. The line between brave and stupid is pretty thin sometimes. We were in a nice heavy fiberglass Larson with lots of power, anything lighter than that and I would not have gone past the pier.
  20. Went out of Maitland on Saturday morning. Got banged around quite a bit at first, wasn't sure if we were going to be able to stick it out or not. Calmed down as the day went on, but we had to head in about lunch.
  21. Hatchery rat.
  22. Yeah, unfortunately it's what's under all that pretty stuff that really matters. Sorry about your RAM.
  23. OI, there's a lot full of them on the corner of Hwy 3 and Cockshutt, I think that's where the dealer may have set up.
  24. Dude, come down here when the mayflies are hatching in Caledonia and York. They'll shut down bridges because they become slipperier than ice, and your wipers only do so much against bug guts. The smell is the worst part of it.
