  2. What happened? I got a pretty good idea what happened There's been lots of great Ontario outdoors people here, great anglers and great characters, people who have done lots of crazy trips with crazy experiences because of their obsession with fishing, they fish 24/7, who have found this site and then have been pushed away by the old boys club group of guys that treat this forum like their own personal blog and shun anyone who isn't in the original club. that's my take on it, if you scroll through the list of members you'll probably wonder- what ever happened to that guy, and that guy? where did they all go? Ric's alive and well, I see him on FB, I've got lots of friends on FB and I don't really know who they are because they left here and didn't keep their handle and sent me a friend request because of our interaction here I'm not calling you out Dax, quite the opposite, I liked how you guys butted heads, it was entertaining, it was the bullying, pile on, you're not one of us boys club mentality that killed a bunch of good posters here it is what it is, a personal blog for a small circle of friends, outsiders not welcome

  4. "Next big thing"? 😆 Kayak fishing has been going strong for more than 10 years. Every imaginable species in pretty much every imaginable water has been caught from a yak. The only time I don't fish from a yak is when I fish from a SUP. Yes, you can lay out $2K for a yak, but you can also find a fishable boat for less than 1/2 that. Any stable SOT can be a good fishing yak. Specialized fishing yaks have evolved in design so that you can easily stand and fish easily. Closed boat ramps, meh. Expensive gas, meh. Lakes with no boat ramps, meh. Water too shallow for a motor.......

  5. In the 18 years I've been on this board there's been so many folks leave I couldn't even imagine how many. Some make a big issue about leaving while others just simply disappear into the night never to be heard from again. Some come back & some don't.

  9. Like living to a ripe old age? Sumptin' like that Beans? That's what I'm looking forward to Cliff, and if it means not taking the boat out well that's what I am going to do, look forward to living longer and doing my absolute best to ensure I am not the one that passes on this thing to people I love and care about, simple as that I am going to tell you all what I say to everyone I know that goes for a ride to get out of the house because they all say they aren't in contact with another soul and not harming anyone. The idea is that if for any reason 1st responders need to be called out resources are squandered. Vehicles should be on the roads for 2 reasons. 1, to get to and from work if you are considered to be essential. 2, to get to and from grocery stores, pharmacies and getting fuel to get to and back from an essential job. I think that is pretty simple. I won't delve into the discussion as to whom and what should or shouldn't be essential. I will say this though, our 1st responders are the most essential people we have right now. Please just stay home. It's tough, it's boring, it's terrible but it's better than being dead. I don't know how hard that is to understand. In my humble opinion and that of the leaders we elected to make the tough decisions for us just stay home. Nice fish but please just stay home.

  11. 33,000 + new cases in the USA on the 10th and 2000 + deaths. USA is now leading the world in the number of cases, we have China and India beat by multiple times, countries that have our population beat by multiple times. Open it when the daily death toll keeps rising? 2000+ deaths, that is almost the number of people in my entire township. I can understand the financial aspects, but should people have to pay with their lives?

  12. Interesting---but if the curve goes down to zero it will bounce right back again once controls are slackened off. We need to keep a low infection rate going until a big percentage of the pop has developed immunity by being exposed. This thing needs to be cooked---we can doit on high and have the pot boil over and make a big mess----hospitals overloaded, people dying like flies----or we can cook it slowly on a steady low heat.

  14. GBW don't listen to these guys kayak fishing is the teats! (No disrespect guys 🙏) I'm not saying it's for everyone, but those who like it, love it. I'd also say it's not the next big thing, it's already here. There's a pretty big community of kayak anglers now, I always have someone to fish with if I'm not choosing to go solo. I have been kayak fishing for three years or so now. After the first year I sold my boat. I'm on my third 'yak, but the one I have now is finally "the one". You can go cheap or go high end, either will put you on fish and it really depends on your budget and where and how you're going to use it. It's always good to try before you buy if you can. Lots of shops have paddle days where you can show up and try a couple different demos but obviously none of that is going on right now due to covid. Check out Kawartha Kayak Fishing Club on Facebook. We have regular club meets. I can probably wrangle a spare kayak from a buddy for you to try out once we get the all clear on this virus.

  15. As someone that has fished from every type of watercraft available and an owner of a variety of small watercraft I just don't get the kayak fad. There's better and often cheaper options for most situations. I get the draw of angling from a small craft but find kayaks impractical. Josh

  16. good post, important topic the older I get, the more cautious I get and the more I think about this stuff because of all the stuff and close calls that have happened while in a remote setting I think the most important thing is a way to communicate to get help if you need it here's our ride out from a remote canoe trip that went wrong because we had a Spot Sat Messenger I know a guy who had no communication on a fly in trip, his father in law died of a heart attack on the 2nd day and the weather was 30 C plus everyday for the rest of the week I buried a big siwash into the back of my brother's head a few years ago on a fly in, thank God it wasn't his eye crap happens, a way to communicate and get help is important

  17. As per the subject, anyone here thinking this may be your next venture in fishing, from a kayak? These units I have seen can be close to $2000 for the ones you use foot power for but I am thinking I may just dive into this way of fishing. I haven't ever fished from one to know if I'd like it but I have fished from many a boat and or canoe trip. And they have easy water access. Thoughts form others thinking about going this route too? Yeah I STILL want a boat but this is an idea that I can take small solo trips locally in time. *edit to add - I am moving in May and I will be close to a river is why I am thinking this

  19. Not sure if this is the one you mean but it's a good watch. I follow Jay but somehow haven't seen that one. He's using a NuCanoe kayak there looks like a Frontier or a Pursuit. I was going to put that Pronav system on my ATAK before I switched to my Hobie.

  30. Haha! I think a long while ago I explained this stuff...... have some time and with economic uncertainty we may have members needing a more frugal diet. Here's my experience. Nothing wrong with them at all. I put myself thru university working at the unionized Schneiders meat plant in Kitchener. Anyone eating balogna but going EWWW when someone eats a 'raw' hotdog is hypocritical since both are the exact same thing. The huge blender either pipes the gooey mix into the hotdog forming/packaging machine or when needed shifts to pipe the same mix into the blue ribbon balogna forming and packaging machine. From there it all goes into steam cooking rooms via metal carriage carts on overhead rails So what weird stuff is in these things? Lips and 'a' holes? no folks so relax while I explain. Try not to barf as some here may be squeemish. The types that catch and release as 'heroes' but are really too squeemish to actually kill and clean a critter. Ewwww! 😉 Ever wonder what happens to dairy cows? Put out to pasture? How about sows that make piggies? How about bulls? What about roosters and egg laying hens? All put out to pasture to retire in a grassy kind of retirement home? Sorry. They don't. They go into sausage, all the assorted cold cuts like salami, mock chicken, spam, pepperettes, balogna, hot dogs and all else where ground up meat is formed to make stuff to eat. Hamburger isn't just ground up steak from steers either. The huge blenders feeding the balogna/hotdog machines also mix the remnants of many meat products where for example the collected rounded ends of the 6ft long cooked meat mixture 'noodles', guess you'd call em, are trimmed off so the package you buy doesn't have the rounded end but just the flat perfectly rounded sliced part between the ends. Also added to the blenders are cereal grains, chemicals to gel/preserve color the product and also added is other 'rework' which is the accumulated meats not pretty enough to sell such as net-torn cooked roasts, hams and such where at certain weights they are added to the recipe in the blenders. We used to get livestock from local farmers but before shutting down (bigger corps bought it out to close it to stop competition) it switched to stuff like big frozen packaged boneless beef bundles (about 3ft long, 2ft wide and 6inches deep)from Brazil methinks. No offence to Terry for his humorous quip, just had some time to again (did this a while ago) explain what I saw where I worked for about 5 years. Worked all over the plant. Even ran the bacon/sausage smokehouse, the knockout room where the now cooked and solid cold-cut holding metal tubes came in and I air blasted the noodles out for slicing/packaging elsewhere. Worked in the barn where all critters came through except poultry which were done at the Ayr plant, worked kill rooms for both beef and pork, even shipping where we ate like kings. Toughest job was tearing 'leaf lard' where hogs came past hung upside down quickly. Hung and split down the middle after being boiled/hair removed/cleaned and you had to reach inside to grab the membrane covering the ribs on each side at the same time and tear up removing it. Like doing a weight curl using your fingers to grasp a sheet holding a 35lb dumbbell rather than grabbing the dumbbell pipe. I eat the stuff and knew many folks and even a few inspectors. Place was clean top to bottom and was a well run joint. So next time try some balogna or hotdog. Same thing. Both cooked and ready to eat. NO difference. Only thing I worry about is 'mock chicken' which is a mystery and sounds kinda scary to me. 😏

  31. That looks slick but I wouldn’t risk the cost and time to install. Like others have mentioned, ramp slope, waves/wind etc could make it difficult and possibly put strains on it and the boat. The video shows some flexing in components. Not sure if it would accept too many sloppy or rammy couplings. Having side guide boards or roller posts on the trailer would surely help I’d think.

  34. I did it, it wasn’t for me. I have a 14 footer on a trailer with a set of beach wheels for early season and tough to launch locations. Boat is light enough that I can take the outboard off and drag it down an embankment if I need to fish.

  40. The short answer is as long as you have too. Going over by 3 or 4 thousand every once and a while won't hurt anything. Check the oil level, making sure it's full and you'll be fine. Worst case, if the oil starts to look really dirty; head to a lube shop and get the oil changed. Just tell them you only want an oil & filter change and to screw off with all the up selling. Dan.

  44. Now is not the time to become complacent! Many people are nearing the end of their 14 day quarantine and most are getting antsy about getting out and doing normal things, DON'T! Cases of covid 19 are on the rise which means if you have been lucky enough to avoid it thus far the odds of getting it are actually increasing. Now more than ever you should be even more cautious. You might not think it matters, perhaps you are young and strong, even if you get it no big deal you might not even show symptoms but what about those you have contact with? This virus is killing people, tens of thousands of people, nine more just died yesterday in a nursing home in Bobcaygeon. The reason so many people are being infected is because too many people haven't taken it seriously enough, they are being selfish, they are thinking of what they WANT instead of what they NEED. My 14 day quarantine is up as of tomorrow and my initial thought was "great, I can go shopping"! Then I realized "I don't NEED to go shopping, I still have plenty of food, I still have two weeks of medications left, (I'll call the drug store today and see if they can deliver). Sure it would be nice to get some fresh veggies or fruit but I don't NEED them right now, I've made soups or stews with any perishable vegetables I had and frozen them so I'm good for a while. So before you head out the door at the end of your 14 days think about the risk not only to you but to your loved ones, DO I NEED IT or DO I WANT IT!
