Are white perch the same thing as white bass? They look quite similar to the ones I catch on Lake Ontario

Has anyone used the new HT ice fishing reels with the spool that points towards to first guide? They seem really nice.

The locks right in downtown Lindsay can be decent if you're willing to rub shoulders with guys. I remember when I was 12 or so, I went down having never caught much in the way of walleye before and hooked two right off the bat.

Decided to give hard water whitefishing a try for the first time. After a fresh dumping of snow, and day-old tracks filled in with drifting snow, the long walk out was excruciating. We fished anywhere between 58-67 feet of water for at least 3 hours, marking the occasional fish but not even getting a touch. We decided to head in, but decided to try some perch fishing for the last 45 minutes or so before heading. We set up in 36 ft water and landed 2 right off the bat. It was slow, but in 45 minutes we had 7 keepers, plus a handful more smaller ones. The whitefish was disappointing, but at least the perch cooperated to salvage the day (somewhat). I think I'll stick to perch on Simcoe unless I can arrange a ride out to deeper water. I snapped a photo of the huts on the way back in: Here's the perch before the butcher has his way with them:

Aside from the Ambassaduer's for down rigging, I've been thoroughly dissatisfied with Abu Garcia products.

I'm surprised at how the majority of reports are close to, or exclusively lake trout. Are the whities in shallower, or just not biting as readily?

Causeway Bait (on the 7a directly on the way) is open until 7 I believe. And yes, it's about a 20-30 minute walk, depending on the snow.

Finding safe ice is not an issue to say the least. I was out there last weekend, and there was a solid 17-18 inches of ice. I'd suggest Caeserea for a launch point, and head left to the large group of huts. They'll be on the deep hump.

Assuming they still work well in frigid temperatures for ice fishing, that'd be great to have

I use a small humminbird, and it does the trick just fine, but one day I had it out for a few hours in -20 + conditions, the transducer wasn't getting picked up. Turns out it was just in need of a thaw. Other than that, no issues.

HAH! High school is a sad place to be nowadays.
