  2. At one time I'd take a light weight fly outfit to the Grand and catch Mooneyes, June was the month I recall. It was actually a popular event with local fly guys and I recall a few of them got smoked, very similar fish.

  3. Haven't been active on the site much this summer - haven't really fished - one or two trips where I mainly fished off the dock lol However I did come up with a plan to improve those odds Recently purchased my first fishing kayak - A Feel Free Lure 11.5 - I have only had it out twice, once for a paddle and once for a fish) In this pic I am running with the seat high (new user error -couldn't lower it lol) - but did get out again last weekend and figured it out - was awesome One interesting thing - fishing excursion up Haliburton way - the lake was covered in these small flying ants - I have never seen so many fish rises in my life - almost every minute something was coming to the surface to gorge on the bugs - very much like a mayfly hatch Quick trip up to the family cottage near Gravenhurst. Fishing off the dock I managed to hook into a large walleye - over 24 inches. According to some long time lake residents its rare for a walleye to be that size on the lake - so score one for me. Also caught it on a brand new Storm 360 search bait - like literally out of the package and 3 casts - score again The next morning I was mainly being the kids fishing assistant - one of them yelled that a big "scary fish" just swam under the dock. I quickly grabbed my rod that had a wacky rigged worm on it and jigged it on the deep side of the dock and hooked into a nice pike Anyway - all in all a great couple of catches to tide me over and if there is something memorable about my maiden kayak fish this weekend will update as well On another note -my group has confirmed our plan and outfitter for 2020 - we are going with Slate Falls Outposts to their Miniss West cabin at the end of August - first planning session in the books last night and the juices are flowing Cheers and thanks for reading Gordy

  4. Smoked Chub are not actually Chub that you would catch in SW Ontario rivers and creeks. They're a deep water Cisco species called Bloater ? I wouldnt recommend filling your smoker with common Creek Chub! Lol Josh

  5. Now why would I take veggies like these and try and make them taste like a sausage? This is my first attempt at hydroponics and it has been fun watching my stuff grow. No weeding, cultivating and the growth rate is amazing. Want a salad, to go with that steak? Go out and pick enough romaine or lettuce leaves that you need for a meal. Next week there will be more growing in. Starting on our second round of strawberries; all the blossoms are back. Dan.

  6. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coregonus_hoyi Lots of chubs in our streams and rivers too, but J has it right a different species than them, and a much different look. Many years ago I went to buy some minnows at a bait store in PAB, in the mix of big minnows and chubs was was a mooneye, never had seen one before and I passed on it even though it looked good for bait, just didn't know if it was legal for bait, and I didn't have much confidence if they did either.

  7. Well we get alot of chubs while river fishing for migrating and resident trout here in Southern Ontario. I am unsure of the commercial fishery for it on our side in Canada. But you can find as many as you want to fill a smoker within creeks and rivers here.

  8. If it is any help, https://www.interlochenpublicradio.org/post/chub-fishery-disappearing This is from the American side of the Great Lakes, but I assume the effect covers both sides? " The number of chubs has decreased more than 99 percent in the past 20 years. " That will make them harder to find? https://eatwisconsinfish.org/fish-list/chubs/

  10. Obviously there are pluses and minuses everwhere, but we love it here in Wasaga. Best of both worlds, IMO. We moved here upon retirement. I can get to Muskoka to fish as a day trip summer and winter. We can get on the 400 quite easily well above most of the traffic. River fishing spring and fall, down rigging in summer if you are into that. The whole area from Midland to C'wood offers similar advantages.

  11. I have cut my salt way down. I will do 2 cups of brown sugar and a 1/4 cup of salt when I do the dry mix. If I do the brine,I will use 1/2 a cup of salt. I have not had any complaints. I also just let the water flush in the cure bowl while I am washing off the cure. Helps a ton. I did start letting it dry in the fridge for 12 hours max, but have found letting it sit out and air dry for 6 is plenty. To each their own I say. This is what works for me now.

  13. The only thing that disturbs me about Plant based foods is that I did not invest in companies making this crap as their stocks are going through the roof! I could then afford to buy more Prime Rib roasts! HH
