  1. Plenty of ice, was out yesterday in about 14 ft of water. Stick with an operator I'm not saying ice is safe everywhere.

While not the 50 jumbo epic outing of last week, it was still an epic 30 jumbo outing!

Morning bite was hot, it completely dropped off after 2pm. Fish weren't as aggressive as last week, I found having a small jig down there worked well to attract the bigger ones and then execute the deal with the gold spoon.

I also missed a nice pike! It attacked my spoon hard, but I had no clue it was even around so it JUST missed... boy was it fast! At least cool to see, then it was gone for good.

Best of luck, I'd recommend a tip-up if you guys want a pike seen them both outings...

  2. Hi everyone it's been a while since I've posted to the board, I haven't been fishing as much as I deserve to.

Got out to Virginia Beach yesterday for the first ice trip of the season, boy did I have an itch and did it ever get scratched!

Setup in 8 feet of water, ice thickness was about 6". First 30 minutes just some dinks I was like aww man not again, I want to move huts when I can. Then things changed.

First up was a big pike (for Simcoe) that came in but couldn't get to commit. Then non-stop jumbo action all day long!

The fishing kept getting better and better as the day went on, with average fish size increasing throughout the day. It got to the point where I was letting jumbos go by because they weren't jumbo enough. Kept my limit of 50, I now have delicious food for the winter.

Swedish pimples, my go to lure for winter ice fishing, really paid off. It was all I needed. Their weight let me get it in front of the jumbos before the dinks got a chance, and the fish were really excited by the flash.

The bag I took home at the end of the day musta weight like 40 pounds, I was joking I needed a snowmobile to transport it to the car. Then came the filleting. I wasn't looking forward to it as I'm a filleting noob but was committed to do every last fish. About 4 hours later they were all done, and I'm much better at filleting now.

A very rewarding experience, and I must say it may be my best and funnest fish outing ever! Seems like Simcoe's jumbo population may have grown, I didn't have too much success last year but it coulda been the luck of the draw.

A snow squall hit which was intense. All of a sudden the sky goes dark. I open the hut door 30 minutes later and there's snow everywhere! Was very cool.

Anyways enjoy the pictures and happy fishing to all:

  3. Assuming you're targeting perch / pike, I would recommend either Dave's Fish Huts or IceFishingOutfitters out of Virginia Beach, Lake Simcoe. I've fished a fair amount at each and they're both equally as good, I can't recommend one over the other I like them both. pm me if you're interested in more details about them, and good luck!

  4. I don`t understand getting upset about talking about it, I appreciate hearing a viewpoint from people in another country. Some seem to get upset if any one expresses a viewpoint other than what they believe.

Just my opinion, the only thing that may be wrong with Canada`s health care system is there are far less people, greater distances in between concentrations of people, and the USA on your southern border. Your doctors come here because they can make more money here, why? simple things, drug companies reward doctors for prescribing their products, and our government didn`t even require competitive bidding on the cost of drugs they buy under our medicare system. Plus our doctor`s union, the AMA is in bed with the politicians here, they even have members in congress.

Your views? I can discuss them with out getting twisted, some here can`t.

    Well said.

  5. There was a report last year of someone that caught a big ling on Simcoe and I thought that was impressive. His ling was pushing the Simcoe record. Judging from the size of the two in your pic, I'd say you're pretty close to breaking or have already broke the record with those monster ling, you should check it out!

This is my favorite icefishing report this year. Rare fish few people catch, in such numbers and with great size is truly impressive, that possibility is what keeps me hooked on fishing just a little extra. Thanks for sharing!

  6. I've definitely noticed a morning bite fishing for bass in the summer. For each hour after sunrise, there is a 50% drop in numbers till noon hits at which time it goes dead. This is in under 15 feet of water, I think the fish go deeper which is another factor.

Tell me this, if there ain't no such thing as a morning bite, why are y'all getting up at 4am to go fishing??

  7. Man you went out to nippissing to fish perch? every post you make is perch.....Why wouldnt you target what Nippissing is famous for, and catch perch where you always catch them without paying somebody to drill your holes..

For real all you caught was perch>?lol

With a name like Coolio I thought you'd be a bit cooler. Thanks for the report DMASSE, if I want to go up to Nipissing for icefishing I know where to go now.

  8. Hi everyone, looking forward to this Saturday, which will be my first time targeting lake trout and whitefish. I realize it is better to be able to move around to target them, but I don't have that kind of gear and will be bringing two other first timers for these species as well.

I have a good idea of the techniques and presentations to offer these fine specimens thanks to the board, but the question remains, which operator would you recommend.

The factors I define for being the 'best' include:

    1. Performance (Who is well known for putting you on fish)?

    2. Friendliness of Operators

    3. Comfort / Condition of accomodations (heated transportation, clean and comfortable huts)

There are several hut operators I have in mind (Bonnie Boats, Tim Hales, Floyd Hales, Hank Heyink, etc...) but I've found limited reviews about them on message boards.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. You could be helping an angler catch their first whitie / laker. I promise to post fish porn if we're succesful!

  9. Not sure about access points, but I can tell you that people have begun ice-fishing on Cook's Bay, there were about 20 ppl today. However there is still open water further out of the bay, I'd recommend a floater suit just in case. Yep most people target perch there, but pike can be caught as well. Good luck!
